D., was a native of Rhode Island, havinpr been bora and brought up in the town of Warren. He was a 6on of the late Judge Randall.' In the year 1832 he entered the Sophomore Class of Brown University, graduating in 1835, under the Presidency of Rev. Dr. Wayland After pursuing his theological studies at the New York Seminavv, he became Rector of the Church of the Atcension, in Fall River, wbere be remained five years, In 1814 he removed to Boston, preaching at first to a little parish gathered at Rodman Hall, on Washington street. When the Church of the Messiah, on Florence street, was built, he became the Rector, remaining with tbeoa twenty-one years, or until he was appointed Bishop. Since his consecration, Dec. 28, 18G3, he has accomplished wonders in Colorado, holding service in the roughest places, establishing churches and seminaries; and performing in various "ways good missionary work. Matthews Hall, Denver, was founded by him, from the large gift of Mr. Nathan Matthews. The exposure incident to long journeyings and hard work in that new and mining country undoubtedly shortend liis days. As a preacuer, a pastor, a laborer in the Sunday School, and in every department of the chnvch, he will Jong be remem bered and esteemed. He was of fine address, faithful at every post of duty, a man of uncommon abili ties, and a ready fluent speaker. Bat it j3 as a Free and Accepted Mason, that we are especially inter ested iu oar departed brother He became a member ol tue ureter in 1815, since which time he has never faild to uphold by word and deed, the great and glorious principles which it. inculcates. Like the la mented Dr. Tart of Pawtucket, he was never ashamed or afraid to show his colors, believing Masonry to be, next to the church, the best and most powerful institution in existence, for conserving society, and promoting the highest good of mankind. In laib he was appoint ed Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, in 1848 Deputy Grand Master, and in 1852 Grand Master, retaining this latter po&i tion three yean. He was fro quentlv called upon to deliver Ma sonic addresses, and he never failed to acorn t himself with credit and honor. The bretheren in Provi dence R. I., will not soon forget the masterly discourse which he gave in the First Baptist Church, at the celebration of the Centennial Anm of St. John's Lodcre. June 24, 1857. It strengthened and encouraged all hearts, and quick - ened into renewed life and energy the Lodges of both city and State. We cannot more fitly close this imperfect sketch of Bishop Randall, than by giving the following extract from a speech made by bin, at a recent Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts 'This Society, in distinction from all nther human institutions, re quires faith in God as a prerequisite , ' " of admission to its pale, makes His N cri-r, TTm.il if a own Great Lifirht. UVUIJ , v v. - u nrithnnt which it cannot work,
teaches a morality drawn from that word, and enjoins that charity
which comes of the Divine Law of love. These constitute the immortality of Freemasonry. No wonder, then, that it still lives; that the fires of anti-Masonry did not consume it, and the follies of its members have not rent it in sunder. Based on such principles, and designed for such purposes, it has
not outlived its usefulness, and it is not likely to for many generations to come Never in its history has this Brotherhood of olden time "had before it a nobler work than it has to day. The tendencies of the age, the signs of the times, the condition of society, all indicate its work. Who that has an observing eye does not see that irreverance is becoming more and more an evident feature of the common mind, as . manifested toward God and man? Now a society that recognizes the existence of God, and makes His Word the rule of life, and teaches ine great doctrines ol tne immor tality of the soul and the resurrec tion of the body, may do much in arresting the increasing tendency, and saving society from the infinite mischiefs which are sure to swarm from this popular evil. Skepticism and a miscalled lib eralism, whieh is only another term for an ill-disguised infidelity, are doing much to lessen the sancity of the Bible in the eyes of the peo ple. Contests are now going on. as reported in the public prints, involving the question of casting the Holy Writings out of the public schools. This is a dark omen. On the mid tide of such influences stands this Fraternity, which claims Solomon as its first Grand Master, which keeps this Inspired Book open on its altars, a part of its con stitution, and so necessary to its very existence that a Lodge cannot be held without it. Who will say what shall be the influence of Free Masonry in resisting these tenden cies, and in promoting that profound i everence from man to the revel ation of his Creator? J. hen, wno tnat reads tno news paper does not see what is the political drift of the world on both sides of the great water; that the tendencies are everywhere, at home and abroad, toward that extreme of liberty which runs into licen tiousness, to the utter destruction of all regard for lawful authority or rightful possessions? The spirit of agrarianism is abroad, and doing fearful harm in the exitement of the worst