granted; that no license, that expires after the first day of October next, shall be renewed; and that no license that exr'ires before the first day of October next, shall be renewed for a longer time than six months. Let the Council adhere inflexibly to such an ordinance, and the evil is remedied. The keepers of coffee houses will see that they must seek other employments they will find them. But partial injury will result to them. The pood to society will be very great. Cm. Gaz. Forf.ioners in New Your. IncrediVle as it may appear, we. have now in this lift more foreigners than are to be found in the whole of the Southern States. In the summer of 1830, there were in the State of New York fortytight thousand and some odd hundreds more aliens than were contained in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Gcorcia, Alabama, Mississippi. Louisiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and the Territory of Florida. Jour, of Commerce. Blacks. In 1330, the whole numher of blacks, bond and free, in the U. Stales, wa 2,3-23,6-12. Out of this number two thousand and forty-five Here returned as of one hundred years and upwards. At the same period the entire white population was 10,53?,378; out of which only live hundred and thirty-nine had attained a century and upwards. Making every allowance for the want of proper registering, these results show an ast onishing difference in the comparative longevity of whites and blacks. The number of leaf and dumb negroes is proportionally smalt to that of the whites, while the number of blind is much greater in. comparison. Jour, of Commerce.
The Corn Planter. A machine of this name, for which a patent has been obtained by Henry Blair, a free man of color, of an adjoining county of Maryland, is now exhibiting in the Capitol. It is a very simple and ingenious machine, which, as moved by a horse, opens the fuiruw, drops (at proper intervals, and in an exact and suitable quantity) the corn, covers it, and levels the earth so as, in fact, to plant the corn as tapidly as a horse can draw a fdough over the ground. The inventor thinks it will save the labor of eight men. Wc understand he is about to jtudiJify the machine, so as to adapt it to the planting of cotton. If it will .nccomplisi) (as we incline to believe it will) all wiiich l:e supposes, it will prove to be an invention of great utility. ,Vf. IlXt. I It RRic an n! OiTth e evening of the 0th ult. a most iolenl hurricane crossed the north part of Ripley coum'T, Ind. it took the roof olY the dwellirg h-puse, kitchen, and stable, of Mr. Charles Watson, who keeps a public house at the Laughery bridge, on the road from this place to Lawrenceburgh. The entire upper story of the stable was blown down. Some of the materials was carlied a distance of two hundred and fif1'ty yards. The standing timber was thrown down almost entire. Another. On the same day a storm, if possible more violent and destruc tive in its c licet s, passed across the north part of Decatur county, level ing every thing in its course, throwing down timtrer, fences, unroofing barns and houses, demolishing chimneys, and in some instances the walls of brick houses have been materially injured. Some of the materials composing the roofs of some huildings, were found between a half a mile and a mile distant. Logs of 2 to 3 feet in diameter were lifted from beds and carried from 30 to 10 yards. A waggon body was lifted off the waggon and part of it found a mile distant. No lives were lost. An immense amount of damage has been done to the farms which it passed. Grrcmthurzh Rrposilnr. Changk of Name. A Miss Sheepshanks has applied to the Legislature of Pennsjlvania for a change of name. The Philadelphia Ledger says, with some show of reason, "Nonsense! ny does not the lady get married, and thus change her name, without expense to the state." Ax HEmrovNn. A great blow cp. The citizens of
