IMT IJ.AYIN THE YANKEE. Not many months since. a genera! mus1er of militia and regulars was called by the Governor in Lower Canada, near the town of Halifax. His excellency called together the ofiicers who commanded the -'regulars ;"' told them to prepare for a fine day's sport; thai he had ordered a lnp of miliiia, (fifty turn) compos' ! of Irishmen, to play the "V.vMvV.r.'' at a vr,. fight in the afternoon; and (hat -UU Majeslie's regulars'' would have fine sport transferrin" 'llm IrMi Yaidc-T?,' in I he character of prisoners of war, from the field of battle into a neighboring h g house, which was converted for the
lime being into a gu aid house.
T
Pats, commanded hv a truly original
character by tin; name cf John Morris, issued forth at the. appointed time, and formed (hem-clvr? into two line deep
on an elevated spot near the town;
their valiant leader, at the same time.
exhorted them to stand firm and mind
his orders, and play the game a? 4real Yankees should," and even to give the Lobsters"' a taste of cold steel rather than submit to become pi isoners. The rcgulars'eonsis.ing of about two hun
dred men, firmed some GOO feet from the sham Yankees, and commenced a regular peppering of musketry, which was returned with promptitude by the Pats. At this stae of the action, the "regulars"' were observed to extend their line in order to surround the enemy; but our hero Morris ordered to "charge bayonet?,"' without any particular injunction not to hint the foe. His majesty; regulars thought (he most prudent course was to give ''leg bail"' for their valor, by performing a retrogade movement at a brisk tiot. But Morris was not to be cheated in this manner: he pursued the retreating red coals and could not resist the temptation of repeatedly vociferating Hurrah for Jackson," until lie succeeded in taking fifty prisoners, among whom was Hi 3 Excellence, who ransomed himself
and his fellow piisoners, by paying for a dinner, of which 200 Pats partook in honor of the victory. It is but fair to say that they conducted their prisoners into town, playing alternately, "Yankee Doodle," and that soul-stirring air, "Garry Owen." Detroit Free Press.
AN lNUIJE.Vr A'i' AATdHEZ. I was led to reflect that the daring and fool hardy spirit of Mike Fink had
not become extinct among the boatmen, when our steamer came to, for a few hours, at Natchez, on her way down the Mississippi. This city, which on the heights displays a beautiful appearance, is nevertheless more noted on the river here for the character of the lower town, or 'Natchez under the hill,' which the boatmen make a kind of rendezvous, and is the frequent theatre of a royal row. At the time of our slop there, over fifty boats of different descriptions were lying off in the river opposite this place. Close to the wharf, upon the deck of a broadhorn, stood a fellow of powerful muscular appearance; and every now and then he would swing around his arms and throw out a challenge lo any one "vho dared to come and lake the. rud off' of styling him self the "roarer,'' and declaring that he
had'nt had a light in a month, and was
yetting lazy.
The men standing around seemed
neither disposed to take much notice of
this fellow nor to accept his challenge
and from this I imagined that he was a
regular bruiser, and no one cared, to opp?)se him. For some time he continu
ed throwing out his challenge and in
terlarding his speeches with the usual boast of a western bruiser that is, that
ho was half horse, half alligator, half steamboat, and half snapping-tui tie, with a little dash of lightning," &c Sec. Presently a little stubbed fellow came along, and hearing the challenger dare anyone to rub the nnt off of him, stopped up, and in a dry kind of style looked up in his face, and inquired, "Who might you be, my big chicken eh?"'
"I'm a high pressure steamer," roar
ed the big bully. "And Pm a snag'' replied the litlh
one, as he pitched into him ; and, before
he had time reflect, he was sprawl
ing upon the deck.
A general shout of applause bur'st
from the spectators; and many now,
who before had stood aloof from tin.
braggadocio, jumped on board the boat,
and enjoyed the manner m which the
little fellow pommeled him. This scrape appeared to be the gig
nal for several other fights ; and in the demolition of several edifices and the
unhousing of several scores of their in
mate; however, during the night our boat left the town, and 1 learned noth
ing farther connected with this scrape.

Wc learn by the New Orleans price
current of April 16, that corn shelled and in sacks in that market, is worth no more than 62 1-2 cents per bushel and thatin the ear no more than 37 t-2 cents per barrel. For one or two seasons past this article has borne a high price in that market at least twice as
much ns what t is now quoted at, and in many instances three times the amount. This has enabled those who have been in the trade to make money and induce many others to embark
in it, and furnish a supcraoundant supply, which has knocked down the prices that all will suffer loss, and some will no doubt be bankrupt for the lime being Tine, a pressure in the currency,
may have operated in a degree, 'out even under this pressure, let have been ever so severe, we see pork and beef maintaining a high price in (he same maiket. This shows plainly that it is the supply and demand that regulate
the price not the. scarcity or abundance of money. Now it is evident that were two thirds of the corn in that market to be sunk in flic Mississippi or otherwise removed, Ihe remaining third would
bring as much money as the whole of
it will at the present price. What can-more plainly demonstrate
the necessity of a division of a labor
our farmers I Nor is there any lack of
profitable objects demonstrate that in
the production of various commodities,
there is ricn reward.
The sale of thirtv-one head of the
improved stock of cattle, consisting of cows, calves, heifers, steers, oxen, occ. brought within a fraction of live thousand dollars! Hemp has been worth S10 per hundred and many other articles, bear an equal value. It has also been demonstrated that the cultivation of silk even in the castem stales, where neither the soil nor climate is as well adopted to its culture as that of Indiana, yields a great
er proht than any other product.
Our extensive prairies so well adapted to corn and small grain, has not the quality of producing grass, cither in variety or abundance, while one are better adapted to grazing than our heavy timbered bottom and up lands. The labor expended in ploughing, planting and gathering largo crops of corn would soon erect sheds and prepare a sufficient quantity of Grass lands, lo nlford pastures and hay, say for 25 head of cattle. From these,
after a few y ears, one thousand dollars
woiln might be disposed oi annually,
without the labor of building a boat,
ind the expense and loss of time, and
rUk cf descending the Mississippi.
But the fide of these cattle is not
the only profit to be derived the butter and cheese produced from the dai
ry, together with the prolils of even the whey fed to some thrifty hogs, kept
in a neat clover field, at hand, would
form a handsome income.