passions, creating false expectations, which, rising into demands, prompt to violenco and blood, thereby sapping the foundation on which rests the fabric of well-ordered society, and all true liberty. Growing disrespect for all authority, disregard of ancient usage, contempt of forms, are some of the minor manifestations of this tendency to a leveling indi vidualism, which is showing itself in the old lands and in new. Will any man. pretend to say, that a society, which has come down from a remote antiquity, far away beyond the record of any other human in, stitution, which symbolizes the authority of government in its order to a degree that a single blow of the Master's gavel instantly brings order out of. confusion ; where liberty, equality and fraternity are not only recognized, but illustrated j and realized; where loyalty to the country and obedience to its rightful government are duties enioind, that such a Fraternity, in such an age as tins, nas not a mission The horror of the Vevay Dem ocrat of Bastiles. is genuine. He "knows how it is himself," but it has not reformed him in the least bit In the last week's issue of his hebdomadal he said: Democrats are not responsible for the grab or other rascally legis1 ation. borne of our party, to make the matter odious, to fasten it upon the Radicals, may have helped the swindle along. To make the Republicans odious, Democrats should be permitted to lie and steal. That kind of morality is vicious and pernicious. Madison Courier. Dr. J. They arc the great blood purifier and a life-giving principle, a perfect licuovator and Invijrorator of the system. Never before in the history of the" world has a medicine been compounded possessing the remarkable qualities of Vixkgar Bittkrs in healing the sick of every disease man U heir to. . They arc a" gentle Purgative as well as a Tonic, relieving Congestion or Inflammation of the Liver and Visceral Organs, in Bilious Diseases The properties of Dr. Walker's Viseoar Bitters are Aperient, Diaphoretic, Carminative, Nutritious, Laxative, Diuretic, Sedative, CouDter-Irritant, Sudorific, Alterative, and Anti-Bilious. Grateful Thousands proclaim Vinegar Bitters the most wonderful Invigorant that ever sustained the sinkiug system. No Person can take these Bitters according to directions, and remain long unwell, provided their bones are not destroyed by mineral poison or other means, and vital organs wasted beyond repair. llilious, Remittent, and In termittent Fevers, which are so prevalent in the valleys of our great rivers throughout the United States, especially those of tho Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Red, Colorado, Brazos, Itio Grande, Pearl, Alabama, Mobile, Savannah, Koanokc, James, and many others, with their vast tributaries, throughout our entire country during tho Summer and Autumn, and remarkably so during seasons of unusual heat and dryness, are invariably accompanied by extensive derangements of the stomach and liver, and other abdominal viscera. In their treatment, a purgative, exerting a powerful influence upon these various organs, is essentially necessary. There is no cathartic for the purpose equal to Dr. J. Walker's Vinegar I-jITTKrs, as they will speedily remove the dark-colored viscid matter with which the bowels are loaded, at the same time stimulating the secretions of the liver, and generally restoring the healthy functions of the digestive organs. Fortify the body against disease by purifying all its fluids with Vinegar Bittkrs. No epidemic can take hold of a system thus fore-armed. Dyspepsia or Indigestion, licadiche, Pain in the Shoulders, Coughs, ache. Tightness of tbe Chest, Dizziness, Sour Eructations of tno stomach, Uaa 1 a.sto in the Mouth, Bilious Attacks, Palpitation of tho Heart, Inflammation of tho Lungs, Pain in the region of the Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symptoms; are the offsprings of Dyspepsia. NATURE'S OKEAT REXEDT) THROAT AND LUNGS. fit is gratifying to us to inform the public that Dr. L. Q. C. Wishart's Pine Tree Tar Cordial for Throat and Lung Diseases, has gained an enviable reputation from the At lantic to the Pacific ocean, and from thence tn some of the first families of Europe, not through the press alone, but by persons throughout the States actually benefitted and cured at his office. "While he publish less, so say our reporters, he is unable to sup ply the demand. It gaius and holds Its rep u tat ion: First. Not by stopping cough, but by loosening and assisting nature to throw off the unhealthy matter collected about the throat and bronchial tubes, which causes irritation. Second. It removes the cause of irritation (Which produces cough) of the mucous membrane and bronchial tubes, assists the lungs to act and throw off the unhealthy secre tions, aud purifies the blood. Third. It is free from squills, lobelia, ipe cac and opium, of which most throat and lung remedies are composed, which allay cough only and disorganize the stomach. It has a soothing effect on the stomach, acts on the liver and kidneys, and lymphatic and nervous regions, thus reaching to every part of the system, and in its invigorating and purifying effects, it has gained a repu tation which it must hold above all others in the market. 2STOTICE!
