TO OUR I1 AT HONS. The present number completes six tion'.ln since tiro commencement of litis paper, and v. c congratulate our patrons n the prosperity and happiness under which it meets (Item. Since our csta-bli-hmcr.t among! them cur happy ;-ouutry l.-ns been much disturbed by nlcnal commotions, and great have been the embarrassments and vexatious Jie disappointments arising from the :fiifucd state of our monied institutions. Hut Pro idencc in His goodness Ins been pleased to favor this little section of the union with health and competenro, and while wc enjoy these, we have no real cause for complaint: and although we expect to feci the general shoc k that has already befallen the greater part of the land, yet, wc should bear in mind that, "Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof,' and while wc make use of all the means in our power to lighten the coming

stroke, we should not suffer oui stives Id be chilled by the saddening aspect, or give over to the horrors of fearful anticipations. In our editorial capacity, we have stiovc to render general satisfaction, and have studiously avoided whatever might, in our opinion, lend in the least to give offence to any. The duties of an editor are trying and arduous; and happy indeed is he who has the faculty f pleasing all. The principles upon which our paper was first instituted have been closely adhered to; but w bile y ielding obedience to the public's claims, we have been careful to preserve, the printer's riqhts. We have never exceeded the bounds of the esta

blished priviledgcs confirmed to the prcs-, and we trust we shall never be h.und disposed to do it: and if any little disaffeclions have found their way among our subscribers they are merely ideal, and we trust are very few hen we cast the eye over the map

of the small sphere of our operations, wo behold it most beautifully variegate! with all the charms that nature can Ix slow and all the improvements that industry and art have been capable of eluding. With the majestic Ohio rolhng his smooth wave along our eastern b i ders, an extensive level of luxuriant soil that stretches out in every other direction around us, and neighboring bill, whose native aspect alone at this inlixening season of the year is calculated to fill the soul with delight, but whose pictuicsue appearance, arising lioin the spacious farms the pastures, the orchards, the richly clad wheat-

fields give a double interest to the scene it is truly a region worthy of

admiration, and well calculated to a

rouse every energy of both body and

mind.

And amid the multiplicity of inter

ests to be found, shall the newspaper

be denied a place? That sentinel which

itches over the fortunes, the lives and

the liberties of the people, shall it lie

dead and lifeless under the powers of

neglect! O, no, never! While the

genius of Liberty shall continue to prevail, and the bright beams of intelligence to break upon the mind, the press -hall live and prosper; and in propori to the operation of these benign influences will be its tide of prosperity. With these remarks we shall leave the subject, after returning our sincere thanks to our patrons for their generous support, and soliciting a continuance of theirs and an increase of public favor.

If the Supervisor of the lower dis trict does not give a little belter attention to the streets in that part of the

town, we shall be almost tempted to name the subject.

A friend has handed us the first No. of a super-imperial paper of the above title, issued at Cincinnati on the 2d of May. The mechanical appearance of the paper is r.caf, and arranged in a workman like manner. It is published by C. Holliday and J. F. Wright; edited by T. A. Morris, and under the supermlcndance and patronage of the Methodist Episcopal Church. From the variety of original and selected matter in the number before us. it will, undoubtedly be a valuable acquisition to the cause of christian religion, and

wot thy a place in every family . Subscriptions to the above paper will be received by the Rev. S. R. Robinson, agent for this village. He may be found at the house of Rev. James Jones. We are requested to say that a meeting of the Disciples of Christ will take place on Friday next, at 1 1 o'clock A. M., in the house belonging to the Reformers, and continue three days. Walter Scott, James Challen, James G. Mitchell and several other proclaimers are expected. A general attendance of the citizens of this place and vicinity is respectfully solicited. The young men of Rising Sun, in favor of organizing a Volunteer Com

pany, are requested to meet at tiie office of this paper, this evening at enrIv c-indh: light.

Eo.rirME.T roil Major J. Downing. The Boston Republican says: Some wag at Lexington has manufactured a sheet iron pistol of "colas?;. I'1 dimensions for Maj. Downing. The pistol is on a heavy oak slock, seme two feet in length, w ilh a large iron gun lock, and half a horse shoe for a trigger. It is tin mounted, and is one of the cutest specimens of yankee ingenuity and wit we have lately seen manufactured. The cartridge box is furnished with canepole cartridges, and ornamented with a Inge brass eagle. The articles are

at the public bouse of Lol Richardson, and furnish much sport for the stage passengers. The Col. has been offered .$20 for the equipment, to send to the city of Washington.

The Luccsts. Persons in this bor

ough, -digging under trees in their gardens have; discovered that this devour

ing insect is making its approach to the surface of the earth. A few weeks

more and w e need not perhaps perform the ollice of heralds to them, as by that

time our readers will hear enough of them without consulting the columns of newspapers. Their appearance this

year establishes the period of their re-

lurn to be legular every seventeen

cars in this part of the country.

By the follow ing Circular, which we find in a late Vincennes paper, it appears that Governor Noble and Judge

Read, the two candidates for Governor

have agreed to submit their pretensions

to the judgement of ther fellow-citizens,

without traversing the state and mak

ing siumn speeches.. llns arrange

ment will explain to the people in some

parts of the state the cause of these

gentlemen not complying with their en

gagements to make addresses, the a-

greement mentioned, in the circular

having been made since their cards

were out. File arrangement itself, w e

apprehend, will receive pretty general

approbation. Indiana Journal.

CIRCULAR. Franklin April 2, 1S34.

Fellow-Citizens : The claims w hich

our private altairs have upon our time

seem to render it inconvenient for us to

visit alt the counties. This consideration, connected w ith that of our having been previously before you as competitors for the ollice of governor, to which we now aspire, has induced us

to mutually agree, that we will submit

it to our fellow-citizens to say who

shall be their governor for the next term; and therefore take this method

of countermanding the notices sent by

us respectively to the counties of which

tins circular is addressed. N. NOBLE, J. G. READ.

In an extract of a letter from Lon

don, dated the 13th March, it is said

that 750,000 Mexican dollars has been bought by Mr. Rothchild for the United

States. "I wonder how any one can eat their breakfast before reading a newspaper,"

said an old borrower of this article. "I

wonder how any one can eat his breakfast after reading a botrorccd paper," said his more conscientious wife.

The Fruit. As far as we have heard, all the fruit in the west was destroyed by the severe frost on the night -of the 2Gth ult. It was rather a freeze

than frost, ice having been formed of

some thickness. We have seen young pears as large as the end of the finger that must have been completely frozen

through; and with the exception of a

few currants and probably an apple or peach, that here and theic fortunately escaped, we have no doubt our counlry

will be destitute of these rich bevera

ges of life in which it is generally bundjul.

A Pedestrian. An Englishman ar-

rived in our city en iuonday evening from the South, who has attracted a good deal of notice. He. has travelled

on foot throughout all the countries of

Europe, without any ether known motive than the gratification of his own

curiosity, the apparent insufficiency of

this reason for so much fatigue, has brought upon him the suspicions of official agents and caused him to be repeatedly arrested. He is now examining our country as he has examined Europe. He is said to be a man of properly and intelligence,, though his appearance indicates neither. His habiliments are mean and all his baggage

consists of a small bundle and a cage,

which contains the only companion of his travels a favorite canary bird. .V 1 . Journal of Commerce. The reports of the failure of the Bank of Virginia, are. altogether without foundation. Nevertheh'ss,so strongly was the report believed in Washing
