Would it not be well to pay more at tention to this home market, to be built i up by the increase ami prosperity oft home manufactures. Let every farmer remember one important fact. The decrease of our home market makes us more dependent on the changes often aevere and ruinous in litaut foreign, markets, and thexo changes affect and govern now the prices here. Let wheat in Liverpool f.ill sixpence on the bushel, and the Wisconsin farmer feels it in three weeks. The lesson is plain. Foster our home industry, lot manufacturers. West and East, grow and thrive. Let our market within ourselves bo our fiit consideration, and then send abroad such a surplus as we tdiall doubtless have, and other countries tuay need. Budding. Downing says the "proper season for ! budding io from the first of duly to the middle of September, the ditferent trees coining into sason as follows: riunis, (.'licrrie. Apricots on l'lums. Apricots, ! l'ears. Apples, Quinces, Nectarines and . IVaehes. Trees of considerable sie will ' reiuire bmlding earlier than the younger eccilling stocks; but the operation isal- , ways, and only performed when the bark f of the stock or parts, separate freely from ! the wood, and when the buds of the cur- 1 rent year's growth are somewhat plump, 1 and the young wood is growing firm. J Young stock iu the nursery, if thrifty, ! are usually planted out in rows in the spring, and budded the sa:uc summer or nutuuui. ! An Isoian's IrK a or Machinery. ' Seme chiefs of Canadian Indians, a few I day a ago, saw a WheelerA Wilson's Sew- ' ing machine in operation for the first! time. One old chief, with a lamp, watched tho motion beneath the table, and tho rest kept their 03 0s fixed upon it above, to see there were no "white lies" about it. They then compared notes, threw themselves on the Moor, and rolled about laughing ami t rowing out, in Indian, the "Sewing Spirit." They had no idea it was the spirit of man's intelligence which put it in such successful motion. 1 XT Dr. Hartman.of West Chester.! Pa., is raising seven or eight hundred; Chinese silk worms, which have been in- ' troduccd into the United Slates from France, where they are. propagated from ' China. They feed on the ordinary ailan- ' thus, or Chinese suuiav, as w ell as on the 1 native eumao. These arc the first spevi- i mens ever In Chester county, and Doctor Hartman proposes to distribute the co- ! coons to such persons as are interested j in the experiment of silk growing. Tho silk produced by this worm is of line lustre and qualitr. Selecting Seed Corn. -
We "hope that' every Tarmer will go through his corn field so soon as the grain is rijc, and select eed fox another year. It i bkA enly and wasteful to defer this duty till it is needed to put intof the ground, and then 6elect iti om acribi The signs of good seed are not so apparent in the hl-ap that ha3 been stored through the -Winter, as they are while the ears are hanging to the stalk in the field, liy sorting from the crib, the following risks are run : " L That the seed will not all be sound, and there will be more or less failure in sprouting. ' 1. That the most productive seed will not be selected, because the signs do not all appear. " On the contrary, the advantages of selecting in the field are as follows: 1. Those stalks which bear two good ears, without any very great advantages of location or culture, than the other stalks, are the ones to select from, be-' cause the tendency of' such is to the greatest possible production. 2. Those stalks which are thick, strong and set large ear low down, undoubtedly have a greater tendency to produce grain, than those which run up to a great height before shooting the ears ; hence, seed taken from such will be apt to produce a feirnilar growth, give greater strength for ktanding against the winds, an'! yield more good grain in proportion to the growth. 3. The ears so selected can be tied together by the husks, hung up in the barn loft, and in the spring will be perfectly dry and sound, and the germination will be perfect. 4. It is apparent, therefore, that an immense saving can be made by taking this precaution in selecting seed. As there is a choice in animals of the same breed and raised, apparently, under the same circumstances, so there is a choice that can advantageously be made in seed corn. It is not necessary to enumerate the items of profit growing out of care in this matter. All farmers know the advantage of having their corn come up promptly, and the loss that follows replanting besides the additional lalor re quired ; and most farmers are doubtlessly aware that seed which sprouts vigorously gives the oorn a strong growing tendency at the start, and increases the amount of the crop. A word to the prudent on this subject is enough. Hogs in Apple Orchards. Nobody semis such apples to market as my neighbor John Jones. lie always has apples to sell, and gets the highest prices. Folks prefer large apples ; and such are always packed in Jacob's barrels. You might search, them with a caudle, and not find a knotty fruit or a worm hole. Such Rhode Island Greenings and Koxberry Russetts I have never met with in the old States. They are as handsome as any thing in the virgin soil of the AV est. I was going by Jacob's orchard last summer, and I had the curiosity to call iiitd examine for myself. Says I, "Neighbor, what is there iu your soil makes such smooth, large apples? They area third bigger than any lean get, and my trees look ns well as yours." "The secret is not in the soil," John replied, with a twinkle in his eye, "but on it. Io you see those grunters there? My pork brings me a fifty cents a pound eight in flt sh, and the lvst in fruit. I begun to pasture ten years ago with hogs, and since that time, I have hail no trouble with wormy fruit. Apples, ns a general thing, don't fall from the tree unless something is the matter with t hum. The apple w orm and curculio lay their eggs iu the fruit, and the apple drops early. The pigs devour the apples, and by September every unsound apple is gone, and I have nothing but fair fruit left. The crop of insects for the next year id destroyed by the pigs. They root around under the trees, keep the soil loo.so, manure the land some, ami work over what manure I spread. The ripples help the pigs and the pigs help the apples." I saw John's secret at once, ami have profited by it. 1 never had so few insects as this spring, and I have given the pigs credit for it. In turning the orchard into a pasture, put iu pigs not land pikes, with snouts like levers. You might lose trees as well as insects in that ease. Iut well-bred animals with judicious snouts, that will root in a subUuod and ehristian like manner. Amer. Agriculturalist. Xe Among the recent scientific discoveries in France may be mentioned a method invented by M. Xeant for keeping afloat a vessel about to sink, and putting out any fires that may happen t break out on board. His plan is to attach a certain number of balloons made of india rubber, and inflated with air. to the sides of the sinking vessel. M. C'liattenmann proposes to render externally incombustible by whitewashing the wood wfth t hloride of lime. This, he thinks, would prevent the rapid propagation of the flames, and allow sulliciint time to extinguish them. A French chemist asserts that if tea be ground like coffee, before hot water is i put upon it, it will ield double the j amount of exhilirating qualities. Anoth- i cr w riter says that if a piece of lump sngar, the sie of a walnut, is put into the ' tea-pot. it will make the tea infuse in one t half the time. i ) 1 KACUVS U ITHOir TONKS. liiO . a- j tion newspaper says : "Turn the top of I the trco down, cut off the ends, stick j them iuto tho ground, snd f.istcn so with j stakes; in a year or two these tops wiil take roof, and when well rooted, cut the . .t. . - . i . .i iTuncues connecting inese reversed ana rooted branches with the tree proper, and this reversed peach tree will produce fine peaches without stones." It is reported that the Wisconsin river t is a perrect mass of sawed lumber. Millions of feet are lying there with no immediate prospect of getting out. and the lumbermen feel discouraged, and talk of avoiding the trouble hereafter by artificial help, such as making slack water improvements. XV A man in. Illinois Las invented a horse shce r shoes which tteedj no nails and which, after beiBjj fitted, can be taken off and put on Vy anv one. It is j proUWrm slipper. ,
