Thursday, October 19, 1865. Advance in Paper. We aro not surprised to learn that news paper Las advanced again in the East, followed by ft necessary ri3e in the West. The pretense at the East is, that the streams are low, and do not famish enough naw to run more than Lalf the time; the trite freasou is that there is a combination amoncr thern that enables them to make their own terras and any profit they choose. , The duty on paper is s high that manufacturers can make 100 per cent, on the the entire cost, of production, without any fear of comjiCtition from abroad. It is not merely prohibitory but is ten timo what it nel be. A bill will before Congress last winter, that would hr remedied this, if properly acted upon, 1 waa hoped for a time that jutio would b done, but the paper men lavished money freely, as they could afford to d, ar.d the lobby members carriel the day. If niaunfocturers would be content with fair profit, which they would be sure of if the tariff would be reduced to ; per cent, publishers would not suffer as they are now doinpr, bnt could reduce the present rates of subscription. As it is, it cannot be thought of. ' We are now compelled to pay for blank paper, one-third of the amount we pet for the printed abei-t after all the labor is put upon it. Our iucrwine of price is nowhere near that of the dailies, which now cost Just double the old rates. H'e hope this crying evil, in which every person is interested, from the school boy to the old man whose work is done, will Lo remedied the coining winter, but in the meantime, we need all the new culi subscribers you can give us. A gentleman who was present at the lato great convocation of Odd Fellows in Haltimore relates tons an affecting scene that took place in the .Grand Lodge of the LT. S. The diflereut States were called upon for their dues to the Grand Lodge, when, one by one, the representative from Southern lodges t up and confessed their inability to pay the amount assessed against them, their treasuries being empty ami the members of the subordinate lodges unable, at present, to replenish t.hein. After the roll had been called, n representative from the North moved that the dues of the Southern Lodges be remitted. This called forth general remarks from the ! Northern members, who concurred in j - the-rrrrrtion, and expressed great joy at j meeting the Southern brethren and deep j sympathy at the misfortunes which had i overtaken them. The vote being taken j on the question it was unanimously j adopted, after which a member of South- j em representative arose anvl tnanKeil ' the Grand Lodge for their kindness and the sympathy manifested in their be- . half. Some were so much affected that i4 hey could not give expression to their a rords. Tears were freelj shed, and a V icene of congratulation and hnd shakJJ ng ensued, amid which the Grand Lodge I adjourned till next dHy. A WORD ON CLOCKS. i Ingeniom men of all ages, from Archi- j uicdes, 200 years 11. C, to Wallingford. at. the commencement of the fourteenth century, have been cited as inventors of the clock. jrown in a Garden. I. BJT" ''sited two gardens in Joliett, 111., and writes to the Chicago Tribune what he saw in them. In the garden belonging to Hon. S. K. Casey, of Joliett, a spree 30 by 75 feet, containing 250 square yards, is devoted to cabbage. Two kinds are grown in this miniature patch, ("marble head" inrt "cannon ball,) the results "are 'ateady marvelous. They are very solid, ind many of them are one foot and four inches in diameter, having yet Tieariy two months of growth before the heavy frd'sta of November. The average weight of each cabbage,' when fully grown, is 40 pounds, and if we reckon II square, feet to each head,' an acre will -'yield 4,50 cabbages, and the average weight 40 pounds', per head, will give 463,fiOO pounds per acre. If they are planted giving 4 feet square to euch head(and this is the best plan,) the number of heals per acre will be -J., 722, which will give a still greater weight to each Load, the range being from 30 to 00 pounds each. But the first upposition it would require 10 freight cars, carrying ten tons, to transport the yield of one acre of such enormous growth to Chicago, and, at 20 cents per head, or one half cent per pound, the value of the crop would be 8970. In a n eiffh boring garden, belonng

At the end of the house, trained up against the siding in the same manner, is a single 'I.sahella vine, which contains to day 000 clusters of grapes. Upon a trellis near by is ano'her vine- '-Isabella" containing 40y clusters, 100 hav ing been removed. One half of the entire number of cluster will average lii'ty grapes each, and .!!! U'oi.rli rrt'l I'll- til V fW!- O&f.U tlll'CC ! clusters weigh a pound, making the this tors from the three vines nwrly 0 lbs, of rich lucious fruit. In market such grapes sell readily for 25 cents per pound, and the value of the crop of the three vines this year is 8200. The space required for the proper growth and development of a single vine is at least 10 , square feet, 5 by 18. One acre will allow 1,000 . such spaces, and will grow 1,000 vines. The result of one aero, according to this, which is a fair estimate, us ulmost incredible and yet "seeing U believing." An acre will therefore, produce, with the same care and sit the same rate, over "J'i'i.OUO pounds of gritpes. If one-tilth of this amount is the actual yield, or, if we give to each viuu 200 vjuure feet to admit of light, air, eto., tho result would be 40,000 pounds per acre, or 10,000 as tho value of the crop. A Beautiful Deed. A yni'Md ollicer was connected with Sheridan's brigade. It was in one of those force I marches when they had driven back the enemy and had been iu the saddle for several consecutive days and nights, that this trooper availed himself of a temporary halt, tr blip from his saddle and stretch himself upon the turf his horse, meanwhile, browsing in the immediate vicinity. lie ha. I slept for some little time, when he was siuldenlv awakened by the frantic pawing f his horse at his side. Fatigued by his long ride, lie did not rouse at once, but lay in that partially conscious state which so frequently attends great physical prostration. Soon, however, the faithful animal perceiving that its efforts had failed to accomplish their object, licked his face, and placing its mouth close to his ear uttered a loud snort. .Now thoroughly awake, he sprang up, and as the horse "turned for him to mount, he saw for the first time that his comrades had all disappeared, and that the enemy were coming down upon him at full gallop. Once mounted, tho faithful boast bore him with the spewd of th wind safely from the danger and soon placed him among his companions. "Thus,'' he - art dad with emotion, "the noble fellow saved ine frotu capitivity. and perhaps fro. a death."; Journal of Commerce. Bad Heart from a Sora Head. Colonel Forney says he cannot, for the life of him, tell when and why Montgomery Dlair took offense at Governor Reward, since the Postmaster General always professed the liveliest friendship for the Premier. liut Thurlow . Mr. Hlair says that Mr. Seward could have, made him Chief Justice, but did not, and hence these false assertions, and hence these tirades of personal abuse." And that's what's the matter with "the familv" now. W There is a boy living in Sharps ville, in this county, who hat fifteen brothers and sisters. . lie has two brother liills, who are no connection; two sister Sarahs, and they are no kin; two brother Georges, who are cousins, one of them now dcaii, two sister Susans, who are also cousins, and two brother Johns, a-.idthey are cousins; still he has neither brother nor sister.
