(y- It w ill be seen by a notice in the Times of to-lav, tliat T.ooks for subscription to the stock of the Aurora and Napoleon Turnpike roinpan v, nre to be opened on the 2.lh instant. The company to construct thi Turnpike was bartered at t tin I i-t i sion of the Lejihiture ; and is similar to the one granted to the IlUiii:,Suu nnd Napoleon company. C'ON(;ur:ss. Wo hate been unable to find any thin in the proceedings of Coinrrc", for thelat month or two, of fiilTicient interest to lay before onr reader. We cavi-a paragraph week before last from the C'iiu-itmali Gazette, and ne cive one this week from a Baltimore paper, which w ill give the reader a pretty good idea of. hcvv tnenders of Congress nre passing off their lime. I'olh bouses have agreed to meet hereafter on the fust Monday in November, and adjourn the long cs ion on the first of flay. We have not seen in the proceedings lately nny thing concerning nn adjournment. We learn, however, from a citizen of this place, just returned from W;hingto'", that an adjournment probably w ill take pie about the 4th of July.

INDIAN AYAH. The Indians in Florida, Alabama, nnd (Jcnrgi.v, arc carrying on a tnot destructive warfire against the whiles. In Georgia, towns nnd villages have been entirely deserted, and the Indians arc laying the country w.vtrnsthcy pnss nlong. In Alabama, it is the same way; nnd in Florida, the same. We have read a letter from the Tost Master at Columhu, Georgia, to the Tost Master General, dated on the v2!d of May, which represents a portion of tlio country as full of "marks of indiseiiniinate ruin nnd destruction houses pillaged and burnt stages destroyed horjes killed and numerous human beings in a slate of the most loath.Hime pulrilariion.'' We presume that ere this time rigorous measures have been taken to put a stop tovthcsc depredations, by the proper authorities. We see it staled in some of the papers, (though w e have not seen it among the congressional proceedings,) that a law has been pas.-ed, authorizing the I're.-idcnt to accept the service of volunteers to suppress hostilities. The Governor of Tennessee has been called on for '2 )00 volunteers; and the Militia of Alabama and Georgia have been called out. A gentleman who fame from the lower country, on Thursday morning last, informs us that some of the Alabaminns arc leaving that Slate and coming up the liver or, in oilier words, they are "iuvjoriously flying" for fear of being drafted. A bill to provide for the purchase of the slock in the Louisville and Portland Canal,
passed the Senate of the United Slates on the
3d instant, nnd was peiuling in llic House, oi
Representatives at our latest dates. The object of Ihis Dill is to make the canal the property of the United Slates, and then all Uoats will be permitted to pass free of lolk The following is a copy of the bill as it passed the Senate : ; if enacted by ikr. Senate and Home of Rrprcslenlnthcs of the United Slates of America in Congress assembled, That for the purpose of improving the navigation of the Ohio river at the Falls, and rendering llie same, a? near as may be, free from all loll, the Secretary of the Treanry hr, and he is hereby authorized, to purchase from the holders thereof the private stock in the 1 ,ouisvillc and Portland Canal Company, including all the interest which individual stockholders or the company may have in said ("anal. Provided, That so much of said slm k can he procured at market price, not exceeding sixteen per cent, above the par value, within the present year, ns will give the United Stales the conttol of the said Canal. Sr.c. 2. .'In' I be it fnrlhct enacted, That a sum sutlicicnt to carry into effect the provisions of this act be, and the same is hereby appropriated, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated.' 0jj-Not long since we promised to give nur readers some extracts from a handbill printed hr Jtillan fire", last July, jjsta day or two
,efor the flection. Kvery body who knows
any thing about Milton Gregg, know very
Hell that ho inot a man of much account;
jet he is and has been in Ihe habit of palming
him i ll oir ns something great. And there are ton, some great small turn in Dearborn eonnty, who would at nny lime, fall down
nnd worship him, if he would but say the
word. These great I'lllc turn, however, are
small in number, for the majority Anwhim
but they know him only to be certain that he is ;i man de.slitutcof all kind of consistcney or principle And here we assert that he has prom
ised to do that which he never done, nnd he has not yet accounted to his constituents f,r the
t reach of the pledges ne mane in nis nanooui
l,elall who feel disposed, read the following
vtracl from that handbill
"But. to lay jesting aside, and dea
corinu.lv with you, fellow-citizens, on
this subject, permit mc to say, that if
I hvr. a r Hit conception oi mat on
ing the sagacious editor of the Times, and should I be honored uilk a seat in the Legislature, I should feel bound to oppose that bill should it come before that body, or any other bill founded upon the same principles. I do not consider it consistent with the honor and interest of the State, thus to involve herself in an enormous debt for the construction of all her contemplated Hail Roads and Canals, indiscriminately throughout the State, many of which are uncalled for at this time, and perhaps, would not, when completed, yield an income of four per cent, on the capital invested. If the state cannot lend a helping hand to the construction of those w orks of public Utility which are already begun, and which are called for by the present wants of the community, without committing herself, to the same extent, in favor of all others that may hereafter he begun, whether they may be of public utility or not, it were heller for her that she should withhold her hand altogether, and throw them all hack upon their own resources for final completion. It is not however, probable that the mammoth bill will be. again brought forward the ensuing winter; the last Legislature having, as I believe, very justly given it its quietus." Now, then, you sec hcrc what Cregg promised to do, and you know he Din vote in the last Legislature for a bill precisely "founded
on the same principles" ns the one he was "as
much opposed to as any man could be." This
is the way he makes pledges to get votes, and thi is the way hedeceived the people. Yet, with some folks Milton Gregg is the very ju'nfc of purity, and consistency.
