&i rWJiM Y, NO VEMBER 23, U533. We hare boon not a little amused by the perusal of an article on "Animal Magnetism," an extract from w hicli will be found in this day's paper. It
would, really, seem a matter of astonishment, if the learned men of France should suffer a conjuring (r.w impostors to take the advantage of their credulity, and, thereby, introduce to the world a n,:W astern ot" witchcraft. And yet, we must confess we h.ive strong suspicions that so it will turn on'. For, although the commissioners appointed to investigate tins subject stem to hive done it w ith the utmost circumspection, itill, it i" possible that they were deceived. If the result of the experiments implied nothing more than a change in the physical powers of the animal rconomv, it might appear reasonable enough to he entitled to some credit. Dut when we ai e told, that animal magnetism endows the patient with supernatural powers that it not only ena
bles htm to see through his ey elidg, but to determine the character of inscruti hie diseases, and foretell events with certainty and exactness we cannot believe it. And yet, the. learned reviewer? have declared it unwise and ivration at to furr. aii opion on such subjects as these, oui ; that we should "humhlv and ddigently in inire, hut not tleciuc. Little a wo care for these chilling admonitions, we would by no means have 'he subject prematurely abandoned. Ithw already mad-- an impression t i? is either flood or evil; and a the e-i.ii:e of (he ! titer, always operate jth l!;e err 'st power when least exposed, we shonl 1 hk" hwe it thoroughly i'lve-tigi'ed, that t!ii'P shall not a na. low of doubt remain upon the mind ef anv on", in regard to the pretend d iifi'iTicoof this mysteri js aent. over the et.'lf-d attributes cf the huavm soul. And whenever it shall appear to on r entire satis f tctiori, that an;- agent Tithin the control of man. is capable r.f endowing a rr.orti! being Kith supernatur tl powers and the spirit ot propheev, then indeed, shall we be prepared to hr beve. that 4death is an eterr, i! sleep." With these remarks we rv,ut t.tk leave cf "animal magnetism:" wide we shall look, w ith anxious eps ctation, towards the Hand cf msttrie-'' for fresh light tiprci ihis s-tnge sobjeet. We have received "'veral anonvreoti communications on the subject ol lain ntion, from which we shall sel ct ot;e for publication in our next. In the nvtn time, we would oberve to our on et.pondci.ts, by n-ny cf a damper, that this subject is so tamdiar, and has been so much harped on, it requires the touch of a masterly hand, to give it that degree of interest to which it is unquestionably e n t i t led .
We 6o not Itke to complain of our country friends on any account whatever; but if they will only let m have as many EOGS as will 'clear our roilee. we shall esteem it a particular favor. The pork season is now opened, and many a "jrfo'e tag" (question) is agitated in our street.
Cannot our Lyceum he re-organised? We are of opinion it would succeed better now than nr anv former period. A (Will). To publishers of News papers and Periodical- in the United States and tin British Province-. The publishers ef the New F.ngland Wet klv Review are de-irou-of making
