RICHMOND, INDi JUNE 29. 1865. Anecdote of Dr. Nott. On an eveuiog preceding Tba iksgiring. many yer ago, two stiwleftu left the OolJege with the most foul intent af procuring mne of the Doctor fine, fat ehtckens, that roosted on tree adjoining txim hen.'. When they arrived at the spot, cne ascended the tree while the other stood with the beg ready to receive the plunder. It so happen lei that the Doctor himnelf had just left the house, wiih a iew to secure the same ehickens for his Thankgiiug dinner. The rogue under the tree, bearing some one approaching, iinmeJiatsIy ciept awaj without notifying Lis companion among the branches. - The Doctor came up silently, and wan Imtuedjat el sajuted ft em abvteVas follow; Afe y i ready t" - -' ' - ' - '--"Yea," oned the doctor, dissembling his voice luucb as pwablsThe other imim fiaiefy lying his hands on the bid rooster, exclaimed : "Here Is old Prex, will yea hare Mm ? "Pass Lira along'' was the reply, and he was soon in the Doctor's bag. ' Here's mar in I'rex," aid the unconscious student, grabbing a tine el l hen, " will have htr?" "Yes,' said the doctor. 'Here's son John, will yoa have him?" "Yes,'' again responded the Doctor. "Here's daughter Sal, have her?" and soon until he hr.d gone regularly through with the Doctor's family. The old man then walked off with the plun der in one direction, while the htudsnt, well satisfied with the night's woik came dow n and Btreaked for the College. Great was his astonishment to learn from hi coinpuiiiuo tint he had not got any chicken, if he gave them to any one it must hare been Dr. Nott. Expulsion,, fine and disgrace wero uppermost in their thoughts until the next forenoon, when both received a polite invitation from their President, requesting the presence of their company to a 'X'hanagiving dinner. To decline was iiu possible, so with hearts full of anxiety (or the result they wended their wsy to the bouse where they were pleasantly received by the old gentleujau, and with a large party were soon seated around the festive board. After asking a bles-ing, the Doctor rose fro n his seat, and, taking the carving knife, turned with a smile to the rogues and said: " Young gentlemen, here's oil Prex, mirm I'rex, son John and daughter S:il," at the same time touching auci-esaively the respective chickens: "to which will you be helped?" The mortilicatiori of the iUudouU may bo im agined. A Sensible Rapper. The editor of the I'ahncr Journal hits horn niixtnfT with ft circle of nippers, ami mnle rt dollar ami a half out of the operation, as follows: "We accented an invitation to attend a sitting of a circle of spirittialints the other evening, and were not ii little surprised when the following message was pellet! out to one of the c ompany, "l'sty the Printer!" It waa subsequently explained through a medium, that the liti s sage was from the spirit of a delinquent subscriber who owed ua one "dollar and fifty cents. The friends of the departed paid us the money without hesitation, and the joy of a relieved 'spirit' was manifested by raps, tipping the table, Ac. . That was a sensible rapper, and one who would obtain many t,pulrs" from the editors would ho but rap some of the many dollars due, into the editor's pock eta. There is a wide field for him to rap tn, anil a first rate per cent, on the rapt t&l invested is warranted. How to "Go It." ;' Go it strong in yonr praise of the absent. Sotno of it will be sure to get abroad. Go it strong when yon make love to a pretty widow. More people have erred by too little than too much in this particular. Go to it strong w hen you take up contributions for charitable purposes. It will pay. Go it strong when you make a public speech. Nine people ont of ten never take allusions unless it cuts like a short handed whip or a rhinoceros cowhide. lo it stroug when you advertise Dusiness is like architecture its best supporters are full colutuua. ' Jtt? A sailor, the other day, while explaining the third figure of the quadrille to his messmate, thus described it Said he: "You first heave ahead, ami pass your adversary's yard arm, regain your bertu on the otuer tack in the same order, take3our station with yonr partner iu line, back and till, and then fall on your heel, and bring up with your partner, she then mautcuvres ahead, otf alongside or you; then xnaee sail m company with her uutil nearly astern of the other line, make a stern board, eat her otf to shift for her self, regain your place the best way vou can, and let go your anchor." A Cask of Tuck Hkuoism. The Boston Traveller says that a miller's dog having broken his chain, he ordered his maid to tie him up. She was attacked and bitten. On hearing her cries the miller and his people ran to her assistance. "Keep olTT sal I she : 4 the dog is mad. I am already bitten, and must chain him up alone." Notwithstanding his biting she did not let him go, but chained him, and then retired to her chamber, and with herself to die. , Hydrophobia soon broke ont, and she died iu a few dars. President Johnson s plan of reconstruction, while it denies the right of secession, at the earoc time holds the State m within the powerof the National Govmment as to compel it to resolve into a loyal State or remain under National roiliUtry control. This ouijht to strike "Democrats" as the very mildest possible form of "TruteftnJint State Sovereignty." If there is anything consoling in it to "Democrats," ther are welcome to all they otw get of it- - The whole thing looks to os like an even balance between Mr. Snraner's theory and the Copperhead rebel dogma ; of State , sovereignty. Dayton Journal.

