Starr, Eiq , who is making preparations to take up the pipe from Phuniner k Kelley's corner to the gas work, and put down a larger one in its place. With the new improvements already made and to be introduced, sufficient gas, and that of an excellent quality, will hearafter be supplied to consumers to their entire satisfaction. Richmond, April 10th, 1808. Tbb "Staff of iufb." Nothing like sending a ample of life-sustaining food to the printer to hare it property tested, aa judgment is always infallible an 1 never biassed. Believing this, Messrs. Henly, Stake A Co., sent us sample ot their Flour from their establishment near the depot, made from selected Wheat, (Uie only kind they use for their trade,) and our better half says she never had a better article of Flour in the house. Add her testimony to ours, and it makes a clear case that Henly. Starr A Co.'s is Am place to get your Flour, it you want first-rate Bread. They have also, for sale all kinds of Feed : Corn, Oats, Middlings, Shorts, Bran, Barley Chop, AcGive them a call. A Remsmbbamcb. When G. W. Harper, Esq., editor of the Crawford County (111.) -4rM. was on a visit to Richmond, a short time ago, he presented us with a neat Masonic breastpin, on which is inscribed square and compass on the face of the letter " G. It warms our heart to be thus remembered by one of our old apprentices particularly when thus accompanied by the M sign " that the donor is endeavoring to square his actions and circumscribe his desires within the compass drawn by the Grand Master of the Universe, indicated by that initial letter. May he travel safely over the rough and rugged road of lite, and prosper in every laudable undertaking, ami we are dire be will engage in none other. So mote it be 1 " Heavy Calculation. The last Telegram, felicitates itself greatly and is very jubilant over the result of its Temperance engineering exploits at the last nominating election, claiming no less than six of the candidates, that the "bloody ten" in their capacity of grand jurors, had placed upon their ticket as trmprrance men, (most of them without their knowledge or consent,) and who received votes from all shades of opinion on that question. Now, the fact is, the Trltgrom only raised the temperance issue, on Wm. W. Ftmlke, ( r the reason that he voted against what is called the Shuey Bill" i.i the last legislature. Cox. who was a member of the last house, was nominated by this so called "convention" he voted for that "Shuey Bill." If any thing was decided by the recent nominating election, in regard to the Tdr.jram't lavorite measure, the vote received by these two individuals should be taken by our neighbor as a criterion, as to that bill being acceptable to the people, or otlierwise. Here is the vote received by these two gentlemen : W. W. Fo'ulke 1.13 Elihu Cox Foulke'a majority 1,074 From the looks of tt e above, and from the fact that Mr. Foutke is nominated in despite of the tinge labors of the Tiraram.oxve would conclude that Mr. F. had certainly found that celebrated "North-West Passage" so frequently and eloquently alluded to by that paper, ani that its editor had actually found Symmes's Hole," and, instead of his continue ! vain-boasting, be would quietly retire thither, creep in and draw the Hole" aforesaid in after him ! Pkach Prospect. Although at a distance otf, we rejoice that there is a fair prospect yet of this luscious fruit. Egypt of old, when famine in Israel prevailed, was the land of plenty, and the latter-day "Egypt," (politically so called,) is destined this seasou to be the land ofplenty in the Peach line. Lerort M. Larsh, Esq., exhibited to us a peach twig, wbicU was sent to him by his brother, Pacl H. Larsh, Esq., of Centralis, Miami Co , Illinois. It was about seven inches loug, and contained eight buds. Mr. Larsh, writes that the prospect for a heavy crop of Teaches in that country, was excellent. We certainly hart the greatest country in the world what we fail in.producrog in one part of it, is sure to be , produced in another, and all the citizens of Uucle Sam's dominions generally need to make them superlatively happy and contented, besides Peaches and the productions of their rich and versatile soil, is a more extended and thoroughly diffused Patriotism and charity for differences of opinion on questions that time can alone settle satisfactorily, by the general adoption of the "make-haste-to-go-slow" plan of onr martyred Liwcots.
