altodfam. M M RlCrlWOfiO, ?, IND. . APRIL. 16., 1868. 1 HRUMKI.. MISHAP. Although Brunei die dat the comparatively early ag of fifty-three, it is even matter of surprise that he lived so long, lie had more perilous escapes from violent death than fall to the lot of most men. 'We have eecn that al; the""outset of his career, when ; acting as assistant engineer to his father, in. the, Thames Tunnel, he had two" "narrow escapes from drowning" tjt She river suddenly bursting. in upon the. works. Some time after, when inspecting the shafts of the railway tnnnel; onder .Box-. Hill, he was one day riding a shaggy pony at a rapid pace "down 'the hill, when the animal stumbled and fell, pitching the engineer on his head with great violence he was taken up for dead, but eventually recovered. When (he Great Western line was finished and at work, be used to frequently - ride vpon the engine with the driver, and occasionally he drove it himself. One day, when passing through, the .Box Tunnel upon the engine at considerable speed, Brunei thought he discerned between him and the light some object -'standing on the same line of road along which his engine was traveling. He instantly turned on the full steam and dashed at .the object, which was driven into a thousand peiccs. Xjt afterward turned out ta be a contractor's truck, which bad broken loose from a ballast train on its way through the - tunnel. " Another narrow escape which he had was on board the Great Western steamship, where he fell down a hatchway into the hold and ras nearly killed. But the most extraordinary accident which befell him was that which occurred while one da)' playing ' with his children. Like his father, Sir Marc, he was fond of astonishing them with sleight-of-hand tricks, in which he . showed considerable dexterity; and the feat which he proposed to them on this occasion was the passing of a half-sovereign through Lis mouth out at his ear. Unfortunately he swallowed the coin, which dropped into his wind pipe. The accident occurred on the 3d of April, 1843, and it was followed by frequent fits of cough ing, and occasional uneasiness in the right side of the chest; but so slight was the disturbance of breathing that it was for some time doubted whether the coin had realy fallen into the wind-pipe. .After the -lapse of fifteen days, Sir B. Brodie met Mr. Key in , consultation, and they concurred in the opinion that most probably the half-sovereign was bimself in a prone position on his face upon some chairs, and bending his head and neck downward, be distinctly felt the coin drop towards the glottis. A violent eough ensued, and on resuming the erect posture he felt as if the object again moved down into the chest Here was an engineering- difficulty the like of which had never been seen before by Mr. Brunei. The mischief was purely mechanical; a foreign body had gone into his breathing apparatus and must be removed, if at all, by some mechanical expedient. Mr. Brunei; was, however, equal to the occasion. He had an apparatus constructed,' consisting of a platform which moved upon a hinge in the centre." Upon this he had himself strapped, and his body was then inverted, in order that the coin might drop downward by its own weight, and so be expelled. At the first experiment the coin again slipped towards the glottis, but it caused such an alarming fit of convulsive oooghing and appearance of choking that danger was apprehended, and the experiment was discontinued. Two days after, on the 25th, the operation of tracheotomy was performed by Sir Benjamin Brodie, assisted by Mr Key with the intention of extracting the coin by forceps, if possible. Two attempts to do so were made without success. The introduction of the forceps into the windpipe, on the second occasion, waa attended with so excessive a degree of irritation that it was felt the experiment could not be continued without imminent -danger to life. The incision in the windpipe was, however, kept open by means of a quill or tube, unil May IStk, by, which time Mr. Brunei's strength had-anflciently recovered to enable . the original experiment to be repeated. ; He wae again strapped to his apparatus; his body was inverted; his back waa struck 'gently, and he distinctly felt the ooia quit its place on the right side of bis ehest The opening in the, windpipe allowed him to breathe while the . throat was stopped by the j coin, and it thas had the effect to prevent the spasmodic action of the glottis, ! After a few coughs the coin dropped into his month". Mr. Brunei nsed afterwards to say that the moment when ae heard the gold piece strike against his upper front teeth, was perhaps the most xqfttftlto .'his whole Kfe The halfovertign had been inhiawindpipe for not leu than six weeks! fAn anotteneeT in; Nashville. The following is from the last Baldwin city "Visitor ;:;.A. ... -ki J Mr. J. II. Dearing, living about one mile south of Black Jack, while chopping on his farm recently, was thown fifteen feet In the air and got safely lodged in the top of a tree. . He had got his tree cut on,. and waa setting on the butt of another one ; laying: near by, while another man completed the chopping. The tree fell striking the one on which Mr. Dearing waa seated, throwing the bott op with a sudden spring, sending Mr. D. skyward in a manner which he bad not bargained for While -in that "elevated position, the , thought flashed into his mind that if he fell straight down , he .would , strike the stump,' which would probably 'kill him, and he caught bold of ' the branches of a tree within his reach, from " which be descended unharmed at his leisure. ,
A Good Joke. At the recent municipal election in Memphis, Tennessee, the Republicans came on victorious by a handsome majority. This result was perfectly amazing to the "conservatives' of the city, who had confidently counted on carrying everything by storm. The reason why "this is thus," as Artemus Ward nsed to say has come to light. It appears that there are about five thousand colored r voters in the city, most of whom depend upon the "conservative" leaders for employment. These employers, as usual, threatened every laborer with discharge who should vote the Republican ticket; bat to make assurance doubly sure" (as they thought) they supplied the negroes with whiskey, and in many cases with greenbacks. The tanglefoot was swallowed with smiles, and the greenbacks pocketed without a nod of dissent; but lo! upon election day the "brutal blacks" went to the polls four thousand three hundred strong and deposited straight Republican ballots! Only one hundred negroes voted the conservative ticket, "and those one hundred cost us five thousand dollars," says the Avalanche. Perhaps Sambo hasn't any gumption, but he certainly succeeded in "hoisting" the Memphis conservatives with a very sharp trick. :'UJ , Jt"Liat of Patents issued to Indiana Inventors for the week ending March 24, 1868, furnished by Messrs.
