For the Palladium. Mb." Editor. In your last number is an article written by Caleb W King, in which - he says his name ha9 been used very conspicuously, etc. It is said by a writer that brevity is the soul of wit. Not claiming to be witty or wise, I will be brief. In the first place he says I charge fraud on himself or the Commissioners, although he thinks it unworthy of notice. And, then be says he will give the facts of the case, and in doing so he forgets to say he saw the article before to the editor and made no ob jeclion to it. . .V. Kcsskll. OLD DON Once upon a time, a horse hearing a strange, sad cry in the stable pricked up his ears pawed a little meditatively, twiched at his slender halter, and then refreshed himself with another bite of delicious provender. r - Another cry.then a low grieved moan; the faithful creatnro could wait no long er. Snapping by a sudden jerk the slight cord about his neck, he moved carefully, now here, now there pokeihg his cold nose into odd corners and byplaces, stopping now and then to listen, I suppose, until he found a little creature so small that the weight of his foot could have crushed it what do you think he did ? whj', he took hold of its ragged garments, and lifting it with his strong teeth, put in a stall filled, with soft hay, the very next to his own pantry. There was no partition between, so while he refreshed himself with, his delicate night lunch, he could also, you see, have an eye to the new comer, the wee bit baby girl." "But mother, how did anybody know that he put the Laby in the mainger?" That was easily seen, for a part of the baby's ragged dress was found on the floor.trodden on by a heavy foot belong ing to her preserver, and a shred of the calico, faded and soiled, was in the mornin'g taken by his proud master from between hi3 big teeth ; tha'd the way, Gu', that the story came out, and pretty strong evidence it was. The baby must have been very restless ; and the guardian, discouraged, no doubt, by his inability to quiet it, began to think what could be doue next. It was a little after midnight, Mrs. Elvy said.that she heard ft strange noise at the bedroom window, a sort of plain tive whinny, that seemed to her, half awake, like the sighing of the trees before a storm ; so she turned again to slumber. But Don, getting impatient, and worrying about the cr,ing baby, presently made a desperate effeort to awaken his master by a loud shirll neigh, j It had for a long time been a fashion ; of hi3 to do this when he demanded any special attention ; he had been great ly petted by the family, and little Fred, when skk in the summer, had been allowed to feed him from this very window. "Lunchbell" was a farniller s-und to his cars. If in the medow enjoying a substantial meal, juicy and dew laden and the merry jingling from Master Fred's hand was heard, io, the wise and discreet charger was immediately seen trotting towards the house ; a leap over the bars, an intelligent poke at the big gate, and in a jiffy the lively nag was resting his long glossy head on the win dow sill, the great brown eyes entreating that attention due to invited guests. Then Fred would feed him with dainties, and of ten, while the boy's slender fingers caressed the glossy inane and supple cars, the mammoth pet fell into pleasant slumber. Don knew what it was to be in genteeljsociety, he appreciated kindness, and knew where friends were to be found ; so, when the baby in the stall moaned with cold, hunger,nd a great need to be "cuddled up" by motherly arms, Don, graduly comprehending the situation, concluded to arouse the family. . A low side tioor, always left lightly fastened-'or Don, had sentimentally nib bled and meditated by moonlight made the way easy ; so putting this and that together, the big brave heart jnst sholdered the rcsponcibility of the desolate baby, and as I s-id, made known at the familiar ' window the urgency:;of the case." - Mrs. Elvy, somewhat out of patience at bein,r awakeneu in tuis unccremoniousfashion, said rather testily, "Don do you go to your manger. No lunch bell rang, and your lit'Ie master is in bed," - But Don, not discom fitted, bravely held his ground.alternately neighing and turning hia head towards the barn, unsuspicious if the good house-mother were arousea.ana waKeniDguer uusuana she begged him to examine the premises and see what the matter was. . ; And so he found the baby mother?"' Yes, eo he found her, sure enough ; poor little creature, it was shivering n.nd moaninsr. and was so tender that un less a rescuing hand had prevented, it must have died before morning, wnen Don saw his master, lantern in hand he joyfully led the way, kicking up his heels as if wild with delight ; he trotted to the side door, turning his head every minute or two to see if he was undergtood ; then bound over the tereshold, l.m riPfl to the stall, poking hia cold nose down into the hay, to see if the small guest was still there ; when he caw it safelv in his masters arms, and was him self patted and praised, he set tled down to his oat3, contented ana i.nrtnv witir a 'Don't thank me, I've on ly done my duty, sir,' both touching and ludicrous. Nobody ever claimed the child, ana war such a little sunbeam that Fred
said her Dime must be Joy.- There
