Uncertainties of the Law, The Troy New York Whig tells a sto ry of a case at law in that State.' In 1855. a man was run over on the Hudson River railroad, and his wife sued the Company for damages. Tbe .case was firstrtried before a justice and the plaintiff nonsuit ed. She then appealed to the Supreme Court and the nonsuit was taken off. She then tried the case before another just ice and got 82.500 . damages. f . The Railroad Company appealed thia tim, and the fourth trial was had, in "the Supl Court Iha verdict of 2500 being alHrmed. , The Railroad Company again " appealed, and. the "fifth trial ,was had before the , New York Court of Appeals, which . reversed the-, former decisions and' ordered a new trial before a justice.; This gave rise to tho sixth trial, which ame off before another justice, who nonsuited the plain-; tiff. " She again appealed,, and. the, 'sevV cnth. trial took place before the Supreme Court which thi3 time affirmed the non suit, but tho lady again appealed to the highest Court, And the eighth trial was Lad before the Court of Appeals in April last. This Court reversed all the former decisions and sent'the case down to the justice tto begin over again. ; Thus after eleven years contest in the courts and eight trials the case is back where it started in the justice's Court ; in ,1855. The ways of the law are tortuous indeed, especially where a poor woman attempts to tight a big railtoad corporation. Dear Brbthkex:' According to custom for many ypars past, your attention has been directed by our Circular Letters to very important anl interesting subifcts. Permit us in this to call your attention to ihe Cliristian anl the hypocrite, whilst we attempt to show in a few particulars the difference between them. . , , By a Christian,! we. untleratand one who ha3 the mind of Christ, and is a follower of him; bv a hypocrite, one who pretends to true religion without its possession. In the Scriptures, there are certain marks delineated by which we may test ourselves and know whether we be a true Christian or a hypocrite, that we may concisely present you with a delineation- of these marks, and show in whom they are found and in whom they are not found, we shall confine ourselves to the consideration of the three prominent graces which are exercised by those who are born of God: these are Faith, Hope and Charity, the two first are confined in their exercise to the existence of Christians on this earth, the last is the exercise of the child of God here, and throughout an eternity of- happiness. Faith is the evidence of things not' seen,' and substance of things hoped for; this grace , is therefore one that gives present reality to that which is not visible to our natural eyes; we see not Christ, but believing in him, we are as .certain of His existence as ifwet beheld Him with our own eyes; awakened to a sense of our own guilt and danger, as ; transgressors of God's laws, we leel that, we; deserve eternal punishment; led--' by .-the spirit, by whose influence we are awakened
to believe in Christ as a' Saviour, "we feel
joyful m tne nope oi wternai nappiness in uis presence. , an una iaiiu, we nave the reality of Christ's existence and power to save, as if we saw Htm, and were delivered by Him from some bodily. danger. , This'.faith is exercised in the whole word of God, as written in the Bible; for having felt peace and joy in believing in Christ, who is revealed in the: Bible, by natural consequences we believe all the rest that is contained therein. "This faith enables its possessor to overcome the world, and to trust in God under the most gloomy circumstances; for having found Christ able to deliver him in his greatest extremity; he trusts to Him in others.?;; Hope is a sister grace to Faith it consists of desire and expectation. He that in Christ, desires to be with Him, that he may see Him as He is, and upon the evidence, which his faith enables him to receive, he expects with firm' confidence the enjoyment" of that blessed sight, as faith has respect to the whole word of God.i s Hope, especially, has respect to the promises of God. : These all assure the believer that he shall be delivered from all his afflictions on
this earth from all his trials, and finally , from this body oi sin and death;1 that he shall, triumph oyer the powers of darkness and the grave; that his body shall be raised on the last day, and fashioned like to Christ's glorious body," and there; he shall be with -tlie "Lord, to behold His glory; all this he hopes, for, on promises of God. .This is as an anchor to his soul, both sure and steadfast; entering into that within the vale, whither Jesus, the forerunner, has gone before him. Now the" use of an anchor is to preserve the vessel from being earried adrift; the anchor being thrown out upon some snre ground and confined to the vessel, answers ,this purpose in spirit of the figure; then it may be said that hope fixed on the Lord Jesus Christ sustains the soul and preserves it, for the promises of God are in Christ Jesus, yea and amen, to the Glory of God." The Christian's hope is in jGpd,"hencejthe psalmist, in an hour of gloom and distress," said to his disponding soul; ...hope" tho a, in God, for I shall praise him.- i . - Charity is--the third I prominent-grace of the true Christian. The proper meaning of charity is love to God supremely, and to our neighbors in the same measure that we exercise it toward ourselves in our unregenerate state our carnal mind is fenmity against God; not' subject to His law, and incapable of becoming so in our own strength, but the Christian experiences a change in which he receives a heart to love God.. . The love of God is shed abroad in the Chris
tian's heart bv the Holy Ghost. l ove,
to express in suitable, acts of obedience; hence he obeys from the heart, that
form of doctrine which is delivered to hooeth. all . things, believeth all things,
seemly; thus have we given you a concise view of the prominent graces of the Christian, whose exercises mark him to be a child of God. Now let us see how far these exercises are found in the hypocrite: and, first, his faith is only in
the head, having nothing -of the warm
vk ChrujC TS'itC restijoji the good opinion he has of Ihiniself, and that ha thinks others have of him. If he can maintain his standing in the church and among men. he thinks well of his "prospects for' Heaven; his faith overlooks the search-
i ing portions of God's word, and fastens r his imperfections and sins distress him,
' tentions and some charitable actions which he perforins, and which he thinks pos-
; scsses merits enough to owlance the account, much5 in hU favor. His hope is languid and dull; when he speaks of it, it is cold Indifference he professes to
' hope in God; but his hope isreally in rather as a "weighty load to drag him professes to wait with desire for the
fer a long inheritance on earth, on selush principles. -He hopes to go to Heaven,' because he t Links it a place of happiness; but he would be willing to abide .t. a AHAMa aaAf Ail tt A AMIAtT WOnHlt' Vl AllAr Otirl t OOSI1 S If f)l 14
the hone of the hypocrite, which must
for, where the treasure is, there the heart will be also., He thinks that he loves God, but it is only because he thinks God is his friend; not because he sees He is IovpIv beiucr. He does not admire and adore Him -'for His holiness, justice,
truth and faithfulness, t He does not
he promotes his own good. : The hypocrite deceives himself, and attempts to deceivA his God. -He would not then be restrained frdm deceiving hi9 neigh
bor.' it ha conld' succeed "without thono-hts. desires and pursuits. Such hrnnnrito Hia faith, is vain his hone i is as cold aa ice and. at tbe last, his of a vision.' and leave no trace behind,
