Thus the race terminated for the nomination, in this district. On the 17 th inst. , the Congressionsl Conrention at Cambridge City, will officially make . the announcement of the result, and place Judge wlson on the Ticket as the Republican candidate for Congress. In this almost unanimous endorsement of the Urge and orer whelming msjority of the Republicans of tho district, of our able and efficient membei of Congress, we feel it a sufficient vindication of all the aspersions cast upon him by his personal enemies. ' We think thty were actuated more . by a desire for revenge for fsncied grievances, than with the hope that a stigma would rest upon him through their efforts. The short-comings of human nature need the broad mantle of charity to be thrown over them, in political as well as in social life. THE CITY ELECTION, ' ' There has been no election in this city for yesrs where party lines have been disregarded to the extent they were yesterday. While the -.result is the success of the Democratic ticket, by a majority that according to present indications, will be at least 2,000, it can not be claimed as either a Democratic victory or a Republican defeat. It is rather a rebuke by the Republican partv of those that have assumed to be the party managers.- A very emphatic re
boke it is too. The city is both by nature and tradition strongly Republican. - Under ordinary circumstances ii will give a Republican msjority of at least 2,500. We believe it would have given such a majority yesterday if the Greenwood Hall convention bad manifested any, the least ssgaeity or discrimination . Instead it fool ed away its advantage, and gave the Democrats an oppertonity that to the surpaise of everybody, they improved. Republicans in good standing, whose orthodoxy bss never been suspected or questioned, went to the polls yesterdsy and Indulged in the unfamiliar process of scratching, and in sot a few instances the ticket which was their basis of operations was the Democratic. The weakness of the Repnblican was in its candidates for the Superior Court Thoy were at the head of the list. The names selected for this position should have been strong ones. Had Judge Miner and Walksr been nominated and publio "opinion bad nominated them before the convention had assembled there is little doubt that the success of the ticket would hsve been assured. But the convention; in an ignorance or folly that was nothing but fatuitous. deliberately refused to heed this opinion. It only did not nominste the appointees of Gov. Hayes, but offended the in: teligence and good sense of the community - by nomioatig two men who did not possessthe requisite elements of strength from either a legal or political stand point. We do not propose to be betrayed into a discussion of the merits of the judicial nominees. It was an unpleasant duty to be obliged immediately after their nomination to call upon them to give place to stronger men, and to refer to their lack of qualifications. We need only say that the community in repudiating them, was born on by its zeal to administer snch a rebuke as the party managers will havs occasion to remember, for some time. The nominations of the Democrats were not satisfactory, to the people, but they were stronger , then the Re publican?, and so they were prefered. ' The cause that led to the defeat of the Rapublican ticket was simply and only the disgust arising from the Judicial nominations. Many Republicans staid away from the polls. Many having let down the bars to scratching, entered the field with a thrill of new and strange pleasure. It was not that the Democratic ticket was betterin many cases it was iofeiion but that having determined to rebuke they wanted to forcibly rebuke . It will readily enough be seen that there is no cause for discouragement oid ownbeartedness. The city is as trns to-day to the priu -ciples of the Republican party, as opposed to the assortment of odds and ends that the Democrats call principles, as last year. or year before list On the abstrsct question ot R publicacism, aa against Democracy. . But in a question of local gouerament, party wire pullers must not expect to trade upon the strength of the Republican party and win. The people understand too well the selfishness to put up with the attempt Cincinnati Gsz. April 2.
