RICHMOND, IND., JAN. 12th, 1869. A corroepondent of the Cincinnati Commercial, writing from Washington, thus alludes to the recent eulogies on the Hon. Thed. - Stevens, and photographs Secretary Seward: TH X.ATB THAD. 8TBVKNS; The Cave of the Winds has for hours been blowing a solemn dirge over the d emise of Old - Sarcastic, - commonly called the Old Man Eloquent, or the Great Commoner.' 'I suppose ray friend Mungen might be styled the great tincommoner. What the' old scratch makes people indulge in tins sort .of stuff bothers me. The old . man eloquent is a quotation from Milton, and when first applied to " John Quincy Adams was well enough, but it is not applicable to tao late Tbaddeus. He was seldom if ever eloquent. He was sarcastic and bitter, and could make the i ur fly when so disposed, but to please, penetrate and persuado, that was no' his forte. He was a grand old man in his way, but one would never find it out from the flood of sickening eulogy that rolled out to day. Good Lord, when will we have done with these windy platitudes. How old Thad. would have grinned had be been present, and , how he would have collapsed the pots of hon ey with a few words of sarcasm edging the lump of truth. How a little truth about the old man would have startled the House. Had his daily and nightly life been photographed for a moment, how each member would have started i as if a slander was being newly prom , ulgated. And yet each mother's son of jj them all knew the story .of his life j And so we make history. 'And in such j history we lose the lesson and belittle the actor. Take these eulogies and make up from them, if 3'ou can, the real life of Thad. Stevens as he hobbled in to the House from a night of cards; and hoar after honr frightened and coaxed, and bullied and controlled the members and controlled them along tue pain oi humanity. His acts were grand, but his ordinary life was not grand, nor even good. : And yet, taking it all in ail, it was human, and when we see what he did, it is well to know, for his credit that to accomplish the good he had to swing out from much that was bad in his own nature. When will these people learn, that while wc sympathise with, and even love defective humanity, wo can not comprehend, nor admire, and far less love the gods of their poor crea tion. Poor old Thad he left a vacancy in ,. the House of Representatives that can j not well be filled. j "Who will carry me, boys," he said, with his grim smiles, to the men who brought him to the Capitol for the last time, ou their shoulders; "who will car rv me when you are dead?" The grass is not yet green above his I grave, ana we are iorgeuing mm in ms high wrought eulogies. gKWARD. I saw this venerable diplomat the other day for the first time in nearly four years. He is not much changed, and I wondered as I gazed at him standing under the portico of the Executive Man sion in waiting for his carriage, how this thin shape of humanity had survived f the wear and tear of the late past. Perhaps his winter wraps gave him an unsubstantial appearance. The woun is left by the assassin have nearly disappeared, and his hatchet like face, with t'to retreating chin and aquiline nose, with his eternal cigar, were before me, as if no great war had been fought, no diplomatic complication solved, no assassins ever existed. His other, and until now, stronger half, Thurlow Weed, is dying of softening of the brain. The weaker half lives on, humming a tune between puffs and snapping his lingers aa thinking, "A fig for this scurvy world." I believo at bottom old Seward is a kind hearted, well disposed man. And with a greedy ambition to be considered brilliant, he has been false to his pat record and to his country, and false to himself. Daring ft season of great religious coolness, one of the deacons was asked whether the church to which he belonged were nnited. Ah, yes," replied the good man, with emotion, " for we are all frozen together." A. transcendental preacher took for his text, "Feed my lambs.'' A plain far mer very quaintly remarked to him on a ... coming ous oi me cnurcn: "A very good text, air; but yon should take care . not to pnt the hay so high in the rack that the lambs can't reach it!" A Connecticut editor fell on an icy sidewalk last week. He did not use 'unparliamentary language," as some would have done, but bit his lips, rub bed down the braises, and while a ben evolent smile radiated his countenance, remarked: "We don't cherish any ill will: bat for light and entertaining read ing matter,' recommend to us the obitu ary of the man who, owns this sidewalk." Twenty-seven thousand cigars and a lai-ire Quantity of wine! were seized at Baltimoreon Christmas, for violation of the rerettoa law.
