SATURDAY .HOllMX. JAtV. 10, IS3G. LETTERS FROM WASHINGTON No. 3. Corrctprntftnte rfti'ie Rising Svn Times ' C v?r.r's, No., Dec. 21, ir.3f. Dar Siryy 1 a't letter was t'lhd with tin' results of t! e 'edit :i of ti.r Soiialv Committee". In the llouse, von will ce by the papers that on Wednesday, Mr. Fail field, of Maine, introiliief.il n menioria I from sundry females of thnt State, prnyms Conirress to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia. Th House refilled to print or to refer the tncmoiial of these j-hilnnlhropic, kind-hearted Yankee, ir's; and it ii to he hoped that by next w inter they ill be better employed than in meddling with this excitine suhject, on which the South feel so very sensitive. All is speculation nnd calculation hereabont our French affairs. Beins no politician, my opinions me worth hut little ; but I fc 1 confident that some folks arc determined that this t!i in cultv shall not he fettled de.riivi Jackson's ad

lion have the
control of nil the h adinj Committees of the Senate, they can u ninth to embarrass the administration. Cn. Jac kson has succeeded in fettling our di.'iciiliies a'.-ent spoliations committed on our commerce, almost from lh foun.datiou of our Government, by most foreign nations, nnd if he ccid 1, as I believe he will, succeed with France. Messrs. Co. will le thrown too f.:r in the back-grouni! ; beside tliis Uil those who have so long ami loudly prated R!T!linst military chieftains, will turnout to be frtlse prophets, unless they can compell General Jackson, ns they call it, to go to war with France. But this ll.ey cannot do the late i;.esa;o of the riesideut is calm, dignified, nnd ts it should he. On the f.rr-t "fiy of the present session, Mr. Tortcr ma le a report from a Committee appointed at the la-t session, on the subject of a new arrangement of the seat-, of the Jennie Chamber, lie re; cried in favor o: r."l.,r.irg the circular gallery to 1 idics end tcni.t mi n who attend there, and the other j. -Ucry t t ctRt'omen. The Ilepcitits arc stationed in the Chamber back of the Senators, and none but privi'cdjjeJ mcmberi. to wil: pio.Mit and past members of Cong, r ., lieatU of Dcpartim tits, Foreign Mini-tirs and their a!!aiis, l. States Judiciary, and the Lxccuiives of Slates. The
Report wns concurred in. I ins is an exceil- ni arrangement for bn-ines-, lis the bri-ht eye and smiles of the Fair would certainly lave a tendency at least to divide, the attention of g'ave Scna'.or. They, as now placed in the pnFery, are as they should he, looked at, and the Senators are left to husiiu s. The llonseof Reic'i-ntatixcs sat on Friday, nnd the day was spent in argument on the subject of aholi-hinj; slavery in this Di'tiict. The Southern members seem to take fire whenever it is mentioned. From tho West no memorials have been presi nttd, nntl it is to be hoped will not be. Those fanatics who stir this subject, ihould know and consider wi 11 the mischief
area territory of the United States, and under
their protection, have a Governor (Horner) and all the appendages ; anil also claim to be a sovcreicn Slate, with Governor Mason Com-mnndrr-in-Chief of the Army and Navy, bark canoes, and all, in Michigan ! lie may be called a Bashaw with two tails. In the llou-e, on Thursday, I bad the pleacuietol car vour Representative, Mr. Lane on the subject of refcrriiijx the application of Michigan. He took the lloor and entertained the House with an able argument on the merits of the c.nse. He is a man of talent, a very Rood speaker, and makes an able Representative; he ha- not a superior from the State to my mind. It is said that Mr. llannecan is an eloquent youiii man. 1 have not heard him speak, but
judjiii.t; from appearances lie stands well w ith
the members of the House. The news from North Carolina is that Judge Yhite is nominated for l'rcfident, while Ala
bama, about the same day, revoked, repealed,
and reversed her resolution of lastyear nominating Judge White for the Presidency. The nomination of General Harrison by yourSlate was to he expected from the number of his old Tippecanoe Soldiers residing there, lie has, so far asl am informed, been nominated by only a part of Mr. Clay's fiietids. Two of the UJnl'emen named as Kleclors, I am told that Gen. Harrison's friends will say were Jackson men, were never considered Jackson men after they failed to get the oiliees they wanted. Yours truly.
