make his solitude more horrible.nor did he imagine that his condition would have been a contented one, had he received a visit and been entertained with a speech conveyed to his ear through a a long tin water-spout ! No, Alexander didn't; but some of our young men, supposing that they were "out of humanity's reach," like Selkirk, did so use the oyster-cans to drag in the new year, and the tin pipe to do up their spouting ; but the police humanely interfered with their hard exercises, and Mayor Youno, deeming them all fine young men, fined them -all three dollars and costs. Sowing wild oats is a pleasant recreation ; but very costly when thrashed out by maces instead of flails it a-mace-d the boys to find their heads heavy and their pockets light from the labors of one night! . We certainly missed a good thing by our non-attendance at the "Basket Social," given by the G. A. R., on last Saturday night. Our engagements interfered with a season of enjoyment, that a friend i informed us would have been "good for soul and body." It is said to have been a grand affair just such a feast as the "boys in blue" and their glorious wives know how to fix up, and they and their friends know how to appreci-crle.
