Algeo went to some ot his companions, borrowed a Spanisli ke.'ife, returned to the deck, broke dawn the door, and pursued Barns to the. stem of the boat, where, after making several unsuccessful attempts to, Ptah said Barns, he struck one of (j,0 stanchions of the boat in such : manner that the knife dropped, w hic'n w as immediately seized by Barns who Jmu- indicted seven wounds on the 'v jdy of Algeo, of which six were morital While Barns was thus busily en

During the rest of the dav, Algeo was

constantly entreating his companions to

avenge his death, lor he was aware that bis time in this world was short;

hut as they did not seem to pay much attention to his entreaties, the Captain and passengers did not feel the least

uneasy lor the safely of barns, whose

wound was hut slight. It scem:, how

ever, that more attention was paid to

them than was supposed; for, at about

3 o'clock, on the morning of the 21st,

the unfortunate Barns was shot, whnc lying in his hammock. The perpetra

tor of this cowardly deed was unknown ;

though suspicion at once rested upon John Walker, who hr.d not been seen

for several hours. At 6 o'clock the

boat was searched from top to bottom,

but nothing of alker could be found During the rest of the day little of con sequence occurred, excepting the con

plant drunkenness of the mate and sailers, who by their threats very plainly showed that they were disrhased with

the captain and passengers, for offering a reward of five hundred dollars, for

the discovery of the unknown murder,

for, from circumstances, we were confi

dent that more than one had a hand in

the business, On the night of the 22d,

a plot was discovered, which, if carried into effect, would have proved the destruction of the boat and passengers.

On this discovery, the male and four of

the sailors were arrested and confined

The boat was again searched, and to

our great surprise John Valuer was found in the hold. We immediately put him in confinement with his companions, keeping a strict watch over tbcm until we arrived at Mill's Point, whore they were delivered over to the civil authority of that place. The plot appeared to be as follows: A slowmatch was to have been put to two kegs

of powder, which were in the hold ; the

six mutineers were to make their escape by means of the small boat, leav

ing the rest to their fate.

A young man named hell, hoarding

at the Franklin House in the village ot Cleavcland, Ohio, lately took a dose of laudanum of a stronger preparation than he wa? aware of, and died immediately.

A jicio horror. A poor woman, living in a kitchen cellar in Water st., Phila., lately heard her child utter a moanh'g noise in the course of the night, but being weary she paid little attention to it at first, but being again awaked by its cries and hastening to it, found a number of large rats feeding upon her infant. The unfortunate little creature was so horribly mangled as to leave little hopes at first of its recover. It is now, however, the oninicn of the

physicians:, thr.t it may be saved though it will be necessary to amputate the arm. Aaiiantityof ircnlhcr A New Hampshire paper says they have bad several days of warm weather in that part of

for a ood deal of weather during the

One of them letting the candle fdl, was beaten for the offence by tin other, whose name was James Algeo. Some time after this one of i,o. deck passengers, whose name wai Barns,

tions a rnst dismal disaster that lately

befel a French soldier at Grenoble, while exercising at target. Having accidentally spilt a quantity of powder from a ball cartridge into his "upper works," Monsieur in firing off his tirelock, ignited the loose grains, and blow off his mustasbics, but received no other material injury. This we suppose

may be fairly encugh called a "hair

breadth escape. Some European writers still enter tain the idea that the original progeni

tors of our race w ere exceedingly large, and tall in stature; and a French Academian has even proceeded to give the

precise altiludeof some of them. Adam,

for instance, was 1 23 feet 9 inches in

height; Noah about 100, Julius Cesar

a little less than 5, &c. This theory

of a progressive diminution in the size of mankind is exceedingly ingenious and satisfactory, and we admire the

symmetry of the system, especiaily.

1 he only trouble we have in the prem

ises is, in the case of Cesar; for were

the progress downward proportioned

between him and old Noah, the race now-a-days ought to be about the size

of a dwarf gad fly.

that place. Globe.

The Buffilo (N. Y.) Journal, on the meteoric phenomena of the 1 1 th, differs in two important particulars from

all other accounts we have seen of that

occurrence 1st, in describing the hi

minous bodies as shooting upwards as well as in all other directions; and 2d, in staling that the Aurora Borealis was

visible, during the w hole time.

It is the opinion of many reflecting

persons, that the Emancipation cf the slaves in the British West Indies, will have the same effect that is said to have

produced in St. Domingo. It will par

alyze, at least for a time, the agricul

ture of the islands lessen their pro

duclions, and raise the price of eugars. In this case, tbe duty on the article may be still further reduced; and a greater demand for our slaves may be

created, for cultivating the sugar lands in Florida and Louisiana, in addition

to the value which the increased prices of cotton have already produced. Thus

our slaves may be taken off in greater numbers, and at higher prices; and the population of lhe south Atlantic States

undergo a considerable modification.
