The following account of an intended miracle i related iu a volume published by Dr. Bonnet, on Morruonisra. It is both curious and "characteristic. We have no doubt whatever that all the Mormon miracle we have heard about have been performed In a similar manner. The age of miracles, like the age of chivalry isTover; but impostors and impositions are on the increase : "Towards the close of a fine summer's day, a farmer in one of the Western States found a respectable looking man at his gate, who requested permission to pass the night under his roof. The hospitable farmer readily complied. The stranger was invited into the house, and a good and Bubstantial supper placed before him. After he had eaten, the farmer, who appeared to be a jovial, warm-' harted, humorous, and, withal, shrewd old man, passed several hours of pleasant conversation with hia guest, who seemed to le very ill at ease, both in body and mind ; yet, as if deurous of pleasing his eutortaincr, replied courteously and agreeably to whatever was said to him. Finally, he pleaded fntiguo and illness as an excuse for retiring to rest, and waa conducted by the farmer to an upper chamber, where he went to bed. About the middle of the nighi. the farmer and his family were awakened by the most dreadful groans, which they soon ascertained proceeded from the chamber of the traveler, i On going to investigate the matter, they found thai the stranger waa dreadfully ill, suffering the most acute pain, and ottering the most doleful cries, apparently without any consciousness of what was occurring around him. Fverything that kindness and experience could suggest was done to relieve the sick man, but all efforts were in vain ; and, to .the consternation of the farmer and his family, the guest expired in the course of a few hours. "In the midst of this trouble and anxiety, at an early hour in the morning, two travelers came to the gate and requested entertainment. The farmer told them that he would willingly oiler them hospitality, but that just now his household was in the greatest confusion, on accouut of the death of a stranger, tlio particulars of which he procoeded to relate to them. They appeared to be much surprised and grieved at the poor man's cal amity, and politely requested permission to see the corpse. This, of course the farmer radily granted, and conducted them to the chamber in which lay the dead body. They . looked at it a few minute in silence, and then the eldest of the pair gravely told the farmer that they were elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterttay Saints, and were' empowered by God to worK miracles, even to the extent of raising the dead ; and that they felt quite assured they could bring to life the dead man before them. " ' . " ;' ". " ! "The farmer was, of course, consider- t ably astonished at the quality and pow- ' crs of the persons who addressed him? and rather incredulously asked if they were quite sure they could perform all If they proposed to do. 'Oh, certainly not a doubt or it. The Lord ha com-' missioned us expressly to work miracles, j . i . . i - e . i i r. in order to prove the truth of the prophet, Joseph Smith, and the inspiration of T the books and doctrines revealed to him.: Send for all your neighbors, that in the presence of a multitude we may bring the dead man to life, and that the Lord and hi church may be glorified of all men." . - -' ' ' "The farmer, after a little consideration, agreed to let the miracle -workers proceed, and as they desired, sent his children to hia neighbors, who, attracted by the expectation of a miracle, flocked to the house in considerable numbers. The Mormonite elders commenced; their task by kneeling and praying before the body, with uplifted hands and eyes, and with most stentorian lungs. Before they had proceeded far with their prayers, a , sudden , idea struck the farmer, who j quietly quitted the house for a few min- I utes, and then returned and waited pati '
ently by the bedside for a tew minutes, until the prayer, waa finished and the elders were ready to perform the miracle. Befo-thy began, he respectfully ' said to them that, with their permission, he wished to ask them a few questions upon the subject of their miracle. They replied that they had no objection- 'The farmer then asked, 'You are certain yon can bring this man to life again ? .ciVtSre'." .-w . How do yuu know that yon can?', I " We hare just received a revelation from the Iord, informing us that we .-" - . - cm., , - 4 .- Arc. voii sum that the revelation vh frm the Lord ? . -" ;
Yes, we cannot be mistaken about
