The Evansvine Courier follows Ul) the cue thus given, and declares that Bishop Simp son gave Grant a Bible because the Bishop had no fut her use lorsucn a book. Democrat hatred of Methodist divines is exceedingly intense, but not altogether unnatural. . Mr. D.Mortimer, M. D., in the last Scientific American, has settled, a .very vexed and vexing question, viz: the exact location of Heaven. He says "there is a vast globe, or world, far within,' from the surrounding i.hotosphere of ... St ethereal fire, which all denominate the sun, which globe in estimated to be at least five hundred thousand miles in diameter." D. Mortimer states that he has brought divine revelation to bear on . this vast central globe, and is plainly tconvinced.'that the globe thus discerned is the Heavenly Empire wherein the righteous from this earth find their fu tare home." Five hundred thousand miles in diameter indicates the' amplest accommodation. .. "'Twenty-two car loads of wheat were whipped from Pendleton last ' week. Since wheat commenced coming in there has been, on an average, twenty-five car loads per week sent away. J The receipts for freight forwarded has during the same time averaged $1,200 per week. We should think Pendleton amounted to something . with the Bellefontaine Railroad Company. Theyr are also," says Galaxy, "like sermons, require ing two heads and an application. "Kisses," said Arabella, who was read ing this item, "are like a celebrated IIol land mania, caused by tu-lips.""--Kisses," said Sprinkles, who' was reading it with her, "are like heaven sweetened ; because because" Sprinkles looked up, faltered and broke down. Apple'Jbllt. Fall pippin apples are decidedly the best for jelly. To one peck of apples, after they are pared and quartered, take three pints of" water and the juice of one lemon, wrth a very little lemon peel, stew until soft then pour into a jelly bag and let drain ; to every pint of juice add one pound of sugar-; set it on tUe fire ; take off any scum,, that rises , let boil twenty or thirty minutes, trying accasionaly with a spoon to see if itj cllied. If ready t put in glasses the syrnp will drop thick. Apr lb Tarts. Stew apples as for sauce, sweeten and add cinnamon and a tablespoonful of bntter while hot, when cold add half teacup of bread crnmbs, and the yolks of four eggs well beaten, with a cup of sweet milk ; bake with under crust ; when done beat the white su gar, add extract to suit taste, beat stiff pour over the tarts, set them in the oven to gain a light brown. "- It is estimated that six millions of baskets of tomatoes will be used for canning this fall by the canning factories of Philadelphia, Camden, Bridge town,' Burlington, Moorestown Vineland and Salem. Can it be possible ? The Newark Advertiser, speaking of the proposed purchase of Cuba, makes the suggestive remark that "the United States does not propose to climb very high for a pear that is sure to drop." Foot races between girls are great attraction at Iowa cattle shows. The girls are said to ruu like wide-wakes to a free lunch. An exhibition at Hamilton, Ohio, was' brought to a sudden-end the other day by the escape of a fifteen-foot snake from its cage. The most agreeable flashes of lightning to be struck by are those that shoot from the eyes of female beauty tho' they have sometimes been the ruin of many a man. . A full third of the people at Lingonier, Indiana, are said to be shaking with the ague. Mast is plentiful on the oak, beceh and other nut trees, about Columbus, Indiana. ' Some of the mines in the neighborhood of Brazil, Indiana, have but one place of entrance, like the mines at Avondale, Pennsylvania. , Ben Butler's brother, who was said to have made so much money out of the war, through the connivance of the General, proves to have left no property." His estate is insolvent. . ' A raptured writer, inquires: "What is. there under heaven more humanizing, or, if we may use the term, more angelizing, than a fine black eye in a lovely woman?" Two black eyes is the only 'answer thought of at present.

MoullgbUtl, Sl'CTVlBl IU LUC? A. una delphia Pkess says there is little doubt that the next Congress will enact a law that will do something to check the appalling frequency of accidents on railroads. The last month has been a carnival of catastrophes, and the subject is

one that demands a thorough investiga tion and a thorough remedy.
