GSCHMOND, IND., DEC. 2CtV U66. . Washington Wood Exchange on If w-York. "Un we morning 01 ine turn 01 November, 1866, Col. Johh A. Brid, land came into our office, stated that lie bad recently made a large amount of money amoi-i.latinrr in rattan, that hn hmA litat come from Green Moont Water Care, where he had spent the revious nigtit with Gov. IIostov, and be bad eotne to na to solicit our influence ia the support of the ' Governor as a candidate for United States Senator. We replied to his remarks by saying that we had no iiij . ..... w . u . 'j w 4 w .V. vuu VJiWdUV& 4, going to the Senate. bt that the dictatorial course pursued by the Governor's organ at Indianapolis was not very well calculated to bring others to the support of its candidate. Col. Bridglaxd then nitl that . tlitf TTni'm tMinAva li'atfnA county mutt support the Governor and he wanted the Telegram to put itself in the right attitude towards Mortow and that we could "draw vrox nix, at skw tobk, fob thk amocxt." We of course, declined the proposition, and the Colonel, after spending an hour or more in pressing the matter upon ns, finally withdrew." TTelezram. The above paragraph is from the Telegram of last week, and we submit to our readers and the public generally, 4 , 4 . I . . 4. . . 4 wit me story is dsu on us ittce. it is what JonK Pkttit called a "self-evident lie." ' According to his own showing, this oflW was made after the Telegram had come out in favor of Julian, when it was entirely too late to buy the paper up for anj- good purpose. We will f state this proposition and we think every body will bolieve it who is acquainted with Gbobgk Washixoton Wood, ' that if Bkidolasu offered hirn a bribe, he would have taken it unless ho was before 1 : 1 .3 4 1 4 I. , , . 1. l uriueu ua iu uiuer siue, anu tue prouability is, ho would do it then. - ' Geckos Washington Wood refuse to sell out the columns of his paper ! The thing ia incredible, and we are sure not one of his acauaintances will beliovo it. All the circumstances contradict his j story. Ilia interview with IIollowat contradicts it emphatically. The Govsbjcob asked Mit. IIollowat to enquire the name of his liberal friend who bad offered to bay the Telegram. If a friend of the Governor had made an offer, why not tell the Govkrnor the name of hia friend ? IIollowat believed from his manner, and what he said, that no offer had been made, and he told ns so, and we believed it, and we believe it now, and we believed it from the first But, he says, Bridglaso authorized .,'ra to draw uixm him in Npw VnrU. .a be did not limit the amount. What an i imprudent man ! lie ought to have fixed 1 some amount, say live thousand dollars, . beyond which Wood could not draw ; it was very imprudent to leave himself j at the mercy of this unscrupulous Wood. Bah ! Bah ! Mk. Wood, yon have made ' an ass ot yourself. I X he telegram for several years had been violently opposed to Julias, and all at once, without any visible cause, it came out in his favor in an article evidently not written by Mk. Wood, and which we believe was furnished and paid for. This fact we charged npon him, and in reply and defence he intimated that a friend of Governor Moktov had offered him a money consideration to come out in the Governor's favor. We denied this, and for three weeks called upon him to name the friend, and he has at last produced the above story. And now, we beg leave modestly, bnt sincerely, to express tlie opinion, that the article in the Telegram of last week, to which we are replying, is a compound and concocted affair in which the hand and genius of the Editor of the True Republican are plainly visible. las Julian, and Wash. Woods, united to gether ! What a villainous combination ! What a vile and rascally compound ! We think Isaac haa helped to elect Bkidq. land to fill the place which Wood . has assigned him in the story. Isaac has not forgotten the little affair on the cars when he was "hmnd and yoM" with Bridgland. and in which he behaved as became a "scholar and a gentleman" and would doubtless like to take a little reveage when Bsioglamd is a thousand miles off. But let us suppose, for the sake of the argument, that Wood's story is true about Bkidolakd. Bbidglakd would not have offered to bribe Wood unless he believed Wood could be bribed, he would not have dared to approach an honest man or a man of good character in that way, and if hf did, it was because he knew his man. But then follows the incredible statement that he refused the bribe. If Bbidglakd authorized him to draw npon him ia JSew York, without limiting the amount, he could have made money faster than he formerly did by celling whiskey, and that too without danger of being indicted. Wood : Wood !, ask ua to believe in your "spiritual Tappings," in the "Mermaid," "haaoted houses' and the "mad stone, bat don't, don't require ns to believe that yon, rejected