But the monsters knew no mercy, and, as one of them was about to fire, the wife sprang out of her bed and placed herself before her husband, begging with all the fervor of a devoted wife, under circumstances so dreadful, for her husband's life. But in vain. The savage removed one of her arms from her husband and fired, shooting the man (whose only crime was to be a Union man and an ex-Union soldier) through the body. Breaking away from his wife, he stiggcred across the room, trying, perhaps, to escape, but fell dead after receiving three more shots. The assassin then fired oft the remaining two charges of the revolver in the room, and then the whole party left. 'No arrests have been made, nor will there ever be. One of the m.ist fi iyntful marine cri!aniities t'jat has occurred for many years was the loss of the steamship Evening Star, which foundered about -ixty miles fi'oru the South Carolina coast, on tier pas-if;e from New York to New Orleans. B it few particulars of the disaster hare reached us. The Evening Star left New York on the 20th ult , with two hundred and fitly passengers, and a crew of fifty men. Among the former were Gea. Palfry, wife and lister. There were also on board, Spnulding's Circus Company, a French opera troupe, numbering fifty persons. and lastly, eighty-seven public women, who were being taken to New Orleans by the keepers of some of the houses of ill repute in that city. Of all on board, only seventeen, mostly members of the crew, are known to have escaped. The ill fated ship foundered in the great 6torm, from which many other vessels suffered, and the sea was so rough that some of those who had succeeded in getting into the boats were washed overboard, and perished. The descriptions which we have of the recent gale indicate that it was of great severity and very wide spread. Accounts of several wrecks have reached us, and we may perhaps bear of still other results of its furv. George Francis Train on Whisky. George Francis Train withdraws from the canvass as a candidate for Territorial delegate in Co.igress from Nebraska, for reasons which are thus set forth : 'I am told to-day that money is wanted for carriages to bring np the voters, and to scatter among the beer shops and the groggeries. Any spare money I may have I prefer to devote to education and christian charities. Purchasing votes debases the franchise and demoralizes the people. I have lectured too often for the Irish Father Matthew societies to go back on them by treating the voters.
