Sir : The tcner uv offli3 act docs not sheeld yoo from removal." Wood it not be well for yoo to declare yoor 'preference for thePresidency ? It ia my opinion that President Johnson cood lie inrfoost to accept the nominashun. ,w-rA;'W. Randal, P. M. G. Hand. - This note, kiverin a threat, put me into a perspirasuun. v ay, Diess me t President's cheerful sole, uv course I km express my preference for tne 1'res idency. Certinly I kin, I "bleeve in A Johnson. He is my fust and only choice and will be for fifteen months to come without fail. I cannot say very much tor him, but I km abuse his competitors, and that, nossiblv. amounts to the same thine. The follerin is a note I shel send to the President for insershen in his organ: En. NitHMii. K'temocker : is, The question which just now agitates the mind uv Kentucky more, perhaps, than any thing else, is : who shel be the nominee uv the next JNashnel Uimocrat ie Convcnshun ? There are manv sen ttlemen spoken uv in connecshun with the place, and ther claims I perpose, breeiiy, ' to consider from a Kentucky stand-pint. Th firak ia fieri, fln. R. McClellan. whose body has been recently raised for . m mr 1 ( A. T tue purpose, uen. jucuieiian is not, x . don t think, objecshunable to toe oouiiinrn riAnrtlo Thnv hpv a. nateral and normal objecshun to any one who drawd tne swora agin em in tne late onpieasantnis, but they do not bleeve that Gen. G. B. did this. At least ef he did, it wuz only figerative. - His servises to the Confedracy in buryin the tens uv thousands uv Fedral sojers afore Richmond, the brilliant strategy uv his lootenants in tyiu the hands uv Pope and Burnside, and kcepiu them from hurtiu us, and : finallj', his runnin with Pendleton agin Liukin, all bind him to the Southern heart. Any one who cood hev run agin Linkin in 1864, they consider must hav bin troo to the South. He is the soothin- ' est man to the Southren people which ever wore bloo. But he wont anser. In the first place there isn't time between this and the next elecshun for him to make up his mind whether he will except the nomination or not; and secondly, ef he did decide in time he lacks pres lige. He has been defeeted wunst, hez George, and it wont do to take up a whipt rooster. .Evidently he is out of the ring. Sexton the carpet is Pendleton. Geo. H. rendleton, I say unhesitatingly, he wan't do. He won't anser. Ther is too grattf a distanc atween him, and the masses 'uv his party. He uses good English, and wears clean shirt collars and xuo eich man kin hev the confidence and esteem uv the Dimocrasy uv the trooly Democratic Staits. These things yoo may aver, are small and inconsequenshel, but I deny it. They are uv vital importance. Ther is a nateral affinity between Dimocrisy and dirty . collars Didst never observe wen Pendleton addroat the freedmen uv Injiana, how cold stun like wuz theaujience ez his finished period 1 fell upon their cars ? r Didst never hear Henry Clay Dean, whoso shirts are worn tnree . consecutive " months, and ' whoso stockings are never changed ? Dist never notis how he lifted 'cm ? It ain't that there's any difference in what they say it's in the shirt collar. Beside, Pendleton hez nono uv the qualities necessary to successful candidacy. He wua born tollabel well off, and hadn't ; nary a struggle in his yooth. He didn't drive on the canal and study Algebra on the back uv a kickin mule, and get knockt off by a profane Captain for neglectin .his dooty ; he wuzn't born in a log cabin in the backwoods, neither did he study -grammar by the lite uv a pine knot, which he held in one hand, and the book in the other. . He didn't learn shoemakin in his boyhood's days, when the deth uv his father, which wuz lamented by all who knew him, drove the family into humble poverty neither did he, while upon the shoe bench, feel within him the cravins uv a noble : ambishen, and risin, rush with his apron on to a law offls and demand to be reseeved ez a student. Nono uv these., lie wuz born uv rich but respectable parence, who put him thro college and started him in life ez comfortable cz ever a young man wuz started in the world.. It's plane to me that Pendleton won't do. . - The same objecshens hold agin Sey- - mouT. I hav no objecshens to him, he hez doue his party servis. Twus him who made a speech to our Irish fellow citizens who wuz engaged in assertin ther sooperiority over the Afrikin Orphan Asylums, in Noo York in 1863, by burnin uv em and beatin out the brains uv the orphlns, and no man doorin the war wuz a firmer friend uv our Southern brethren than he, but he's another Pendleton. Sich a man mite anser for Vice President, but never fer the head uvthe ticket ! . - r Fierce aint to be thot uv, Bookanon coodent stand the pressure uv the offis seekers a week at his age, and sich uv our Southern Dimoeratic Staitsmen ez arc fit fer the place are either in exile far away, or are prohibited from acceptv,n rru wn wood be clad to cive em by the laws uv a unconstooshnel Congns for participashen in the late onpleassntnis. Vallandygum : remains to us, but ho .int avaJaahle. The fact is Vallandygum v. nntiivAd his dav. lied he bin ac: tooated by a desire to benefit his party be wood hev , purposely irritated the guard which arrested him to the extent that they wood hev perforated his bowels, and died on the spot, with aproprit last words for ns to put on banners and t;v. TYum ha wood hev bin uv use to us. Then cood we hev pinted to his axA hnHvind in seDulkrel tones ex claimed, "martyr !" But he selfishly ref oozed to die, and took remarkable good care to preserve hisself intact, and returned to plg A live politicle