this bribe of unlimited Exchange on New York. The records oi Salisbury prison have been found. They contain the names of over 2,000 Union prison era who were "ported missing. The reoorda are at the Death and Burial Bureau, Washing -toa City. It is well known that Col. Bridgland has not only been engaged in cotton speculation, but also in whisky speculation, and deponent does not say what "the amount' was to consist of, whether a bale of cotton, or a few barrels of whisky. ' We are seriously inclined to the belief that the latter would have suited the Telegram , man's former business habits much better than the cotton ; for it would have furnished the minor key to unlock the 'flood-gates of his mighty influence on the Senatorial question ! But seriously we do not believe Col. Bridgland ever made him an offer of either money, cotton or whisky, for his influence, and we base our belief on the knowledge in our possession of his sordid and grasping nature; for we know him to be as avaricious as a miser, and as unstable as water. The little brain that he possesses, is so completely and entirely pickled in self-importanee, that he verily imagines that the moral government of the universe rests upon narrow shoulders, and without him chaos would come again! No one who is at all acquainted with him, but fully believes that had a "consideration," .' in any shape, been proposed to him whereby his pecuniary condition could have been bettered, immediately or remotely, he'd snapped at it like a hungry dog would at a bone. ' . We have not yet been able to perceive how and in what manner Wash. Wood's efforts, as the editor of the Telegram, for or against Gov.; Moutoic, or for or against "any other man," could do cither good , or harm temporally, spiritually : or otherwise; for he only occupies the i the eame position "specifically" that the silly fly did whilst riding on the coachwheel, when he exclaimed to it: fWhat a dust we make !" or to the cousin of the same fly family, that perched himself on the ox's horn and anxiously inquired of the ox if his leeight thereon didn't fatigue , him muchly; and was greatly astonished wheu the old bovine remarked, as he quietly turned his cud, that he wasn't aware of hia flYship'a pce, nd it made no difference to him whether Mr. Fly remained or departed ! Indianapolis, Dec. 17th, 1S66. To the Editor of tie Palladium: I have seen an article in the , Telegram of the 15th inst , in which my name is introduced as a messenger from Gov. Morton, in the following way : ' " On the 22d of November, the Palladium, of this city, containing a reply to our first article, written at Indianapolis, but published as editorial, in which the charge was madii that the Telegram printed the article referred to for a mon ey consideration. . W e replied to this by saying that if a money consideration would have induced us to favor the elec tion of any particular candidate to the office of United States Senator, that wc would have been as clamorous for Gov. Morton as either the Palladium or Journal. . This article brought a. messenger Irom the Governor ' to our office, in the person of William R. HoIIoway, who said the Governor wished to learn the name of the person who had offered us money as an inducement to support him for the office of Senator. We replied to Holloway by saying that the Governor was probably as well aware of who the person offering the money was as we were, and that we should not say anything on the subject unless the demand for the name was made iu a public print, and our answer would bo given in the same way. It appears that II olio way went to the "Palladium office and reported that he had called upon us for the name of the party offering the money, and that we were unable to respond." I will state all the facts just as they occurred. I was in the Governor's Room three or four weeks ago, when a copy of the Richmond Telegram was bronght in and placed in his hands. It contained an article in reply to some remarks of the Tulladium. which charged that an article published in the Telegram in favor of Gcorsk W. JrLtA for the United States Senate had been paid- for, and that the columns of the Telegram had been hired. The Telegram article denied this, and iLtimated in torn that a friend of the Governor's had offered a money consideration to have the Telegram support him for the Senate. The Governor read this article in the hearing of myself and several gentlemen, and said that " he believed it was a falsehood invented and put out as a cover." He then said to me he wished the next time I went " to Richmond that I would call on the editor of the Telegram and ascertain the name of his liberal friend." - The next time I went to Richmond, I called on Mr. Wood at his office, and told him that the Governor had request ed me to enquire who the person was that had offered to pay - him for advocating his claims for the Senate. He declined to give the name. I remarked to him, that " if the gentleman was a friend of the Governor's, there could be no impropriety in giving his same to the Governor." I nrged him to give me the name, bnt be refused. I left him folly con
