From the Southre?i Agriculturist. ON PROTECTING SEED CORN FROM BIRDS. ?lr. Editor, A Young Planter in your Novernbrr number say.-, "there are many cf your re.vjeis who can
make vnlu ibl -a, communications." If
you think the method I have adopted to get rid of minding .or:) when planted, ai coining under that head, you arc
welcome to it. It is by smiting. Half a bushel of feed-corn is p. it in a tab and hot water poured on it, a half pint of tar i then added find the corn kept const-iritly ?tirr-d, until every grain h l;i r.! coated with it. Soot is now put it) the whole stirred until very grain is perfectly black. This a.nli-'.i I h ue adopted for many years: neve- haw a mh.der. and the stand is
much hctier than when I had to mind it. The crows and larks will visit your tn.dds a- s.vju as the grain m ikes it appearance, (which will be two days later than when not sooted.) and try many of the hill?, crcping one grain and then h aving and going to a second, having plucked here and there they will leave the (kid entirely, finding the grain too bitter to be eaten. As we always plant more than we mean I ) have, the. few they lake is not of the least const oneuee. If this com
munication i? of smy service, I shall he gratified, icmeuneihg this is nothing new, hut it may be, to some, of value. II. C. R. -Non:. We adopted this pi an many yens. ago, and never had occasion to place any one in the fields, nor had we to supply more places than was usual, where iheie was a regular supply of little negre.es i a scare away the birds. In one rc-pect this plan answers better
light one? shoot the stronger. This doctrine will apply to all trees, particularly to the whole tribe of firs it will undoubtedly substitute clear wood for knots, and of all this management, from their particular uses, the latter stands in most need, and will be most improv
ed by it. This operation will advance the quality nearer to that of foreign timber; far it may be traced, that where trees are tall and clear of knots (by cutting the branches close to the
stem) the whole substance of the wood is better and of finer grain; and it appears likely that such will always he the case. The practice of cutting olT large limbs (o improve the timber, should de
cidedly be condemned ; we may daily see the deplorable olfect of it. By judicious pruning and thinning every year, it will be found that poo:- land is converted by these means to a good
piii pose, and at a trifling expense. From the Farrier and .Mechanic. Sin, Some years since peaches we:e abundant in this neighborhood, n aw we
scarcely see a bearing tree. Phis is owing t3 a worm that eats the roots of the tree-, and causes their death. Having lo-t all my peach trees, in this way two or three years ago, I was led to seek a remedy for (he evil, and in the course of a long a nil attentive observation ascertained that this destructive
worm is. m od need liorn the vj" nl a