The Valley Railroad. R. J. Strickland, Esq , canvassing gent for the Valley Railroad, paid visit to our otlice last week. He gave very flattering accounts of the propect, north of Cambridge, of raising the required amount of subscriptions asked hy the projectors of the road from that section to enable them to complete it to liagerstown. The Cambridge City Mirror states that the amount necessary to complete the road from Laurel to Counersville has been assumed by some of the citizens of
this county and tendered to Mr. Lord, provided he would agree to build the road as far as Connersville. Mr. L. refused to accept the proposition because he would not go further north than Laur el unless he had the amount required as necessary to finish the road from Laruel to Cambridge City, and unless this was done in a reasonable time he should en ter into an arrangement with the Rush county men and go from Laurel to Ilushville, at which place he expects to make a northern connection with the Fort Wayne road, running from Rnshville to Muncie. The Valley Road, if built will have one of the best grades in the State, and its ample facilities for the shipment of Ireight would enhance the value of produce all along the vallej. The increased value of everv man's property, tying within reach of the road, would amply repay all that may be subscribed towards building it. We hope the people living between Connersville and Cambridge will awaken to their true interest, and furnish the means demanded from them as necessary to ensure the completion of the road Conn. Times. X-tOur lriend Stkick, is and has been for sometime engaged in, to him, a new business serving the Loiti, by procuring stock for the "Vallej' Railroad,' which enterprise is wholly under the control and was projected by Mr. Lokd, of Cincinnati. Friend S. makes a capital canvassing agent, and has been very successful in procuring stock it is his "forte," Arteraus Wardically speaking ; he is emphatically at home in enumerating the advantages of a railroad to the farming community especially. If there ever shall be an opening for promotion in the Lokd's R R , at a "fat'' salary, we hope St ick, will "press" forward and "take"' it, as a well-earned reward for his valuable services. Lecture Next Saturday Night. A. M. GuiswoLD, Esq., known by the now de plume of the " Fat Contributor," gives a lecture in Starr Hall on Saturday night next. Genuine Wit, Humor, Sentiment and Song comprises the entertainment to which our citizens are invited. The Cincinnati Commercial thus speaks of Mr. Gkiswold's performances, aud, judging him from that notice, we feel willing to guarantee a rich treat to all who may patronize him : "We have heard many comic lectures, never j'et had thelortune to listen to one who seemed to have such keen conception of humor, and such an unfailing supply of original wit as the "Fat Contributor." His manner is easy, perfectly fluent, and very pleasing, and there is nothing strained or studied in his innumerable witticisms. Mr. G. is a lecturer whom an intelligent audience may closely study aud quietly enjoy to any extent. He sings with, taste and spirit." AMUSEMENTS. Tbb Sphysx. An Egyptian Marvel, a Lumao head chiseled from stone, changed to actual living matter, and made to speak, sing, drink, smoke, and deliver its oracles, aa at the time of its first weird aod mystical conception, nearly four thousand years ago quicker., than the lightning's flash crumbles to dust, leaving the densely crowded auditory spelt-bound, trausfixed, wonder-stricken, at the tnaivelous sight which ha.- so thrilled and startled the millions w ho hare beeu fortunate enough to w itness this, the greatest sensation which haB ever appeared since the creation of the world. Since its arrival in this country, whole cities as it were, have uight after night vaiuly endeavored to obtain admission to the Halls. It is a mystery and a problem which the scientific and the learned of the present century can uever solve. This gigantic and iuexplicable wonder is destined to create the wildest enthusiasm and exciteinaut erer yet witnessed in this city, or on the continent of America. It has thus far been produced in this country only in the cities of Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Uoston, Pittsburg, Cleveland, Columbus and Dayton, aud fur weeks the largest halls in the above cities were found insufficient to accommodate the thoujauds who nightly thronged around tbedoois. It will make its firstappearance in our city at Surr Hall, next Tuesday evening, in connection with Somerby A Bruces' colossal aud extraordinary Gift Sensation, aui will positively remain Three Days only. Ot this popular and very successful Troupe, the Press in the cities, thai far visited, are filled with praise and commendation. Somery A Bruce give everybody a Present. No Blanks. Kiehmoad lfartiealrat Association. U . Li J2ih, ISM. The Preaideat being absent, the Society was called to order by the Vice Preaideat. The minute of the previous seeting were read aad approved. , . The Committee appointed at the last meeting to confer with the County Board tor a joint Fall Exhibition, report that tie Agricultural Society propus placing the Horticultural department under the control of this Society, they also propose setting apart
