vi. RICHMOND, IND., JAN. 19th, 1869. Items from the Hearth and Home. M.LU.MS or,CoBN Husks. In this country the chief industrial use of corn husks is to stuff matrasses. Sometimes for this purpose they - are torn into shreds by hand with a hetchel, but for large manufactories they are prepared by machinery indented for the purpose- - The Germans are far ahead of the Yankees in u tilizing this material. , By means of processes invented in Austria some five or six years ago about 20 per cent, of the weight of corn-husks, may be made into stoutr'paper, twenty-five per cent, may be brought into a fibrous condition and woven into cloth, and fifteen per cent may be separated as a kind of starchy substance, rhich has been made into biscuit for the soldiers in the , Austrian army. Best sugar in the Wkst. A sugar making company in LiviDgston county, Illinois, uses about fifty tons of beets per day in the manufacture of the saccharine Rtar lo. The production of this kind of sugar is now very great in many parts of Europe and is being rapidly develop cd in this country. It is but little more than half a century ago that Napoleon bestowed a reward upon the man who mado the first sample of any account. This sample is said to have been a little black mass of strong sugar, weighing a bout two pounds Comparative Richness or Milk.- It . id stated that the last half pint of milk Araxtrn frnm . enw's nid(-r lifts sixteen ' times the quantity of creamy in it than the first one. This is one reason why the cow milking machines are not more extensively approved.' i Although they may milk very fast they do not "strip clean, and farmers cannot afford to lose the last half pint of milk from each cow twice a day. " ''-' -" ' - '' ' - ! . ." . ' , - f ' . j Rock Salt. Many persons suppose that rock-salt Is dug out of the mines in substantially the same condition that it is put into the market- but this is not so. The masses of salt are broken up and dissolved in water." The solution is then evaporated and the salt removed as it crystallizes. By this means, the impurities, consisting, for the most part, of or. ide of iron and the various earths, are removed, and the salt is rendered fit for use. The greatest salt mine in the world i f. ihrnnnnr. in Poland, where the im pure salt is taken out in huge blocks, broken from its place in the mine by the use of of wedges and sledge-hammers. ' . Nbw Kind . of Sorghum. 'A farmer down in Connecticut claims to have discovered a new kind of sorghum that will produce ten Barrels or syrup ana sixiy bushels of seed to the acre. Very doubt ful. When seeds ripen, the stalks of all' plants grow woody and dry, and why should sorgho cane be an exception? Suar can be made from corn stalks if they are cut green, put the case is quite different when the corn ears are ripe. , . Ah it Should Be. In one of the irl's schools at Rochester, there is a teacher i f gardening. The Iowa Agricultural College takes young ladies, and there is to be a Professorship of Theory anil Practice of Butter-mading. Roman Cement. The Ohio Farmer says: "After making common mortar, add one of fine unslacked lime, mix, and use at once. This is said to be the Roman cement which resists water, and becomes hard as iron." This, although a very good cement, is not the Bom an cement so called, but is a material re cently brought forward as the produc tion af a German, r The true Roman ce ment owes its efficacy to about twenty per cod t. of alumina which it contains. An artificial substitute for this is sometimes made by mixing with the lime about the same proportion of calcined clav. How to Split Rocks. Farmers and others, who have occasion to remove boulders from their fields, may break them up into fragments as folio ws Drill a deep hole in the rock, at the proper point, and then lit into the lower portion of the hole a cylindrical ingot of lead of corresponding diameter. Then drive a mandrel, or rod, down upon the lead by' repeated 'blows of a hammer. The lead will be expanded laterally, and, being inelastic, the pressure will accumulate, and after a while rupture the jock. . This method has none of the danger attendant upon the use of gunpowder. ' - ! Gltcebine Glycerine is the sweet, sirupy substance obtained by subjecting lard and tnllow to the action of super heated steam, or, in other words, of steam heated in a tight vessel to a high temperature. The steam causes the fatty acids to separate from the glycerine. This last,' ' besides being used in the manufacture of nitroglycerine, which is as poisonous as it is explosive, ma be aDDlied to many valuable purposes. Some of these are very simple, and ap parently trivial, but still worth knowing; for instance, glycerine is one of the best remedies for chapped hands and crack ed lips. It is also, when diluted with . water, a suitable dressing'for the hair, being something like the "bandoline" made from a solution of Iceland moss, '. and of tetkjuscd for keeping the hair in nlace. Glycerine will also soothe the ' bites'of the musquito, and the sting of bees ana wasps. . , ?
