I should not wontlt r if you, too, would help you c husband to plar ill, to get bim otf, like some other wives that we have heard of.' The speaker gave a light, prevtking laugh, just sarcastic enough to excite Margaret's color and bring forth a warm replv; for'KlU Smith thoughtless girl loved to urge her friend, of whose in petuosity she "'was; well awai e, to utter that which in her cooler moments she often regretted. 'I, said she. wed a man who has taken rso part in this great struggle for our nation's life?' Never! No ..toward or traitor shall ever tall Margaret Braiuard wife! Haughty, beautiful Margaret! llow well 1 lemembev you, as yon stood there in all your scornful loveliness, your eye flashing, and your proud lip curling with contempt, your noble figure drawn to its full height, ready to-. throw down the gauntlet to all combatants i How much of misery had been avoided, had the conversation dropped here! 'Since you are so .very solicitous to scud the youth of Clairville to the war, von should imitate the chivaltlc heroine of olden times, ancl olTer yourself to the first brave knight who. sallies forth iu arms. I have 1 title, doubt that a whole regiment of volunteers' would rush forward at once with so' great a piize in prospect." Again that stinging, sareatic lauth rippled through Ella's rosy lips. She little dreamed that a life hung on the reply sheW'fcewlleasdy provoked. Alas, that careless words should be so 14 with fate! J - And so 1 will, was Maggie's rrtkles answer. -I will marry the first young roan of or village who enlists as a sol dier to fight for the Union on the battle field, should he ak it of me. No oth Conditions are annexed?" It is understood, was the proud reply, that I mean no oilier than a man of honor, and one of m v ow n position in society.' ; - ' '" She started, aud a deadly pallor overspread her. faceas the lace curtains were put back, and a young man, who had been standing for the last few moments in the "window, stepped into the apartment. There was a strange light in Lis eye as he regarded Margaret, : ud he spoke in a dear, manly voice: every word he utjered fell oii her heart like syllables of fire. 'I understand that Mis Brainard, now. In all honor, pledges her hand to the first
man of the village of Clairville. provided lie le of fitting rank and respectability-, who' rn lists as a eoldier if the Federal army.' "" " She was near sinking, but bravely rallied, and with a faint laugh replied in the afQrtaative, adding there was little danger of her beinfr called on to redeem
the pledge, as brave men were scarce, j Clarence Howard bowed his stately head and turned away to hide the burn ifig spot her taunt had brought to his theek. - - . , Other guests now arrived, and the subject which had for a few momenta excited them all so much was apparently forgotten. Once she took her hand in hers as they stood together. , Good heavens! Maggie, your hand is ! like ice !' The xuild.-n closing of her sister's i hands on hers with a nerveless force that almost canned the nails to enter the flesh, warned her to be silent, and caused her to shrink with paiu. At lenggh the ever.iag was over, the last 'good night' was spoken, the last guest departed, and the Maters together sought their chamber. Laura gazed on Maggie with astonish ment, almost with fear, to see her look so changed. Oh, how ghastly how hag-' gardfchewas! .'Margaret, dear Margaret, what ia the fnaticr with you V . 'Matte, rr" she repeated 'matter? Knough i the matter ! Oh, God forgive me, sinful creature that I am !' - ''Why, what have you done?' 'Done? "Oh, Laura, Laura! Why, Masie, you sure'.y do not dream of such folly as to keep a promise given in such a je-ting mauuer?' Not keep ii? Yes ; the poor boon he naves Khali not be withheld. If Clarence Howard claims the fulfillment of niv reckless offer, he shall have it; when he goes lorth to meet the enemy on the battle-field, he shall know that his wife, Margaret, is praying for him at home.' 'liutyon do not love inni. Yesterday I thought so, too. and I rejected the olfer of his hand : but to-night when George told me that he met him as he left the village, and brought me a message from him, the scales fell from my eves, and I then knew my own heart's t eakness.' . We w ill not linger over the rest of that sad night, but hasten on with our tale. Clarence Howard returned to Clairville in three days after the party at Mr. Jlraiuard s, and he was dressed in the uniform, of a private in the Regiment, . Y. Volunteers. He had enlisted, for the love of Margaret Brainard; but he was to generous too enforce a reluctant fulfillment of her pledge. We knew ler resolution, and it never wav ercd. He was to leave in one week, and they were married the day before his departure. There was no wedding display; but many kind, affectionate friends were assembled in the old Clairville church to witness the marriage ceremony, and cordially wish them joy, and pray for every blessing to attend the young couple through life. The parting of the youthful husband and wife was indeed one of heart-sadness ; but each strove for the others sake to bear it bravely. Maggie, always noble and unselfish, thought more of him than herself, and crushed back the tears, and forced the trembling lips to smile adieu when he pressed her to his heart in silent anguish ; but the word -good-bye she could not speak, and she turned away without a word. I saw her face at that moment it was like that of a corpse. She went into another room for a few moments, but was at the window again, waving her hand to Clarence as Gecrge touched the whip to the horses and they started away. Maggie secluded herself verv much I after the departure of her husband, and j 1 seldom saw her except at church, or j at the meeting of our 'Soldiers Aid Soi cietv. There she never failed us, and was one of our most efficient workers. She received letters from Clarence every week. He was in the Army of the Potomac, so it took but a few davs for letters to reach us. He always wrote in good spirits, and was ever looking forward , counting the months, to the expiration of his term of service, when he should again return to his darling wife. . ;.. By-aud-by came a cessation of writing. Three, four, five weeks passed a ay, and no tidings, except through the newspapers, which gave the meagre information that the army was "on the march.
