RichmondPaUadium, UlyssesS. Grant. ' We make the above announcement, not to attract special notice, or to indicate extra-officious zeal, but because it expresses OUR MOST EMPHATIC PREFERENCE, .and we don't see why we should not say so. Gen. Grant, in some eminent respects, has shown himself as much superior in civil as in military affairs. He has promptly taken positions and assumed responsibilities which no mere politician, of the ordinary run of oar statesmen, would have dared to do. Take for instance his direct announcement in his inaugural address in favor of Negro Suffrage. The party which elected him, had dodged the question in its platform. What other -men, outside of the pronounced Radicals, but would have followed that example as President, and dodged, or at least postponed a declaration on the subject? But not so with Grant An old-timo Democrat before the war, he at once demonstrated the soundness of his conversion, the frank heroism of his nature, as well as the highest statesmanship, by taking the bull by the horns. : In hke manner on the subject of the payment of the National Debton which, also, his party had trimmed and prevaricated, he did not hesitate to - take the responsibility of a clear statement of his position, at the imminent hazard of his popularity. Again, his putting the management of our Indian Affairs in Quaker hands, shows a mind much above the grade of the mere politician a practical wisdom which is being vindicated by results. Last, but not least, we applaud his prompt, manly, hearty recognition of the French f Republic now refreshing it was to every true man to hear cur Chief Magistrate "speaking right out in meeting" on that subject!
It was an example amidst the senseless pro-Prussian folly which had swept over the coun try, and showed that we have a President of eminent democratic proclivities. These few points alone in his record, among many similar, give to the world in General Ubant, ASSURANCE OF A MAN. To which let us not forget to add, that HE has FAITHFULLY REDEEMED ALL HIS PLEDGES TO THE PEOPLE. While, there fore, we are, as a general rule, in favor of "the one term pnn ciple," we are yet fully persua ded that, in the case before us, our Country CANNOT AFFORD TO DISPENSE WITH THE SERVICES. AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE FOR ANOTHER TERM OF OUR GREAT CAPTAINA TRUE, INDEPENDENT, HONEST MAN. Julian's Radical, Sept. 29, 1870. OUR SATURDAY NIGHT. A Poor Maa who ia Terr Rick. To-jnGHT we found a philosopher. If any of the boya who, ia different parts of the country read this paper, care, to know about him let them read, aloud or to themselves, and remember what kind of a man he was. His was a very plain, easy philosophy. It was thai of every-day life. From it we hare learned much, and taken much to think of . s : . 'j Seven or eight months ago, in one of the "carpenter shop In the city, we saw an old man a4 work repairing the frame of a grindatone. On his head was a little paper cap. He wore an apron made from such striped cloth as is used for bed-ticking . He seemed about sixty years of age. As be worked, he hummed one , of the old. long ago tunes, and aeemed Intent onlv on his work. He did net seem annoyed, puzzled or im patient He did not scowl, fret, swear, throw his tools down with a alam and act as if mad because pieces of wood and iron in his bands were not endowed with reason, and capable of teaching him kowtauee them. He worked son easy, . yet so certainly his woik seemed to grow so rapidly we could not help saying to him , Good afternoon, sir.' - ' Ah i the same to yon, slr Work seems to be a pleasure with you yon work so easily. Yes it is life, happiness, profit
and amusement.' How 10? ::.;!
Well, it is life, for by it I live. It is happiness, for I'm always
contented wfcenTm doing something1 useful. It is profit, for by It I accumulate from day to day. It is amusement, for it diverts my mind, and I am pleased to see this thing or that take shape and fin ish as I work. Now look at this grindstone frame. It sort of wab bled. I put a nail in there ; that set of counter braces under there, and now it stands up like a young man to be married. . Then the trough leaked. Saj s I 'I'll fix you, little gaper,' and half a dozen six-penny nails does the work. I notice with what care you take up and put down the tools you use. Yes, that is tho way. Every tool is my friend. We are partners . They do good work for me. Without them I could not get along. One thing I have t long since learned. They are never to blame. So it is of no use to get mad with them. If the nail does not start straight, the fault is not with the nail. If 1 do not drive it straight, I only am to blame. If the saw does not follow the line, the saw is not to blame, for it does nothing only as guided and forced back and forth. If the chisel is dull, it is not to blame, but I, for not keeping it sharp. Years ago I used to throw and slam the tools but long since I have learned that a better way is to keep cool, and think, and not fret. Wo left the old man at work In his shop, and walked away thinking of his philosophy. To-night we met him again. , On the street he bad stopped to buy a little fivecent bouquet of a ragged ten yearold girl. As he paid her for it we heard him say: " There, little posy-pod, is pay for the bouquet, and as .much more for you. ' . ; " 1 ''- . ' Looking up our eyes met, and be said: Ah, my InquUitvio friend, good eyening ! ' uooa evening, sir -neipine a poor little girl, are you ?. . Ye, a trifle. You are going the same way I am. Good.