Orisrtnl i:-.y. fur te Timrs. iirncixTit ix composition. It has alw ays appeared to me a siraegr thin? that newspapers generally, ope ciallv villasie newspapers, should eon
tain so little of original composition hi
them. The wonder is th '.'realer ice.
as in every place, city, town or ullage, there are always subjects of interest enough, and minds enough to think, and pens enough to write every paper foil to overilow ing. In addition lo a! the topicsof a gvin ral nature r.ohr.cot' d with the great concerns of politics, and education, and religion, there always will be hrnl matins of sufficient importance to give interest to the columns of a newspaper. And here I cannot hut express my belief, that if F.ditors generally would devote more of their attention to subjects that more imrncdiatr ,'y conant the inhabitants of the village und its via'nily the Merchant, the Mechanic, tinFarmer the state of commerce, the principles and improvements, in each branch of mechanics, the discoveries in agriculture, such as the nature of soils and different modes of planting and cultivating, they would pet more subscribers arid do mare pood. i 1! jocls connected with the immediate welfare of the ullage its improvement ia external appearance, th- manners of the inhabitants, the diffusion of knowledge among them, the encouragement ef god morals, and the cultivation of sociable and hospitable virtues, and the cherishing of a spirit of general intelligence, will always afford topics that cannot fail to be read, and upon which any man of a moderate Fnglish education and good common sense can write a useful essay, if he w ill. And here I will delay no longer, hut come to the subject of tins communication Why do so Jiir xvriti' fa- rr;vpapen s.ncralty, and v:ha do so fev trriVc for ours? It is not because there are' none among us who think! We have intelligent men Doctors, Merchants, and Mechanics, of general inf.-.imation.
whose conversation is interesting, whose views ef tiling ;ie Itr.ge aod hh--:::!. vvho;c rcmaiks are ofien original a, id striking, and whoso thoughts on inosi subjects, if only eommitted to paper and extended to their legitimate conclusions, would benefit their ftllow inc.::. and enlarge the circle uf their inf.uence. Out of a variety of causes that prevent men generally from sending their thoughts into the world through the medium of the press, 1 will only notice two of the principal ones, and which, too, may he easily obviated. The ihst cf these to which I shall allude, is the fact that mr:i in general arc n;l in ti habit i. f warding their obs nations awl thought? even on those subjects with which they are most familiar, and to which they devote their attention. Sanpose for the sake of illustration, thai the Mechanic cr Artiz in were in the custom of noting in a com.no-.i Place Hook, every little improvement suggested to his mind with regard to the mechanism of different aith.les of his trade: the principles cf architecture, or the construction of the implements of workmanship; or even w ere lie to keep an account of the difficulties presenting themselves with tegard to old modes j construction and building, what a fund cf valuable information might be collected in tliis manner, and what hints might be give:- to seientiue arid ingenious men, leading perhaps to inventions and improvements whose uses 10 society could never I e calculated. Look at the invention of gun powder the art of Printing, the application of Steam all which were suggested by the oh servalion of what in tkcmyehf.s would be considered trivial and insignificant ficts. And is the bound try of improvement reached ! Are there no li Ids of nature yet unexplored? Has scicneiscaled thesullimest height, or exp'oied the farthest depths'? Five hundred years a go and le.-s,lhe mechanic thonght that invention was ehau-tod, and never dreamed of Printing Presses, or Steam Boats, or Uail-roads! Xay, lie would hive been pointed at as some hair-brained enthusiast, who lived ia a region of airy dreams, if I, p. In 1 ventured cve:i lo pre did Mi'h extravagance as this; juntas the hunter after the perpetual motion, is now a days denied the ue of reason, and, by universal consent is calh d a ma -Iman. What is it that has given some prof ssional men superiority and influence over other, but the f ict of their recording and publishing thr. phenomena, w bother of mind or matter, nr both, thai have come under their observation? , lUe ind-Hry in seizing upon and securing small orourlences, and connecting together a great maty nnalogitis though they may be apparently insignificant, f icts has often led to the formation of the most splendid theories in Science, and the. most n-.f,l discoveries in Art. What eau 'he rtiy sitiindofor the. f ttuic ads aacc-
menl of his profession, w ho is content to follow the track of those who have gone before, to make the same prescriptions, and use the same remedies that have been used by his fathers ; and, look
ing upon anv new features ot diseases or new phenomena in the operation e! medicines as mere exceptions to estabiidi-
id opinions, and leading to no remedying of old errors, and to no introduction of a new practice, w hile he makes no allowances for the influence new fah-
