Stopping at a town in Massachusetts, i!rh i hnd formerly known, t thought wl tbo few momenta ol preparing dinner an,! changing stages by L-nrmcr out tllOSC whom ill OUth 1 had seen start ahead of nv in busmcss, and w hose virtues or error?, had been pointed at as examples to be mutated or benemn to he avoided, in my comity turn to navigate the channels of manIt is delightful occasionally to catch a glimpse nJown the pathway c life, and see how have fared those w hor-e starling we hive witnessed, and whose course "we have for a season known II 000. to heave a sigh where crroi? r.ave turned the travelers aside, or smile where virtue has been the pilot of the guide. 1 shocked at the inroads which in temperance had made, and heard with' inexpressible pain, tne story 01 mieiy and anguieh that includes the fullering of hundreds for every instai.ee of drunk rnness. IVly informant knew the story of all, and of twenty for whom I made rtn inquiry, the prison, the alms house or the grave, had been the refuge of fifteen from intoxication. Let his story, told in a few minutes, of one for whom 1 made special inquiries, be read with the confidence deserved by entire truth, excepting only the name and the loca tion. Williams ha J started in life wit.i r.ctivc habits, a good constitution an 1 a devotion to business; and at his 2 2d year found himself master of a merchant vessel. Attention and perseverance supplied the place of education, and if

It was a cheerful sight to see him on the Sabbath, after his return from a voyage, approach the church with his amiable and exemplary wife and their ilock of children. The" hearty shake and the honest congratulations of his townsmen on his ar rival, told plainly the estimation in which he was held. An interruption of commerce placed Williams for a short time out of employment, but could not impair his means of comfortable support; they Aw ere am pie; but idleness increased habits ol sociability, the fashion of exhibiting 'he bottle, and of leading in the hospitable participator of i!s contents, engendered an appetite for the intoxicating draught, and a mind not well cultivated, jiclded to influences of idleness and improper companions. Let it iuftice, Williams lost confidence of the merchants, lost h is property, lo?t the regard of his children, lost the last stay of M,$effirpcit. He became a drunkard; a beastly attachment swallowed up the lat dollar he had. nnd with it seemed to swallow up all shame. All was gone all, but the love of his wife. It is much that will quench that flame in woman. She may weep, complain, condemn, and even die, but net until then, will her low get out. Ilis wife sustained the reverse like like a woman. Necessitated to loae her house deeply mortgaged, she gathered her numerous hildicn into a single room at a distance; there she Siis t atned them with a decency that showed her a Christian. Years passed em, but brought no change, except that regular decadence from bad to worse, .i . . -.i . . . it. i inai marKS inc uruniiaru s eoiiisc: auci ilhan.s was lost to society, to hi fam ilr. Untied States Gazelle. SM ALT. THINGS. Wo have often found occasion, says the Traveler, to notice the importance of an attention to small things. A glass of wine, spilled on Sirs. Maiham's gown, cost Europe a war. Many a slight injury, and inconsiderate word, has cost many a man his life, and been the ruin of the peace of many a family. The little contradictions which often happen between friend--, may bc slight in themselves and when taken singly, but continued, they have irrevocably severed the ties of the purest and strongest friendship. As Hannah More says, Small tiling?, contempt, slight word?, unmixed with liate, Make p in number what tbej want in weight. It is so in morals, it is so in manners, it is so iu all the intricacies of social intercourse and the concerns of human life. A man who has r.cvct involved himself in the enormity of crime, may ruin his reputation by carelessness and indilference to the smaller items cf virtue and vice, which make a vast difference in the aggregate account. Few men have the opportunity of displaying the w hole character of a gentleman in a single act, it is an attention to the smaller decencies and civilities, and kindness of common and daily intercourse, which generally constitute the formation of the character. So it is in the acquisition of wealth lew of us make or lose thousands of dollars every day, but nil of us acquire or spend a lew cents or a few shillings which in the revolution of a few seasons, mmluru ... i,, r,,,.,,,;,.,, 7 , ,v. A late number of the London Courier contains the following extract of a letter from America: "I am travelling in Vermont State for pleasure and information. I have journeyed 500 miles in my own carriage, in easy stages and have not seen a single person in my progress to whom I should have dared to ,lfer alms! As I was detained an hour or two a few days since, I saw a sturdy looking farmer pass the inn driving a one horse cart, loaded Willi wool, on which he was seated. He drove to a store, shouldered his bales of wool, one nfier another, and placed them in the merchant's shop. Who do you think it was! Palmer the present Govi cmor of the 6tatc of Vermont!"
