THE II1CKSITE YEARLY MEETING.
En. Palladium: Thinking some of your readers might be interested by a notice of the convocation of thia branch of the Society of Friends, at Richmond, Ind., I Uke the liberty of occupying a small portion of your space fur that purpose. The meeting for public worship was held in the new meeting boas on the 21th feast., aod was pretty largely attended by a mixed company. The first haor of the meeting was somewhat dull and uninteresting. A few short exhortations were given by both sexes. Near the close of the meeting, a female minister from Pennsylvania be id forth for half an hour in a strain of some eloquence, ia discoursi- gfna practical Christianity, and afterward appeared in an appropriate prayer, wits a brief communication from another female, epos's in much earnestness and feeling. She bad bad a birthright in the Soc ety expressed much interest in theduwn-trodden and in the reconstruction of oar Government. - fj; Tie Ktw Home , Is a substantial brick, built ia modern style, aad is capable of seating about 2,000 persons. The main en trance ia on the south, leading into an ante or reeeptKin room. The men occupy one side and the women the otber. The partition arrangement is so construe- , ted that, when raised and lowered, it places the whole audience together. The wbol style and finish of the edifice is neat and appropriate, and reflects much cred it on the energy and business tact of the Managing Committee. This, no doubt is the neatest and most substantia meeting house in the West. It is located in the eastern and improving p rts of the city, near the present corporate limits. It might not ba amisa to direct the reader a number of years back in the history of the Friends. Soon after Uis termination of the Indian wars in 1812 '13, emigration became rapid into eastern Indiana, and western Ohio. Among these, the Friends, who bad lired in Slave and Eastern States, settled in the West. A boat toe year Id 20 the Society became numerous enough to establish s Yearly Meeting at Whitewater. In 1420 a large brick house was built. Tbe Society appeared prosperous for a number of years after. But, unhappily, a schism took place ia a few years after the Yearly Meeting House was built. A portion of the Society, who endorsed Elias flicks, a prominent minister in tbe Society, separated from their brethren, bout the yesr 1827, and erected a meeting bouse In the northern part of Richmond, near the Depot. Tbeae buildings bad rather an unsightly appearance, and were, no doubt, often taken by strangers for workshops. But thst branch of the Society held their (nestings therein for 35 years ami until tbe present yesr. 1 he writer has a recollection that in the Society's palmiest days their meetings were numerously attended. Some seekers and outsiders anticipated some new formula in doctrines snd disciplinary arrange ments. After a time, when they began to reconstruct, it adopted the stereotyped usages hence those wbo expected some progression gradually withdrew their presence. "All soots' glory decline in the naturat order of things." Tbe spirit hss a resurrection but not the form. Hence the noble principles maintained by the Friends tare taken root in other sects, snd hare been an incalculable benefit in the great struggle which hss culminated in universal freedom. GEO. In the lower grades llaouMaolb aamandatad. To rn.i ly h primary scholars have been divided into two classes, t each class being allowed to remain in school only half day, nna in the forenoon, the other in the afternoon. There are several reasons why this arrangement should be made : 1st. In this way we can accommodate nearly double the number of children. 2d. The rooms will not be as much crowded. 3d. The classes can be more closely graded and thus they will be able to advance more rapidly. 4th. The Teacher can give the one gratia her nwiividrd attention. 5th. Each child will recite just as often and just as long as though it should rem lin in scheool all day . ntb. Many of our leading Educators believe that it is better for smalt children, both physically and mentally, that they be confined to the school room only three or four hours per day. Tth. Every km-IM person would rather have his child remain in school only half a day under the circumstances, than to have it remain a icAofe day, when his neighbor's child is deprived of school privileges altogether. Anyone wishing to see the Superintendent on matters connected with the School, will fin 1 him in his lo nn, No. T, Public School Building, from 8.30 til; 9 o'clock each morning. It having come to our knowledge that imitations of the American Watch have been put upon tbe market in great number, calculated by their utter worthlessness to injure the reputation of our genuine products, to protect our own interests and the public from imposition, we again publish the trade marks by which our Watches may invariably be known. We manufacture four styles of Watches. The First has the name "AMERICAN WATCH CO., Waltham, Mass,' engraved on the inside plate. Tbe Second has the nsme "APPLETO.V, TRACY A CO., Waltham, Mas. engraved ou the inside plate. Tbe Third has the name 'P. S. BARLETT, Wakbarn, Mass.," engraved on tbe inside plate. AH the above styles have the name American Watch Co. painted on the dial, ard are warranted in every respect. The ForRTH has the name WM. ELLERY, Boston, Mass.," engraved on tbe inside plate, and is not named on the dial. And the above described watches are made of various sizes, and are sold in gold or silver cases, as may be required. It ishardly possible far us to accurately describe tbe numerous imitations k which w have alluded. They are usually inscribed with the names so nearly approaching our own as to escape tbe observation of tbe nnacrnstomed buyer. Some are represented as made by the '-Union Watch Co., of Boston, Mass," no such company existing. Some are named the "Soldier's Watch,' to be sold as our Fourth or Wm. llerv style, asnally known as the "Soldier's Watch." Others a pa named the Apple ton Watch Co. ; " others tha "P. S. It is a Home Company; all Premiems are kept aod paid out here, instead of being sent to Eastern Cities. More than $500,000 annually, is paid by the State of Indiana, to Foreign Insurance Companies, alt of which might be kept at home, by insuring in Home Companies. 2. The Cash Capital is J100.000, anl the Stockholders are responsible to the insured forlGQ.OOO more, making tbe iam of 200,00, pledged for the payment of losses. 3. As this Company confines its operations chiefly to a few counties in Eastern Indiana, and to Fire Insurance exclusively, and avoids specially hazardous risks ; and as Eastern Companies of larger capital extend their risks all over the Union, and take Urge spe
cially hazardous risks ; it is relatively stronger and more reliable than any of tbem. 4. United States Bonds are deposited b? this Company with the Auditor of State to secure the psvrm-nt of losses. Foreign Companies have not a single dol lar deposited with the Auditor. Their capital is all out of the State ours is at home, subject to all de mands upon it. 5. Risks are taken at as low rates, and on as favor able terms, as by any otber responsible Firelnsurance rompjnr. Losses will be adjusted and paid promptly and liberality and good faith observed towards all and as evidence of thus, it is sufficient to sUU', that the Stockholders are known throughout Eastern Indiana to be men of the highest responsibility and integrity.