Delirium Tremens. BT ntK9. TITTLE OF CRAWFORDSTILLI. Let all young men, moderate drinkers, read the following, and learn : It has sometimes oecured to me that the exhibitions of agony we sometimes see in persons tortured by delirum tremens, should be interpreted not so much as the results of bodily disease as the signs of the capacities both of body and soul especially the latter for 6rontaneons self-organizing sufferings. I saw a man once in this condition. He was a man of great strength, and had he been temperate he might have lived a century. There seemed no part of him unsouud ; and as if to aid him in his defiance of the dreaded delirium, he had an immense chest. He would drink great draughts of rum and not stagger. He had been warned of his danger, but refused to hear the warning. At last his destruction came as with the whirlwind. DistreHS and anguish came upon him. All anodynes were powerless to quiet his nerves ; and so dreadful was his suffering that it could have scarcely been tortured with fire. The reptiles and fiends which crawled over him and mocked him, to him seemed real. At last he rose in his bed with a terrific shriek and fell back dead. His last expression was, "I see the deTil ! His boon companions were frightened away from his bedside, and not one of them had courage to see him buried. Now, shall we call this disease and shattered nerves ? or shall we atlirm that such a man shows how much material there is in his body and soul with which to kindle and feed suiTering? Impart to such a man immortality, at d what less than hell have you for hiui ? I believe there is a place called hell, and such facts as I have just referred to, make me sure that there is a condition of being in a sinner "let alone" of God's mercy, which may aptly be called hell also.

How Dogs Get Mad. Nine tenths of the ieoplc are in ignorance in regard to the premonition of madness in dogs. One of the earliest signs of madness in dogs, and one which would always arouse attention on the part of those in charge of dogs, is a snllenncss combined with fidgetiness. When it means rabies ( madness ) the dog retires to his bed for several hours, and may be seen curled tip, his faeeburied betw een his paws and breast. He show s no disposition to bite, and will answer slowly and sullenly. After a while he becomes restless, seekingout new resting places, and never satisfied long with one. lie then returns to his bed, but continually shifts his posture. lie rise up and lies down again, settles his body in a variety of postures, disposes his bed with his paws, shaking it in his mouth, bringing it to a heap, on which he carefully lays his chest, and tl.cn rises up and bundles it ll ont of his kennel. If at liberty, he will seem to imagine something lost, and w ill crtgerlv search around with strange violence and indecision. That dog should be watched. If he begins to gaze strangely about him, as he lies in bed, and if his countenance is clouded and suspicious, we may be certain that madness is coming on. Taxation ok Si-huts. The Rochester Union says: " The ease of Mr. Colchester, the spiritualist, who is to bo tried at Canandaigua, promises to be quite exciting. It will be remem? c.-ed that the United States Commissi. :u-r contends that Colchester should take out a juggler's license, while Colchester i isists that his operations are the workings of spirits. I'rofessor Anderson, the magician, has been summoned :is a witness for the'Govcrnuient'i to show that he perfo; ms the same things done by Col Chester. Several persons from this citv have been suhpiviaed." The New York Herald,j6f the lilst, says, "As this case will doubtless bring the spirits to the rescue of Colchester, or leave him to the fate of a juggler, we shall, if in season, have a competent reporter on the spot to communicate, through the Herald, to all the spirits and to the world at large the proceedings and expected astounding developments of this tunny trial. Jt& The Court of Appeals in Ken tucky, (the highest Court in the State) has just decided that tiie act of Congress making greenbacks a legal tender, is unconstitutional, and as a necessary result any creditor of the State can demand gold and silver in payment of his debt.
