BY MARCIA HOPE. . Oaly faded reel, Weathered, sad brown, and aear Treasured with arWurty rare Through many a vanished year! Oaly faded rose t A crashed and scentless thing ; Vat ! think bow it bloomed for me, Ia youth's delirious spring. And brighter bloomed the bApea That radiant summer's morn, k That war wreathed in tbe roaea'a be art, Era tbe perfumed bud had blown. Tbe rose lies withered and dead ' Aad with it tha Joya I knew. Xo apring shall wake the flower, t Jfor tbe faded I'omt rvoew I Only a faded roaa ! Treasured with uiaerty care Linked with a aweet remembrance Of happy daya tk swr t Extraordinary Brotherhood. A curiona incident took place at a rerent xecOtioc of tbe murderer Picot, at Marseilles. An unfortunate criminal ascended the scaffold, followed bj four nen, enveloped in long robea of coarse i .in-colored canvas, their features concealed by hoods of the same material, in which two Mnftll apertures were made to .liable them to see their way. The Mar illcs population make way for theui in it apectful silence, recognizing at once tt.oao men as "Hourras l'atllcson," that i, members of a brotherhood that are l.ound by oath to perform the most menial services for the poor, and especially levote themselves to attend on the con teamed and bury their remains. The evening before an execution the members of this brotherhood, sprung from every class in society, meet in conclave .ind draw lots aa to which among them nre on the following morning to take poHtitfasion of the scaffold. The executioner and his assistants having accomplished their bloody work, retire immeliately. The prior of the community I'.mt recites the words, " There is no Jonger a criminal here, the mortal remains of man creaUnl in the image of od, and whom we are alout to inter." Tbe brothers respond, "Amen," undo the strap by which the body has been tound, place it on a wiile cloth, join the head to the trunk, and having made a deep bed of bran and straw, proceed to new up the corners of the winding sheet, and place the body in the bier they have brought for the purpose. They then carry it to the cemetery, where the almoner, whose oflcc it Las been to attend the criminal in his last moments, reads the service of the dead. General de Damas, Peer of France, and Minister of War during the Restoation, was one of the confraternity, and his fctall in their chapel happened to be next to that of Father Jerome, a poor street-crossing sweeper. The vow is often made during a term of peculiar affliction, or at a moment of immineut danger. Once made, however, it is religiously kept. How to Quiet an Audience. When Madame Boisgontier, thirty years ago, was playing an engagement at the Follies Dramatiques, she confessed to having had the very bad habit of keeping the stage waiting. One evening, after having been repeatedly called without effect, the manager burst into her dressing-room, apoplectic with passion, r " Mademoiselle Boisgontier, you are laughing at the audience!" "And why not? they are laughing at me." " You are not ready. What is to be done "Throw that cap," pointing to a widewake which he held in his hand, "into the gallery; there will be a fight, and that will occupy them for a time." The cap of discord was thrown, and produced its effect Two minutes were gained, but still Boisgontier was not ready. 44 Boisgontier, this is intolerable. Only Hsten to the Voice pf the public. It's worse than' any manages iu at feeding time. ' They're tearing up the benches " Nonsense! Send out for a franc's worts of apples, and pelt the pit I'll raJ 'or tleIn.',,' It was en inspiration. The apples produced the effect together with some bruises, and were devoured on the spot. An tbe last morsel dissappeared, Boisgontier, radiant with beauty, made her tftt amidst the plaudits of a delighted liOCM. - Coel is 20 a tun in Chicago.
, . , The First Wig. , , . , St. Louis lost his hair in Palestine, and when Queen Bianca saw him thus denuded she was sorely vexed. However, she bethought herself of a remedy, which was to cut T-a lock from the head of every courtier; these he sewed carefully together, and thus created the first wig! The effect is certainly very droll at this time, when one sees bonnets exhibited in the windows, with a big bunch of hair behind, a if there was an honest head within. In a German paper of recent date is given an account of tbe trade which has sprung up in Denmark and Sweeden in the matter of hair. The peasants are very poor, but have a profusion of fine hair, which is very valuable in certain quarters where art balances the deficiencies of nature. The agents for the trade which has arisen in consequence of this supply and "demand," tempt the simple peasants in the following manner: They take the opportunity of appearing at the cottages when tbe husband and brothers are abent. They have with them a bale of tempting goods, and often a beautiful head of hair is exchanged for a couple of Indian silk handkerchiefs. The hair thus collected ha to go through five or six preparations before it is Ct for the head of fashion. To produce the undulating lines so much admired, it is rolled round little sticks, 'and boiled in a cauldron. The hair barjve&t, in these countries, however, is likeiy to become scanty, for men object to marry the girls w ith cropped heads, or ."short silks,' as they term it; and those who are still willing to be shorn of their locks hold out for ready money, and will . io longer-barter tbem for j'ellow handkerchiefs.
Important. Bells will prevent the depredations of dogs among sheep. A dog that knows enough to kill sheep, also knows enough to be still and sly about it. The great noise caused by a number of bells, makes him fear for , his safety, and ie leaves without doing rny damage. The bells would also j bring the friends of the sheep to their j rescue. A dozen bells in a flock of fifty j or seventy-five sheep would be ample. , In a flock of twenty sheep, half of them ' should wear bells. Bells will protect r your woolly herds. Atner. Agri. Tub Amount or his Bill. TheConti nental folks a day or two since, hearing of the whereabouts of a guest who had decamped without going through the usual formality of pay ins: his bill, sent his a note: "Mr. : Dear Sir, Will yon send the amount of your bill and oblige," etc. To which the delinquent made answer: "The amount of my bill is sO.G:2. Yours respectfully." Ex. jt-tT The French "dead-head" system has reached perfection. At a recent exhibition by the Davenports in Paris, eighty free tickets were distributed. A row broke up the exhibition, and the money was returned at the door. The receipts not holding out to pay all the audience, it was found at the end of the entertainment that seventy out of eighty had taken ttie ten francs return money offered at the door. Pout. Not a Bene. A number of tourists, w hen they alight at an inn in the Highlands, are in the practice of scratching their names, Ac, on the winajw glass. A elioi t time iuce, one of a party of four had written his own name and the nauies of his three companions, with the month and year in which they made their isit. Immediately under their names, and in quite a different hand ( evidently by some wag, ) is inscribed : "JVy.i Bent. The whole of the above were hanged for iheep stealing." Thk most extraordinary instance of patience on record, in modern times, is that of an Illinois judge, who listened silently for two days while a couple of wordy attorneys contended about the construction of an act of the Legislature, and then ended the controversy by quiet ly remarking: "Gentlemen, the law is repealed." . At best, life is not very long. A few more smiles, a few more tears, some pleasure, much pain, sunshine and songs, clouds and darkness, hasty greetings, abrupt farewells then the scene will close, and the injurer and the injured will pass away. Is it worth while to hate each other? i&A story in illustrating t'ae cost of amateur farming, is tolJ of a retire.l merchant, who hafl a farm on Long j IelanJ. with all the ruodorn inventions, i and fancy stock of all kinds. After! showing a fHen1 over the premise, one j ttay, lie invited him into the house. "lirown," said he, "300 have seen tlie lest farm in the State: have milk or champagne. Take your choice they tost the same." XWh? cannot two slender persons ever become greav friotds? Because ther will lwav be slight acquaintance. m-r TT-. I.
