SATURDAY. FEB 18, 1871. AXDRKW JACKSOX. A Sketch ky Vftllautlighamr At the 8 lb of January banquet" in Day Ion, Ohio, C. L. Vallandig. listn made a fpiech, in wlmli be poke of Andrew Jackson, as follows : He never poke an impa ticnt wcrtl to wife, seirant,' or cbild ; and voder his own roof approved himself tbe gentlest and tend ere et of Ortn. 'There were two Jackson,' qaaiutly writes a biographer; Jackson rxilit nt, i nd Jbckson triumphant; Jackson crossed, and Jackson having his own way; Jackson, his mastership unquestioned, and Jackson with a rival near the throne.' He had loved his mother living, and all his remaining life revered her dead. He loved children and they loved him; he loved horses; he ought to have loved plants and flowers; he must have loved pets every true hearted man and woman does love them. Before a blazing fire, on a raw and stormy tight in February, with a child on his lap, and a lamb between hia knees, Benion found and announced to him his first hope for milita ,ry position and glory. But foremost among the milder, yet nobler of his characteristics, was bis delicate, chivalrous, absolute faith ia the virtue of women. 'In this,' said one of the earliest and most intimate friends, 'he was distinguishable from every other person with whom I was acquainted.' And, said Benton, 'It was innate, unvarying, self-acting, including all wonankind.' Very rare and very exalted is this faith. Want of it - is tbe begining of immorality. There is no public, and there can not long be any private virtue where it does cot exist. Of every crime against law and every offense against religion and morals he was accused ; and thenceforth to the end of his life, .millions of bis countrymen were taneU to believe him the worst and most infamous of men. They never believed otherwise ; but no matter, they are all dead and for gotten now. The circumstances of his marriage were obtruded upon the public, and the character of his wile, than whom a purer or better woman never lived, was shamelessly assailed. For this most inexplicable of wrongs with Jackson there was no forgiveness. More than twenty years earlier, blood alone bad atoned for it Not calmly, but with stern and wrathful ccurage, Andrew Jackson could do all this. Once only he was moved to tears of grief, and to his wife he said : 'Myself 1 can defend ; you I can defend ; but now they have assail ed even the memory of my mother.' His patriotism was denied, and for his alleged complicity with Burr he was continually dinounced as a tiodtor. But tbis he laugh ed to scorn, and the man and his popularity only gathered strength I from every assault of his enemies The people wee for him, and the I electoral colleges were for bkn. By an overwhelming majority he was chosen President 01 is popularity could stand everything, and, more than that, he could stand his popularity. Ho was now president at last : and eight years of bitterness and strife, and eight years also of glory and honor followed. Never were such political combinations of tal ent, wealth, power, influence form ea againsi any man; never were they so broken. 'I take the re sponsibuity,' said the stern old man of the White House; it was done; the people sustained, time has approved him. Among the more memorable of the events of his administration were the veto of the Maysville road bill; his now historic toast, 'Our federal union it must be preserved,4 f late so often misquoted; the removal of the Indians ; the disruption of bis first cabinet ; the veto of the Uni tea states uanit bill ; bis rupture with Calhoun, and subsequent war with cullificatiou; his re election; the removal of the deposits, the 1 'panic session,' and his heroic firm 4 , ness amid difficulties by which any other man would hare been appall d ; his decided measures with France, which compelled indemni ty and extorted admiration from Wellington and Louis Phillippe; the attempted assassination- by Lawrence, and the Specie Circular. His frailties and virtues alike were called into exercise at every step ; and at the end of eight years of more eventful administration than the country had ever before wit nessed, he retired forever to the seclusion of private life, victor in I every conflict rnd over every foe. Was Aadrew Jackson a rash man? For years he was so regard
ed by enemy and friend alike- But he shall himself answer. Eight years ago an eminent citizen of Tennessee related to me personally that Jackson often complained that hi real character was so little understood. Kven those who ought to know me best,' he was accustomed to say, 'call me rash. But they are wrong, all wrong, sir. I never did a rash thing in my life unless I intend rt iC And no man was more circumspect; none more vigilant or more prudent; no one more silent when it was not wise to speak out ; and none knew better how a secret should be kept. Exacting in his friendships, he more than returned all that he required. Prone to suspect that no enemy could do right, he believed with profoundest conviction to the last moment that no friend could do or intend wrong. At the close of las administration he retired again to the Hemitage, where, in such quietude and seclusion, as is permitted to one so illustrious, he passed the eight re maining years of a long and eventful life.