- We will walk together.' YeB.-I like to buy a flower now and then. It is Sat urday night. I am through work for the week. My little one is waiting for me at home. She aU ways nas me nouse cneery as a bit of June sunshine for me, and I like to let her know that I do no forget her. It helps us On in life, all these little favors or acts, or inongQis, or wnaiever you may call them. How old is your little one ? . How old? Let me see. We were married in 1836. I was then twenty-soven. She was three years younger. She must be about six ty, or along there. s" m a v . . m . xour wuei x tnougnt it was a little girl you spoke of. S3 it is! She is little to me. I see her all the time as she was then. Others say she hen grown old, but I don't see it as they do. Her hair is a little gray, like miner but I think that is from the fever she had same years ago. The thatoh may lose its lustre, but the hearth below is just as warm, yon know. You appear to be a happy, con tented man. And so I am. Why not? I never did a wrong to any person . I have a comfortable home. Earn ed it all myself . She has helped me has taken care of it, so she nas maae a nome oi iu mat is her work. It took two of us now it is ours, l never get drunk, so my little one is never in a worry about me. It is this worry about husbands and ohildren that make wives and mothers grow old before their time. My health was good when I was a boy a yonng man, and I have kept it so. I never 4 thought' myself crazy about being ricb. -, Wh4t is the nee of a man killing himself to keep himself? Like building a boat oa an island and then shoving it off to sea while he stands on the shore, un able to escape. That is no good way. I always wanted to be com fortable always have been. From my work bench I hear the rustling crowd winging through the air in search of wealth I feel them under my feet crawling like serpents only to find money. - All that is not life. I live for the real pleasure of it. When I go to work in the morning, it is to make something. Work gives me an appetite health contentment Once in a while I buy a bouquet for my little one. Then she is .glad. I buy of little girls or poor women in the streets. This makes them glad. So at a outlay I can make two or three persons glad. My home our home, is not large but it it a loved home. The pic tores therein were not costly, but they add to the looks of the place and give us something to look at Friends come to see us. We go to see them, I don't know much about bad places, haunts of tlce
and such, for I never bunted them up. In my way I am living, doing wbat-gooffrcTteepTng' out "of
law and poverty and the poor. house. Every day I learn some thing new. I am atjpeace with all men, and what is better, peace with myself. I tarn off here to go down this street to my home. Good night.' The old man walked his way, proud and happy. He had finished the work given him to do. He had helped a little gill to a sale had secured a flower to take to his borne had well done the work which had been given him to do, intent only on that, with no disposition to quarrel with his fellow. laborers, or to find fault with the tools given him to work with. He was not a preacher but a worker a thinker, a philosopher, certain to find and enjoy his rest when came this, or when comes any other Saturday night. 'Brick Pomeroy. CAUSE FOR REPUBLICAN CON GRATULATION. From the Boaton Advertiser. We congratulate the Republican party of the nation on the outcome of the Cincinnati Convention. We do not mean to intimate that any thing that Convention could have done would have imperiled its triumphs, but there wero names before the Convention which, if they had been presented to the people, would have invited tens of thousands of Republicans to make a choice which what has been done will not tempt them even to take into consideration. The angry refusal to make the nomination of Mr Greeley unanimous was a prompt notification to the New York faction that they had achiev ed a barren and pioCtless victory. senator Roscoe Conkling may well smile with disdainful satisfaction as he reads in tho reports of the proceedings in Cincinati how the vaulting ambition of hi9 adversary has overreached itself. What the Democracy will do in this event remains to be seen. The party will make a ridiculous figure fol lowing the lead ot Mr. Greeley,' but alter its shuffling and coquetry and humiliatinir standing in the market-place, there is nothing for it but a choice of ridiculous figures, but it cannot have an uncom fortable self-respect at this day'. As for the Philadelphia Conven tion, that at Cincinnati his left it without embarrassment and with out anxietv. Improved Soap-Bobbles. Take thrcesquarters of a pint of water that has been boiled and become cold, and put into it a quarter of an ounce of Castile soap, cut up fine. Put this into a pint bottle. and set it in hot water in a saucepan, on the fire; there let it remain an hour or so, now and then giving it a gooa shaking; till the soap is dissolved. Let the fluid stand quiet for the impurities and coloring matter of the soap to settle; then pour off the fluid and add to it four ounces of glycerine, and your soap-blubble solution is ready; In any ordinary way you may blow the bubbles easy with a tobacco pipe, but If you wish to attain scientific perfection, you bad better employ a class pipe . By adding a larger quantity of glycerine, you can made these bubbles so strong that you can play battledoor with them. Potato bugs have appeared at Rising Sun.
