The Staeteaee.!i 'Kir)'OlV ( The Baton Kouge Advocate tells tbe AjIIowjng: jUat Week scsm was u? bebra the jaryf, ftnd the District Attorney had exhausted all hia elequence in the attempt to convict a darkey for stealing a goose. . , Tbe i adge was tirvd, the j -ry wearied, and tbe bar, officials and epecutera; all hoped the case would be speedily closed; but they were doomed to disappointment. Up rose old Major r , tbe hero of a thousand contestsat the bar, and for two hours a flow of eloquence poured forth upon the ears of the jary, evidently convincing them of the prisoner's innocence. Shrugs and jestures denoted that all they wan
ted was a chanoe to get out of the jury corner, I. tend that goose, darkey, prosecutor, and all concerned might go to Guinea if they could onlybe released. The Major piled it on thick; he showed them law after law; read Supreme Court condensed decision,' referred to everything relative to geese, from the itoman time down to the present, and closed hU brilliant appeal bjr , calling their attention to the honest countenance of his client. Could such a ma steal? The heavens forbid ! Look at bis face; You perceive sterling honesty in every lineament, Could you steal, prisoner at tbe bar? Could you steal a goose?' Yes, sir, I did steal um; but I did't eat um, was the unexpec ted response, and the gallant Major, thunderstruck snd exhausted, caved. , IlowTrulr Sweet. . The rest would not interest a Cold-hearted public, adds Punch. - - Caught With a 'Liv ing Widder.' The elder Mr.Weller was caught in a railroad car with a widder. Here is his account of it: : 'It was on the rail,' said Mr. Weller, with strong emphasis; I was goin' down to Binning1 ham by tbe rail, and I was locked up in a close carriage with a living widder.' Alone we was; the widder and me was alone;. and I believe it was because we was alone and there was no clergyman in the conwayence, that 'ere widder didn't marry me afore we reached the half-way station. Yen I think how she began a screaming as we was goin' under tunnel j in the dark how she kept on a faintin', anda kitchin' hold o' me and how I tried to burst open the door as wos tight locked and perwenteU all escape. Ah! it was a awful thing most awful ! ' A New Way to Pay a Debt. : Miss Nettie White, at Chicago, III., the other day, selected a pair of shoes at a store, and, taking them in her hand, went to tbe door, saying she wanted to show them to a friend, and would be back in a few minutes. Meantime, would the obliging clerk be kind enough to keep her little satchel Ijr her? The obliging clerk did so, but several more than a few minutes elapsed, and the young lady did not return. The little satchel was opened, and found to be empty. The clerk was indignant, for the shoes were not paid for. A few days after he met her in the street and demanded payment. She had no money, but asked if he would take her water-fall as sacurity. lie would; so she quietly detached it and gave it to him. The next day she called at the store and redeemed her Lack hair! - Got the Hld SerpeaU' : '. . . Kev. F. F. Huntington, tho new bishop of Maine, who killed a rattlesnake on Mount liolyoke last week, says he has 'been engaged in a warfare with The Old Serpent all his life' time, and he thinks he has got him now. The snake was four feet long and eight inches in circumference, and was coiled, under tha feel of the Bishop's borse.ready to spring, when discover'd. Returning Thanks. . - One day, at the table of the late Dr. Pease, Dean of Ely. just as the cloth was removed, the subject of discourse was that of an extraordinary mortality among lawyers. 'We have lost,' said a gentleman, 'not less than six eminent barristers in as many months. The Dean, who was quite deaf, rose as his friend finished his remarks, and gave the company grace: 'For this and every other mercy, the Lord's name be praised!' SeUI importance Illustrated. An Ox that all day long with yoxe was sore oppressed, lay down upon his. bed of straw, his weary limbs to rest. 'Than you,' the Ox replied, I wist not you were there; and whether now you go or stay, shall, neither, know or care.' -Some carry, as they thinit, the nation fate about em; But on its axis, I suspect, the world would move without 'em.
