JT .When Gf Alfred ',Townend ' learns that GWasbingtan Wood, did ftot ap preciate' his lecture 'in1 this city, on Wednesday night last, he will feel bad ! Instead of pleasing.' everybody presort in the crowded Hall, excepting the
fastidious and particular G. Washington Wood, he should have consulted that gentleman's : peculiar taste and solely tickled his ear, so ' that he might have been tickled through the columns of the Telegram in turn. But alas G. Alfred Tovvnsend did'nt know G. Washington Wood, and he's ."done for!" Towder and rifled-whiskey is'nt a circumstance at blowing up a fellow, when compared with the explosion of G. Washington Wood's blunder-buss at .G. Alfred Townsend! The report was stun, ning! The result may thusly be, summed up: G. W. W's head is left quite bald,' and G. A.'T. has not yet been heard of! . We., have heard Mr. Townsend's lec"ture spoken of in the highest terms of praise by several of our good citizeus, who have brains to properly appreciate a good lecture, and common-sense to comprehend the subject treated, of. Statistics of Friends. At the Year ly Meeting of Friends, held in this city in October last, some statistical information was given,' by which it appears there arj within the limits of the meeting, 13,984 members, families and parts of families, 3,382 ; increase of members about ,1,600., r A very satisfactory report, was received from the Shawnee Indian luissiuu. a iiuuu scuooi is sent un, with an attendance of thirty five pupils, a and there is a surplus on hand of 2,000. Total number of children attending - ... O schools, 3,287 ; children under care of Friends, 1,292; not under their care, 1,226. A standing committee of twelve Friends were appointed to the Peace Conference, and the sum of 82,400 ap propriated for the purpose of furthering the objects of peace. We are indebted to our friend John Bell, of this city for a copy of his re port i cf. the proceedings of the Yearly Meeting, which ho furnished to the British Friend," from which vrs extract the above. - . Sudden: Death. -An old man named Robert Macneale, living about four miles north-east of this place, on Monday last, fell dead while "walking from his cornfield to the House. ' He had been load ing his wagon, with corn to bring to market, and before leaving, had an er- s rand to his house, from which he never returned. We understand he was a man considerably advanced in 3rears. He - eaves a family in moderate circumstan-, ces. lie was buried on Tuesday last. Brookville Democrat, Nov. 22. ' .Not being content with the price of meat being reduced by Capt.. Phil. Wiggins to half the price formerly asked by our butchers, some scamp not having the fear of Phil, or the police before his eyes, effected an entrance into the room adjoining the shop cut out a glass inserted his arm and drew forth a ham that was lying : on top: of a r barrel, and eft for parts unknown. o ' . rRevival. We learn that quite a revival of religion, is blessing the united labors 'of members of the Society of Friends and the M. . Church, of the town and neighborhood of Carthage, Rush Co., Ind, It commenced about three weeks ago, and still continues. ' The revival has extended to Knights- , town, Raysville and Spiceland, and nightly meetings are being held. It is gradually progressing towards our city, where, according to recent published statistics, it is very mnch needed. -. Labor is wanted in ; therSoutb, but it appears that it would not be eo much wanted if some . of the people already there would only work. The Memphis Post says J' that about the doors of every corner grocery in the country towns in that region may be found half a score of men, smoking cob pipes, and demanding vehemently, " Where the shall we get labor to raise our cotton ?" Mercutio said of his wound, -It was not as deep as a well or as widee AaTa gate, but if would do." 1 , ? ' Plantation Bitters will not raise the dead, Rut they cure the sick, exalt the depressed, And render life a thing to be enjoyed. We believe there are millions of living witnesses to this fact. Dyspepsia is a horrid disease, but Plantation Bitters will cure it. It is a most invigorating tonic, for weakness and mental despondency. Those who are " out of sorts' should trj' Plantation Bitters. Applb Vending vs. Journalism An old man and woman who have lor years sold apples and nuts on Spruca street under the shadow of the'Tribone'building are worth 850,000 or 860,000 each, while not one of the writers of that journal, unless a stock-holder, has much more than enough to bury him decently. Read wno Says So. Emm Rev. W, D, Seigfried, Pastor of Twelfth Baptist Cbarcb, Philadelphia. Gentleman r I have recently been laboring tinder the distressing effects of indigestion, accompanied by a prostration of the nervous system, finmerous remedies were recommended by" friends, and some of them tested, but without relief. Your Hoofland's German Bitters were recommended Tby persona who had tried them, and whose favorable mention ef these Bitters induced me to try them. I must confess that I had an aversion to Patent 'Medicines from the 'thousand and one" qwaek "Bitters," whose only aim seems to be to palm off sweetened and dragged liquor upon the eoinmunHy ia a aly way, add the tendency of which, I fear, is to make many a confirmed drunkard. Upon learning that'yonrs wS"rafly a medicinal preparation, I took it with happy cutset. Its ac;ion, not only upon the stomach, but upon the neivous system, was prominent and gratifying.