Margaret, unable longer to endure suspense, wrote to the Colonel of Clar ence's regiment. Ere sufficient time bad elapsed to receive a reply, the whole countrv was ringing with the rumor of a terrific battle, and immense slaughter in both Union and rebel armies. The tut nf killed and wounded had not
yet been published, and over the - - . 1 wnoie land hung the dark pall of suspense. pressing like an iron weight on tne ionu hearts at home, which scarce dared to hope, ytt each praying that its own loved misht be spared. 1 felt anxious for Margaret; I knew how she must be suffering under the tor ture of wailing to Learn whether the ct;j from which she must dunk held death or life. :I went to see her, and found Lur just as I expected, seated y .the window gazing on tlie roaa uy w nun mi mai! would arrive. ue saul evenlittle. but tried to appear interested in nn lee ble attempts at cheerful conversation All t nneo .ho rranff MIfc : Ther-.', said she, '1 near tue stage , horn ; the mail is coming.' - j bhehes.rd it quicker than I, foranxic- j ty rendered her sense of hearing unnatu- j rally acute. - i She took op her liUle hat, which lay ; all readv on the chair beside her. t Slop, Maggie,' said I ; 'I will go for I vour letters. There was no detaining her, sa I waited with her to tlie office; and oh ! how long the brief time seemed while tne mail was looked : over and distrilMtte.lJ anrt ivt- aril there ainonn tl:e crowt ot others as eager and trembling as our- j selves, and waited. ! There was one letter for Mrs. Ilow.nd, : and some papers for her father. Come, said she to me, in a q;7ick toner, as soon s" her trembling tinkers hud clasped her mail, and without auot ier word, we left the ollice. How well I read her ttelings, r.s w flew, rather than walked to her home! Iter questioning agony to learn the contents of that letter! 1 could not see Ler lace, for it was quite daik; but I could hear her breath come short ami q lick. I was glad to see that Laura had lit the lamp" in the parlor. Margaret paused not until she entered the room and stood by the centre table. She tore oil the envelope, and throw it from her to the floor, arid so excitea was she that sue shook like an aspen as hc leaned over the page devouring it with her eyes. Laura aud. I watched her the while, our hearts healing till they sounded in our own ears like drums. One moment of racking suspense, u. wild shtiek. Maggie lay senseless at our feet. The letter was from Chit ence's colonel. It stated that he was severely, it was feared mortally, wounded hi the breast by a b.iotitt. The ofiicer said that he had found him, when the battle and carnage were over, on the field, almost ex hausted from loss of blood. lie had done all lor him that lay in his powei, and only left hirn when lie was placed in an ambulance to be taken to tlie hospital. He advised his wife, if she wished to see him. to hasten on to Washington, ere it was too late. The next morning Maggie and her father were on their way South. We heard nothing from them, for a ... j i . : week. At tnc-expirauou oi ittat time George re?eived a telegram requesting him to meet them with the carriage nt the railroad depot. He was also to have a hearse in attendance to convey home the body of Clarence How ard. It would be impossible for mc to de scribe tlse eifect of this news on the people of our tiiiage. A -mournful wai! burst from every heart. -'The shops v.-ere closed, and the inhabitants turned ut tiie day they were expected. Not. one team, but tunny were waiting the artival of the affiieteti :md the dead, and the sad cortege was receive. i ly us on their return, with sebs and tears. This was tlio- shock of the first death in our little com'tn"uriity 1V the hands of the enemy. It was a surprise that shook anelgtieved us. Since then we have hud, alas! many, many such sorrows to hear; but, as the soldier, after the first bailie, becomes accustomed to eianrer, so we have learned to endure such bereavir.ents with com posu t e. The funeral of private Howard took place the day alte r the body was brought home, and,- an immense concourse attended his remains to the ir last icstingphice it the village graveyard. A stranger who looked cn the pale j features of Ids young wife-, might have ( supposed her too calm, too little demon j strative to tccl very deeply the loss of I her husband. But we who knew her j well shuddered to observe her quiet, un- j natural manner. It seemed as though j the warmth of life had gone out of her. j l'oor Mggic ! she seemed like a ma- j chine, wound up for a certain time to per- j form certain duties, that, when the work was deme. would run ilown and stop. So j she buried her dead, and then lav pros- j trate on a be'il of sickness for weeks. When, at length, she regained her ! bcdilv health we saw that the impulsive laughing Maggie Brainard had given place to quieC melancholy Widow Howard, who seldom smiled and never more would be gay. She appeared now to have but one purpose in life, and that wss to render aid and comfort to the sick and wounded soldiers. She left Clairville, and during the remainder of the war we often hearel of her as one of the most leneie.- and attentive nurses in the hospitals at Washington. - Since the close of the strHe she has comeback again, but she looks old and worn. Her health is broken, and she never mingles in society. I fear.that ere long we shall be called upon to lay her in the old churchyard besieie her husband. Misekt loves company, and so does a marriageable young lad Liuoh andrlattery IotJi will intoxicate in the first pljee a nan staggers himself, in the list Le staggers Lis friends. ; " These is one good wife in the country, and every man thiuks he hath her.