Journalism In Arkansas is not refined. Here is a 'specimen brick' from one editor's opinion of another's: 'The volcanic, pimple headed, blister brained, owl faced, spiked nosed, weasel eyed, web footed, peg legged, lillipuian, foggy pettifogger of tbe Democrat, does not like our personal appearance, Un til this foul mouthed, brazen debaser has been run through aseive. & filter, scoured, scrubbed, swab bed, sponged and disinfected un til be is a fit object to enter decent society we will forbear having anything to say about him. An important decision has just been rendered in Cincinnati. In a late case it was held that where persons giving local reporters items for publication which prove to be untrue snd libellous, the in former is liable. Tbis will deter many! evil minded persons from using tho papers as a conduit for their venom. Aggrieved persons may bring their actions against the informer, instead of the papers, and thns punish the really guilty - partes. , common sense in There is good that kind of law. Democratic Octlawkt In In diana tbe Democrats exclude a Senator who has bis .credentials because a contest bas been trumped up. - In Hew York tn order to get a majority they withheld tbe returns of a district in that ily which lec ted a Republican, and gave the certificate to a Democrat, admitted him, secured the organization, and propose to eej the legal member out until they pass all their par tisan legislation. Democratic prao tice in cne place is the reverse of the practice in the other, yet in both the same npirit of outlawry prevails; and they violate law and decency to carry their infamous thievery. Ind. Commercial. The Society lor preventing cru elty to animala in New York, has pent over a hundred thousand dollars in pursuing its "mission." So say the reports. N. B. Re port also says -that last Sunday a poor woman, mother of five chil dren, was stopped in the act of out ting her throat, which she attempt ed because she was starving, and bad no food to give her hungry little ones. We don't know that there is any direct connection be tween these two pieces of information ; but have written them dawn together merely to eee how they look ia that way. Gen. .Grant has a dairy farm near SL Louis, with a fine stock ol cows. A choice lot of Alderney and Holstein cattle, of vast milk ing capacities, together with a e lect number or Ayrshire neiiers, are also-on the way to tbe Presi tlential farm, and he will soon have the finest dairy in the country. There is a beautiful girl living near Montreal, who, not withstand ing tbe fact that sbe tisw lost both legs tbove her knee?, has received over a dozen oners of marriage du ring tbe past year, and refused them all. Oue of ber lovers is a member of the Dominion Parlia ment. This afflicted girl speaks seven languages. Capt. Joseph Howard Cromwell, who died at Yellow .Springs, Ohio, a few days ago, was a liaeal de scendant of Oliver Cromwell. He was born iu Maryland eighty -five years ago, and traces his family back through tiie first settlers in this country. He was for 'many years engaged la active business in Cincinnati. A will filed in the San Francisco Probate Court reads : "San Francisco, Jan. 20, 1871. All and any property standing in my name, real and personal, I leave to my wire, Mary Anderson, and likewise ny two daughters, Mary and Jennie. John Anderson.' Tbe two daughter anxiously inquire whether they are a part ot the legacy or sharers in it. A Terdict of one cent damages was awaided in the Court of Com mon Pleas of ' Louisville, in the libel suit of- George Onmacht acainst the Courier Journal Com pany. ' Farmers ia this State have already commenced making maple sugar. "
Pboof Reading. If the readers of the newspapers understood one half of the difficulties in procuring accuracy, instead of wondering and scolding at mistakes, they would be surprised that there are not more. How few readers appreciate the services of the individual who examines the pi oofs of a piper before it is printed. He is one if the most important agents to the production of a cornet literature auJ one of whom no reader seems to think. His is the most thankless of all the cm I03 ments among men. Let him bring out a paper without- a fault for weeks and weeks in succession, and nobody takes note of it ; but let the slightest kind of an error be overlooked, and it is noticed, commented on, and the proof reader then, ard then only, is remembered though unfavorably!