if T . Doai your 4wer to xue UL man to life depend upon the particular nature 'of his disease, or conld yon bring any dead man to life. "It makes no difference to as; we .could bring any dead man to life.' Well if this man had been ' killed, and one of his arms cut off, couia you bring him to life, and also restore him his arm ?' Certainly; there is no limit to the power given to us by the Ixra. it wouia make no - difference, even if both his arms and legs were cutoff. " 4 Could you restore him if his head had been cut off." " Certainly we could. r." Well,' said the farmer, with a quiet sTnHe npon lis features, I do notdonbt the truth of what such holy men assert; but I am desirous that my neighbors here should be fully converted by having the miracle performed in the completest manner possible ; so, by your leave, if it makes no difference whatever, I will proceed to cut off the head of this corpse. KJ i- "" "Accordingly he produced a huge and well sharpened broad-axe from beneath his coat, which he swung above hiahead, and was apparently about to bring down on the neck of the corpse ; when, lo and behold ! to the amazement of all present, the dead . man tarted up in great agitation, and declared that he would not have hi head cut off for any consideration whatever. - ; "The company immediately seized the Mormons, and soon made them confess that the pretended dead man was a Mormon elder, and they had sent him to the farmer's house with directions to die there at- a particular hour, when they would drop in as if by aociuent, and wotld perform a miracle that would as toniah everybody. The farmer, after giving the impostors a severe chastisement, let them depart to pactice their imposition in eome other quarter , : ; ..The Throne of Solomon. The following account of this remarkable pice of mechanism purports lo be taken from the Persian Manuscript, called "The History of Jerusalem : " The sides of it were of pure gold, the feet of emeralds and rubies intermixed with pearls, each of which was as large as an ostrich's egg. The throne had seven steps, on each side were delineated orchards full of trees, the branches of which were of precious stones, representing fruit, ripe and unripe ; on the tops of trees were to be seen figures of plumage birds, particularly the peacock, the etanh, and knrges. All these birds were hollowed within artificially, so as tooccasinally utter melodious sounds, such as the ear of mortal man never heard. On the fir9t step were delineated vine branches, having bunches of grapes, composed of precious stones of various kinds, fashioned in such a manner as to represent the various colors of purple, violet, green, and red, so as to render the appearance of real fruit. On the second step, on each side of the throne were two lions of terrible aspect, large as life, and formed of cast g-old. The nature of this remarkable throne was such that when Solomon placed his foot on the first step, the birds spread their wings and made a fluttering noise in the air. On his touching the second step, the lions expanded their claws. On his reaching the third step, the whole assemblage of faries and demons, and men, repeated the paises of the Deity. When he arrived at the fourth step, voices were heard addrcssiug him in the following manner : "Son of David, be thankful for the blessings which the Almighty has bestowed upon you." The same was repeated on his reaching the sixth, all the children of Israel joined them ; and on his arrival at the seventh, all the birds and animals became in motion, and ceased not until he had placed himself on the royal seat, when the birds, lions, and other animals, by secret springs, discharged a shower of the most precious perfumes on Solomon, after which two of the kurges descended and placed the golden crown upon his head. Before the throne was a column of burnished gold, on the lop of which was a golden dove, which held in its beak a volume bound in silver. In this book were written the Psalms of David, and the dove having presented the book to the king, he read aloud a portion of it to the children of Israel. It is further related that on the approach of evil persons to the throne, the lions were wont to set up a terrible roar, and to lash their tails with violence ; their birds also, and the demons and genii to . utter horrid cries , so, for fear of them, no one dared be guilty of falsehood, but all confessed their crimes. Such was the throne of Solomon, the son of David. , A Gkxtls - Wise's Explanation In the Tolice Court of Chicago, a wife thus ingeniously explained away serious charges of harsh treatment of her poor husband : "One day when she was running across the room with a fork in her hand, he jumped in her way and struck his wrist against the fork, wrenching it Irotn her grip by the tines, which he ran into his wrist Then he undertook to strike her, but she held up a pan of hot dish-water between them, and spilt it all over his head. Then he got still more angty. at this accident, and started to jump at her, but his head came against her hand, and he fell down. 'She took hold of his hair to help him up, and the hair was moistened by the hot water so that it came off. Then she saw it was no use to reason with him any longer, and she left the house." Buna's , Burial Place. Thecehas been at varioaa times considerable dispute about the burial and grave of: Col onel'A&roiu Burr. A" correspondent in Princeton gives the following as the facts : "Col. Burr was buried, according to Ms own reque8t,1n the Princeton Cemetery, within a few days after his decease. His. i remains wera accompanied to Princeton by several relatives and friends from New York, and they were deposited near the grave of his father. Rev. Aaron Burr, the second President of Princeton . College, In regard to his monument there is no mystery or secrecy about it. The monument was pur chased by one or rnpre of Lis near relatives.. and it was put up in open daylight, and sot at midnight, as has been asserted." -