martjT is a most inconvenient piece of furnitoor. 3Iarter3 is, y eryjjiuch like thT gruntfn swine uv yoose ouly after death, and they are only fit for present yoose. However sweet they may be wliile fresh, they wou't do to salt down. The story uv his wrong3 did all very well for two or three campaigns, but the people hev lied enuff nv it. It sours on
their stumiks, Its got to be to the Dimocrisy, what hash is to boarders. It obtrudes itself.?- When there is a Senator to "elect, up comes this martyr and buts in among the wires like a bull in a china .shop, demandin it ez the price uv nis suncrius, for the coz. Its ail very well when the martyr haz suthin to recommend him besides his marterdom, otherwise he becomes a noosence of the first magnitude, wich calls for speedy and cffectooal abatement. ' Wich, then, shel we hev for our President ? There is one man, upon whom the minds uv the Dimocrisy uv the country all center. I alood, need I. who write "P. M." after my name, say, to A. J ohnson. He is our rbek and our cheefcst trust, and in him only hev we refuge. It seems clear to mo that he hez all the qulities for successful candidacy. He wuz born uv poor parence, in a poor year, and in a very poor Stait. His father died when he wuz so young that he didn't remember him for suthin like fifty j'ears after, and lie wuz left a poor orfun to make his way alone in the world. He refered to this intercstin fact in his inaugural speech on the 4th uv March, 1865. He made uv himself a tailor and actooaly worked on the board for a livin, and read history while a workin industrusly at at his trade. For the benefit uv the people I wood state a fact that may not be generally known, that he, from this honorable beginnin.hez swung around the entire circle uv oflishel honor, holdin, at different times, every offis in the gift uv the people, from Alderman uv his nativ village up to the Presidency. Ef I remember, he incidentally referred to these facts in a speech he made wunst. There are other reasons for givin him the nominashen, uv wich these are the most prominent : 1. Ef he ain't nominatid and electid Seward, Weed, Raymand, Randall and Secretary Welles will to wunst go back to the Republican party. 2. He hez the effecshens of nearly every offis holder in the Yoonited Staits, and wat a fite they wood make to retane their possishens. 3. His Dimocrisy is entirely satis factory to me. He temporarily abbratcd, but when he returned, he wuz fiercer than ever. He clambered a long way up the mountain uv Ablishen, it is troo, but when he fell, he only sunk deeper in the mire nv Dimocrisy. Wc need never feer to trust sich a man. 4. He hez a incurable hatrid uv the Ablishnists. When they woodent rcceve him corjelly on his various toors, he swore eternal hostility to em. Hence we kin depend upon his bciu troo to us. 5. Ez a further guaranty uv faithfulni3, I may say that I hev it from the best authority that be takes only whisky strate, hevin given over all them demoralizin fancy beverages wich sedoost him while he wuz in the bonds uv inikity and the gall uv bitterniss, There are also other reasons, but these are sufficient. Let us put onto the ticket with him Henry Clay Dean, and the arrangement is complete. We hev the North and South represented, and the intellectooal wings uv the Dimocrisy, I love Dean. Ez he stands before the aujence in all his greasiness, I feel that there is suthin in him wich we must admire. I close this article with suggestin the follerin ticket ; . ' 5 For President, T ANDROO JOHNSON. (Tho pride uv the Postmasters. ) : For Vice President, HENRY CLAY DEAN. Respectfully, A Kentucky Postmaster, I shel sign it thus so that in case any other man succeeds, the authorship kin i be denied. ; j PT0LBCH V. NaSBT, P. M. (Wich iz Postmaster.) Chemists tell us that one grain of iodine will give color to seven thousand times its own weight of water. One indulgence in bad company is enough to contaminate you for life. One 'sinner - destroyeth much good.' The handling of pitch defiles your hands for days and weeks. How much more will evil companionship pollute the purity of your souls. , The celebrated temperance lecturer, Gough, said in one of his recent lectturers : " I would give my right hand to-night if I could forget that which I learned in evil society ; if I could tear from my rememberance those scenes which I have I witnessed, the transactions which have taken place before me." " Oh, youth, shun that evil companion who is leading you down from purity to sin. It has been claimed by the Democrat ic press of the country, that the National Banks were not taxed at all and that their abolishment would save the government from twenty to thirty millions of interest per year. The falsity of this assertion is very manifest by the last report of the United States Treasurer. According to that report, the semi-annual duty recovered from the National Banks during the last fiscal year is 89657,616. - The amount collected from the Banks by the Internal Revenue Bureau, not included in the foregoing is 86,425, 966. This shows an aggregate of over fifteen million dollars per year, paid to the government in tbe shape of taxes, by the National Banks. This is an item that would be felt in reducing the debt, if applied to that purpose. Bodeman & Co., tobacco manufactur ere of St Louis, have been tried for frauds in the United States Court. The suit was a civil one, and resulted in a verdict condemning all the manufactured tobacco, raw material, tools implements, maohinery, eto , in their establishment.