grew up a wonderful affection between "Joy" and "Don ;" he seemed never to forget that she must have tender nursing and when the was old enough to toddle about.iustalled himself her protector inchief, and no guardian, be she maid or mother, was ever more faithful to duty. When she tumbled about on the grass, he stepped lightly, lifting his great cum broua feet in a most considerate way. Once an ugly dog frightened little 'Joy' sadly. For a few minuets Don protected her as well ns he coidd ; then seeming to feel the need of such guardianship, lifted her carefully by her dress as he did, no doubt, when he placed her in the manger-and greatly alarmed Nora, who sat sewing by the kitchen window, 13 dropping Mi33 Joy directly into her lap, looking the anxiety he could not speak. "Aunt Joy ! Oh, mother, was it her ? Now I understand about the pictures she had fiamed so beautifully on Christ mas, and the brown wactchguard she wears, with 'Don marked on it. I should like to have built him a splendid stable, and had everything elegant for him, but then people never do such things for horses when they do great deeds." Not often, Guy ;but I can tell you of one person who showed great attention to a favorite horse, but I do not remember that it was for any thing the creature had done. Caligu a, a Roman Emperor who lived about 37 A. D , a very cruel man, had a horse which he greatly petted ; and, while he thought nothing of sentencing to a horrid death scores of aged and infirm men and woman, he paid this horse all the attention one would bestow upon a beloved friend. For this pet, named Incitatus, he claimed greater respect and reverence than is accorded to the wisest mortals. lie built him a stable of marble, and a manger of ivory, and some where I have read that he was fed with golden oats and drank from a gold en cup. He also appointed for Incitatus a house, furniture, and a kitchen, in older to a respectful entertainment of it j visitors. He frequently invited his four-footed friends to the imperial table, and entertained serious thought of conferring upon animals the honors of the consulship. What a silly fellow, if he was an Emperor !! said Guy with a republican curl of tne lip. 'I think 'Don' was far more worthy of respct thanlncitatus or its horrid master ! And so do we all, Master Guy.
The Columbus Statesman claims support for Mr. Pendleton because his wife was the daughter of the man who wrote the "Star Spangled Banner." Whereupon the Cleveland Herald maliciously retorts: "If Mr3. Pendleton's husband had done more to uphold the 'Star Spangled Banner' against it3 rebel foes it would have been more to the purpose." A feature of the annual war dance of the Indians on the Upper Missouri is thus described : 'During the dance, incisions are made in the skins of the male Indians. Buffalo thongs or strings are run through these incisions and some heavy objects, generally the heads of buffaloes, are attached. The Indian who pulls the weight the jrtatest distance and at the fa3te3t speed gains the honor, and is made famous according to his degree of fortitude. SUDDEN DEATH. A singular and cad occurence took place at the village of Troy, in Whitley county, last Sunday. Rev. Mr. Harker, of Larwell, formcly of Eafayette, was preaching in the Presbyterian Church, on the "Death of Man." He had got about half through his sermon, when he suddenlj' stopped and told the congregation that be felt a kind of ehoaking sensation, and must rest a few minutes. He commenced gasping immediately, and, though every attention was shown him, he died in a very short time. It is supposed that apoplexy caused his death A Good Story. And it is as true as it i3 good is told of an old farmer named Stinson, who lives about twelve miles from Danville, Illinois. The old man never read a newspaper, or anything else but his Bible, and consequent ly had heard nothing of the. eclipse. When the sun began to be obscured, and the darkness to gather, he was frightend half out of his wits, and ran to the house of a neighbor, begging him to pray for his wife and children for him. lie was never known to do any thing of the sort himself. "I don't care for myself," said he, "but pray for the old woman and tho children." The report of Samuel M. Janncy, Northern Superintendent of Indian Affairs, on the situation in his distiict, contains one sentence that may possibli deter young gentlemen, anxious to make matrimonial engagements, from emigrating to the Territories for that purpose. Mr. Janney sorrowfully re cords : 'I have not yet scon a handsome Indian woman.' From which it would seem that the distinguished and worthy Friend had actually believed in that very pretty romance about Pocahontas Bonds. The financial editor of the Puiladelphia Ledger has been asked to explain why it is that the two issues of 5 20s of 18G5 bring different prices in tho market? He replies as follows: One reason i3, that what is called the old issue of 18G5 have their semi annual interest periods in May and November, while the new 5 20s have their interest periods January and July. At the present time the old issue carry interest from 1st of May, equal to SI gold more than the new, which carry interest only from July 1. Another reason i3, that the old 18653 have a foreign market the new have not. Eyre fc Landell, Fourth and Arch, Philadelphia.
