On Saturday night last, from 140 to 150 emigrants, direct from Germany, (Bern, we understood) arrived at our depot and staid until late on Sunday night, when they took the cars for Chicago Illinois being their destination as their future home. Thev appeared to be in rather destitute circumstances, and several of them, mostly children, were quite sick. Our German fellow-citizens, whose hearts are always in the right place, and whose hands are ever ready to assist those who are in need, took the major part of them to their church on South Franklin-st., and provided I""1 w 1th an iinilarl ontJ of food, coffee, tfcc, through Sunday, and in the afternoon Rev. Mr. Severinghaus, the pastor of that church where they were entertained, preached to them giving them spirtualand temporal ad vice and counsel, that no doubt will be remembered by these strangers, with pleasure and profit in their new homes The sick at the depot, and those who were attending to them there, were likewise supplied with provisons, and had every care and attention bestowed npon them that it was possible for our fellowcitizens to do. We are informed thnt sixteen of their number died on ship-board, coming over to this country. That Hail Storm. - We noticed several of our farmers whose wheat was damaged, by the hail storm on the 4th of last month, to a considerable extent. Since then we have heard of quite a number, and among them Jonathan Scarce, and J. M. Bulla, and others, South and South-east of town whose promising crops of wheat were either wholly or partially destroyed. J. Brown, west of town, had tventy-seven acres totally destroyed. He immediately commenced plowing, and broke up about 15 acres selected his corn soaked it for about three days until it had sprouted, and then, on Saturday following, June 8th, planted it. The ground being very loose, warm and freshly turned up, the Corn immediately commenced growing, and, on Sunday, the 9th, he informs us that he could then - see it half way across the field. It has continued to grow right straight along ever since, and promises to be one of the best fields of corn oa his place. Mr. Brown related to us a narrow escape he had, when. the. storm was at hcishth on the 4th. "An ordinance to Preserve Peace and Good Order, and Prevent Vice and Immorality," was passed. See Ordinance in another column. J A resolution was passed, instructing the Clerk to subscribe for a copy of the paper publishing Ordinances and other ; official advertisements, at expense of f cit3 and preserve the same. Adjourned to Wednesday night. Pear! Street M. E. ChufcH. 5 On Friday last, we took a look at the new improvements on and in this Church ! and were agreeably surprised at the really fine, yet neat appearance it presents. There is nothing gaudy or taw- ' dry about the frescoing which is tasteful and chaste, and the artiste, Mr. A. j Fiskb, deserves high commendation for i the superior manner in which he has done f his work it is a job that he may weH be T'proud of. ""The rulpit" is really beauti ful in its plain and simple elegance just high enough for the preacher to be near his congregation, so that his hearers : may feel that he is not elevated away 5 above them and has naught in common 3 with them. The old-fashioned up stairs pulpits, always impressed us with this unpleasant idea. Mr, Benjamin Lind?et, designed and superintended the building of the pulpit, and the manner in which he has accomplished the work, reflects K great credit on his taste and skill as an accomplished mechanic. The painting of the seats, outside walls, doors fec, was done by Mr. C. M. Smith, and is well done. The carpentering is the handi work of M.vhlon Joses, who is proverbial for being "a workman that needeth not to be ashamed of his work." A new and beautiful carpet adorns the aisles, the altar and vestibule. We noticed an admirable Brranwmpnt nn thtt ha-L- nf ( each seat an iron Book Rack that is I quite an improvement. The wood-stoves are taken away, and they are to be re placed with coal stoves of a most beautiful pattern, from the establishment of Messrs. Nte & Bro. The entire cost of these improvements, we are informed by good authority, was 81,800, and we think it is cheap at tb I reflecting credit alike on the corrugation worshiping there, as well as on ttl ; indomitable perseverance and ener'' the Pastor in charge. I. W. Wilet. D- D , editor of the Ladies' Re pository, preached the re-opening sermon in the forenoon, and the Rev. Asbcrt Lowert. D. D., preached in the evening. A collection was taken up to defray the expenses of the improvements noted above, which proved a re opening to some purpose, for the sum of 82,00750 was raised showing that the People properly appreciated the good work accomplished. This leaves a surplus of 8207 50, for any fnrturo improvements that may be needed, or to be applied to paying that much on the debt of about $800,' jet due, we learn, on the Parsonage building. - - ; L-' RKatoTAL.
