We do not see how anybody can disbelieve in a Special Providence. Here, for example, just as Mr. Johnson has retired to private life, there has been discovered near Nashville one of the most curious and commodius caverns in the country 'It is deep and extensive,' says the telegram. It is evident to us that this great cave has been hidden from the eyeTof mankind, and expresslj' reserved for the use, benefit, and behoof of Mr. Johnson, that he may retire to it, the world forgetting,' by the 'world forgot,' for the e purpose of reflection, repentance, self mortification both of the flesh and the spirit, and all other occupations in which it is proper for a firstclass hermit to engage. We confidently expect soon to hear that he has moved in, and established himself as an anchorite, with a couch of straw and a dieof roots and water. f N. Y. Tribune. i Origin of the Printer's Devil. When Aldus Manutius set up in business as printer at Venice, he came in possession of a little negro boy. This boy, was known over the city as 'the little black' devil' who assisted the myster ioua biblofactor, and Bome of the ignorant persons believed him to be none other, than the embodiment of Satan, who halped Aldus in the prosecution of his profession. One day Manutius, desiring to ' dispel this fltrange hallucination by publicity, displayed his imp to - the poorer classes. Upon this occasion he made this ebort but characteristic speech ''Be it known to Venice, that I, Aldus Manutius, printer to ' the Holy Church" and Doge, have this day made public exposure of ; the printer's devil. All those who think he is not flesh and -blood may come and pinch him.' Henry Ward IJeecher said, in his free trade speech, in Brooklyn, that his great-great grandfather was a blacksmith, his great-grandfather a saddler, his grandfather also a saddler, and his father was a farmer till it was discovered that be was not fit for that occupa tion, and then tbey made a minister of him. Aa act to . amend . an act regulating .general elections and prescribing the 'duties of officers in relation thereto, ap proved June 7, 1852; and to amend an act entitled an act to provide for township elections, approved June 15, 1852; and to fill vacancies in office occasioned by the provisions of this act and to repeal all laws inconsistant therewith, and declaring an emergency. F : Section 1. Be it enacted by the Genet al Assembly of the State of Indiana, that section first entitled an act regulating elcetions and prescribing the duties of officers in relation thereto, approved June 7, 1852, which reads as fol lows, to-wit: 'A general election shall be held annually, on the second Tuesday in October, at which all existing vacancies in office, and all offices the term3 of which will expire before the next genernl election thereafter, shall be filled, unless otherwise provided by law; provided, tho first election for members in Congress shall, take place at the general election in October, 1852, and every second year thereafter be and the same is hereby amended to read as follows, to wit: A general election shall be held biennially.on the second Tuesday in October at which election all existing vacancies in office, and all offices the terms of which will expire before the next general election thereafter, shall bo filled, unless otherwise provided by law; provided, the first election under this act shall take place on the second Tuesday in October, 18 10, and every second year thereafter. . Section 2. That the first election of an act entitled an act to provide for township elections, approved June 15, 1855, which reads as follows, to wit: j That there shall be held an election in each township, at the usual place of holding elections, on the first Monday in April in each year, for the purpose of electing township officers and such other officers as may be provided for by law, which election shall be conducted by. the officers of, and be governed by laws regulating general elections, so far as the same are applicable be and the seme is hereby amended to read as follows, to-wit: . That there shall be held an election in each township, at the usual places of holding elections, on the same day provided in this act, for holding general elections for the purpose of electing township officers and such other offices as may be provided for by law, which election shall be conducted by the officers of, and governed by the laws regulating general elections, so far as ' the same may be applicable. Section 3. That all vacancies created by the provisions of this act, in any office in this state, shall be filled 33 now provided by law. Section 4. All laws and parts of laws inconsistant with the provisions of this act, are hereby repealed. Section 5. This work,which has been thirty-eight years in progress of publication, is said to depict faithfully the social life of Japan in all grades and in every quarter of the empire. One of the best sort of minds is that which minds its own business. Like many other extra good things, including beef steak, it is somewhat rare. So much discussion has been excited by the suggested alteration of the musical pitch, that a new organ we mean a paper-will be established to afford field for the debate. It is to be called the The Musical Pitch-in. Two darkies of Augusta, Georgia, went out to fight a duel the other day, but when they were shaking pistols in their hands, a shrewd old negro, after examining the challenge and acceptance called a halt, remarking, 'Dera dar papers ain't fix up 'cording to de "code, and dis foolishness is 'bout to git some nigger in jail,' whereupon the belliger ents ejaculated, each to his second, 'Tank de Lord!' and went home. An old farmer in Ohio, having read that the State penitentiary cleared seven thousand dollars during the last year by the labor of the convicts, sat some time in deep thought, and then exclaimed 'I think we'd better turn our legislatur into a penitentiary, by jingo!' 'An exchange says that a farmer Cured his daughter of the Grecian bend by throwing water on her, and then laying her in the sun till she 'warped' straight again." '" - - A person of experience crystalizes the wisdom he can acquire in that way in the following sentence:" 'Courtship is bliss, but matrimony is blister.' The Popclotjsness of China. What impresses a traveler in China is the number of people. The land seems filled with men, women and children. An intelligent Cantonese once expressed his idea of the fact to an Englishman in the following forcible but not complimenta. ry way: 'You are few and we are many.