vinced that, he could give no name, and! that no offer had been made to him, and J
I think it not improper to add Connection, that I. was in Richim rectiy afUr the first Sanatoria appeared in the .telegram, and heard a namber of pefoflspeak of it. -Every one of whom expressed the opinion that the article,, had , been . furnished, the editor of the Telegram, and its' Insertion paid for. Trkasckeb's Offick. The eligibilit' of Maj. John Sim, Treasurer elect of this County, is called in question, from the fact that he has never been naturalized. He came to this country, from England, when about thirteen years old, his father died ia England, having moved there from Scotland, where the Majorwas born. He haa been in this country for, nearly thirty -four years he has voted, held office, served bis country as ; a soldier in suppressing . the late slave- ' holders' rebellion, and lost the use of his good right arm by a rebel bullet, and neither himself or any of his friends ever dreamed that he was not, to all intents and purposes, a bona fide citizen off the United States. Had it not been lor a human cormorant, who faded to get ! the prey he had asked the people to give him and was refused by an overwhelming majority, this deruier resort, of ousting a brave, worthy, and crippled soldier, who was exposing his life to the bullets of the enemy, whilst his oppouent was at home, actively engaged with bis 3 copperhead party denouncing the war as f a " failure," and decrying it as a nigof. ' . . From the written opinions we ; have seen of some of our leading Attornies, the election is void, ami another election will have to he field next Fall for Treas urer.' . There is one short passage in tbe Report of the Secretary' of the Navy, just presented to Congress, which, probably overlooked amid the imposing details given in that document of tha strength of onr naval arm, and tbe movements of our squadrons in different parts of tbe world, merits, we think, particular notice. It is this : " But one slaTer has been fitted utat wi thn southern coast of Africa within tha past year, and she has been captured on the coast of Cuba with her cargo. It was the opinion of prominent oScials atLaando, including the French Admiral on that station, that the" slavetrade had expired, and that this blot en civilization had become at last a matter of history.' We also find the following in tlae report : "The vessels on the West India station were in strncted to exercise vigilance in detecting slavers and preventing the slave-trade, provided any lingering remains of that nefarious traffic still -listed. Bnt no capture bave been made, and it in to be hoped this infamona trade is extinguished." "Mack,"-the Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati CoMwcrcial, in a letter dated tbe 7th, says : "The Democratic party having been annihilated in the late campaigns, it is the intention of tbe Radicals to devote a few spare moments this winter to the ex- ; termination of tbe Mormons. Ben. Wade has already called up a bill in the Senate, which, with amendments proposed by Howard, of Michigan, will play geceral smash with tbe domestic arrangements of the Saints. Among ether thiugs, it proposes to prohibit Mormon priests from solemnizing matrimony, and, by vesting this business in the hands of United States " Judges, to restrict the Siints to one wifa apiece. This will be bad for the male Saints, bat the females onght to rather like it. Dr. Johcson opposed polyg- ! amy on the gronnd that no man could marry two - wives without leaving some ether man without even one so nearly were the sexes, in the great economy ' of nature, equal numerically. The Radicals oppose it because, being the party of ideas and progress, and all that, they intend to be in the Held, in a year or two, under tbe banner of woman's rights, and the leadership of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Anna Dickinson ; and these two strong-minded females don't believe in that condition of aflairs which limits a woman to the undivided fortieth or fiftieth of a man. That's not enough for tbem. If Sumner wants to keep in good atand;ng with tbe Radicals, he must drop the nigger question for a while, and dive into the sex question. The nigger is pretty nearly exhausted, and next in order, according to the Radicals, comes the female. Sumner bad better give us a little of bis experience in , monogany in tbe concrete and polygamy in the ab stract, and then join t'ae party of progress, with Anna Dickinson and Mrs. Stanton. If he doesn't hurry up, hell be left in the rear, for tha party of progress, like time and the tide, waits for no man.