rone hundred and flity dollars to be expended in tlx payment of premiums ia the Horticultural department. W. T. Dennis was present, and stated that in addition to the above, the Agricultural Society will pay all nece-sary expenses connected with the exhibition, and this Society shall have the privilege of making its own Premium List. On motion, the society accepted the proposition, and appointed a Committee of Lewis Jones, E. V. Teys and Hiram Sulser to prepare a Premium List far said exhibition. Dr. O. P. Baer, at his own reqsest, was reinstated as a member of the Sock-ty. Mr. bedding not being present to address the AssocUtiou, the subject of Pear culture was taken op i and discussed. Cornelius Katliff said, there hare been a great many f. reign Pears introduced in this country, and but tew of them, on account of our climate have doDe any good. He regards the Seckel and Early Catharine as the most hardy of our varieties Next in point of hardiness, are the Bartlettand Flemish Beauty. He prefers sUudards to dwarfs. C. S. Msnnenhall, thinks dwarfs entirely worthless, has dug up a part of bis dwarfs and planted standards in their stead. He has refused to recommend them when he was the looser, by so doing. Jacob Thomas, said he would plant standards if they should not bear during his lifetime, somebody would reap the benefit of his labors. If be had control no man or woman should get married until they had planted a certaiu number of fruit trees, if fruits were more generally planted along the public roads, there would be less inducement to over-run private fruit grounds. Jerre. Hyde, said he had expected to plant pear tret'H, but the experience of the members had shown dwarfs to be worthless, and he could not afford to piani sianuaras iroui me iact tnat ne could naruiy ho e to lire long enough to see them fruit, as it requires about twenty years for them to come into bearing, he thought the object in planting fruit-trees, was that we might get som." of the fruit ourselves, and not those who come after us should have all the benefit. James Hamilton, said he planted both dwarf and standards when he was sixty years of age, and he Las lived to s.-e the standariUJas well as dwarfs bearing fine crops of fruit, he should have been well satisfied to think somebody wool i be benefited by his planting if he should not have been. He thought every land owner should plant fruit. lr. O. P. Baer, said he had dwarf pears in his garj den, that are eleven years old and as yet they have never paid for their cultivation. Every man should i plant pears and plant standards, and we should not only plant pears, but we should other fruits. He has Apple and Cherry trees on his side walks, and the boys have learned that they can have the fruit when it is rijie, an 1 consequently they never disturb it until it is ripe, and they never injure the trees in any way whatever. He thinks by treating the boys kindly, and by planting trees in out-of-the-way places for their benefit, the evil of fruit stealing may be remeI died. A proof ot this lie referred to Germ .ny, where fruits are cultivated along all the public roads where the people are supplied without trespassing on private orchards and fruit gardens. Hence to a great extent the proverbial honesty of the Germans. On the other hand in Ireland there are no such provisions made, the land owners protect their fruit Gardens by high stone walls and impenitmble hedges, and consequently the proverbial dishonesty of the Irish. Dr. Baer read a communication from D. P. Johnson, Secretary ef the Xew York Agricultural Society, requesting that he should send to their department samples of the cereals of this portion of the State. At the suggestion of Dr. Baer, the Society agreed to send a sample of the different kinds of Grain to the Secretary to be placed on exhibition. Any per-, sun having an extra article of Wheat or Corn (in the ear) are requested to present it at the next meeting of the Society, on April 14th. AV. I. Dtilin was appointed to read a paper at the next meeting- of the Association. The season is now approaching when the meetings of the Association should be and are the most interesting and with the view of keeping up an interest, and a paying interest the, Society would urge upon the members the importance of prompt attendance. All who feel interested, are invited to cmo. The Society adjourned to meet on April lath, at j 2 o'clock P. M. W. L. Tatlob, lce-Fres t. V. I. Dclim, Sec'y. Found at Last ! It is mide on the bet principle while the foreign watch is gen 't ally made on no principle at all. The foreign watch is m istly m.vle by women and boys, by hand. While tbeir labor ia cheap, their work ill dear at anv price. hue!i watches are made without plan, and sol 1 without guarantee. They are irregular in construction, and irregular in motion. Tbey are design.-! only to M'tl, nntl they buying ia the party mostt'mrouglilr sol t. Those who have kept "sneers," Mepines," and "Swiss levers," in professed repair for a few years will appreciate tbe truth of our statement. TIIE PLAN OF THE AMERICAN WATCH Instead of being made of several hundred little pieces, screwed together, the body of the American Watch is formed of of SOLID PLATES. No jar interferes with the harmony of its working, and no sudden -s'.o.k cuii throw its machinery oat of gear. In riding or any business pursuit, it is all held together as firmly as a single iece of metal. It ia just what all mart)ii:-rv should be 1st. ACCURATE, 2d. SIMPLE, 3d. STRONG, 4th, ECONOMICAL. s We not only .-oi-ure cheapness by onr system, but quality. We ilo not pretend that our Watch can be bought for Ivs rn nicy than the foreign make-believes, but that for its r-jal value it is sold for one-half the price. OCR SOLDIER'S WATCH (named Wm. Ellery ia what its nam - in lieafes Solid, Substantial, and alwaliS "Reliable w arrant" I to stand any amount of Marching, Riding or any fitiiing. Our next bi'c r quality of Watch ( named P. H Bartlett ; is similar in siie aod general appearance, bat has iii .rj jewels, and a more elaborate finish. OUR LADIES WATCH, recently bronght ont, ia pntnp ia a pr-?t variety of patterns, many of them of rare beauty au 1 workmanship, is quite small, but warranted t ikeep time. THE PROOF of the merit of oar Watch may be found in the fact tbat we now employ over aeven hundred workmen in our factories, and that we are stilt unable to "upply the constantly increasing demand - Our tir-.e-qaarter plate watch is thinner and lighter than the other we har described. Its an chronometer balance i d. !icu.- adjusted to correct the variation caused by car.gr of tempt ratore. These watchare tbe fruits of Ue latest csperimenta ia ebroootMrtry, and are male by onr b-t workmen, ia a separate department of onr facuiry.
