Grant, agreeing with him about' eTerything, carrying out Iu"pUns with great - energy and vigor, accepting Lis judgment npon every disputed point, and initiating that bis wishes shall be eon Mil ted in all things that affect the army that is to say, tlie Government. It is not generally know, however, that . Gen. Grant once- Karey fiod Ir Stanton," and 'tht this accounts for the phenomena' which .'h4 so astonished the public f As a matter of history we will give the anecdote. When. Geo. Grant was about to leave WusIiington.tO' nter Ml4" that tmblime campaign which began with the battle of th - wilderness, and ended .with the . downfall of tho rebellion, he called upon . Secretary Stanton to say good bye. Tho Secretary was anxiously awaiting hina. -During the two and . half years that President Lincoln and ' Secietary , Stanton hail managed the Eastern armies, lt was tL first point in their pjan to keep Washington heavily garrisoned with troops. Large bodies of men were stationed in fortifications around -the cit-,
and other larcre bodies were kept with hi . ' in supporting distance. Now that Grant had come into power Stanton wanted to see" that the defense, of Washington was not overlooked. Accordingly, after a few preliminaries, the Secretary re marked : . - "Well, General, I suppose you have left us enough men to strongly garrison . th forta ?' 'No.'' said Grant, coolh. "I can't dol
that." 'Why not?" cried Stanton, jumping nervously about; why not? why not?" "Ilccauso I have already sent the men to tho front," repliecj Grant, cajrnpy. v , That won't do," cried Stanton, more nervous than before-., "It's contrary to my plans. I can't allow it. I'll order the men back." . 'I shall need the men there," answerGrant, and you can't order 'them back." Why not?" inquired Stanton again. 'Why not? why not?" 'I believe that I rank the Secretary in this matter," was the quiet reply. 'Very,' well, V said Stauton, a little warmly, ""We'll see tOQ" president about that I'll hartt to take you to the l'reaident" That's right," politely observed Grant; "the President ranks us both." Arriving at the White House, the Gcncral and Secretary asked to see the I'res4 - ident upon important business, and in a ' few moments the good natured face of Mr. Lincoln appeared- . "Well gen4inen," saul the President, with a genial smile, what do you want with mc ?" "General," said Stanton, stiflj', "state your case." - ! have no eaae " leZ stati,'? --..Grant said nothing; the President J listened vry attentively. .When Stanton n had concluded, the President crossed - - his legs, rested his elbow on LU knee, twinkled his eyes quaintly, nnd said : 'Now, Secretary, you know we have been trying ' to manage 'the5 army for two3ears and a half, and you know we ' haven't done much with it We sent over the mountains And brought Mister Grant as Mrs. Grant calls him to manage it for us, and now I guess we had better let Mister Grant have his own )" ....... From this decision there was no appeal. Nobody ranked the President So Gen. Grant went off with the army, and Secretary Stanton went back to his office. That application of Grant's Rarey like tactics made Stanton the hardest working Secretary and one of tire most gentlemanly oflkials in Wash-

Nitro-Grycerine. This is Uie name of a new explosive agent, of which mention begins to be made in foreign papers. It first made itself known, as such inventions usually do, by killing several persons who were experimenting upon it in a laboratory at Stockholm. The original discoverer, nothing daunted, pursued the even tenor of his inquiries into the new compound, and at last has brought it to snch perfection that, according to a letter in a recent London paper, it is cow used in blasting out the railway tunnel under Stockholm. No accident has occurred since its introduction to practical use, and the inventor claims that it can be used with comparative safety' iu mining and other operations. The substance is a liquid, and is said to have fifty times the explosive power of gunpowder. No account of its manufacture or its chemical characteristics is given ; probably because the inventor prefers to keep-his own secret The discovery is an interesting one because every new discovery in the realm of science is interesting but it hardly seems deserving of the importance which is ascribed to it by foreign journals. Gunpowder and gun-cotton arc sufficiently destructive for every purpose of war or peace, and have the merit of being far safer than any of the other nitrous compounds, .which give additional explosive power, it is true, but at the expense of additional risks. Chloride of nitrogen, iodide of nitrogen, nitride of silver, and other fulminrnting TT"ticrm, re agents of destruction far more terrible than common - gunpowder, but they are apt to be decomposed by the slightest blow or jar, ignition not being necessary to touch ' them off, and are therefore full of danger to persons handling them even with the . utmost care. Nitro glycerine will proba- , bly be found to come under the same head of unstable and unsafe compounds. Glycerine, the article which is wrested to this strange use, is of itself one of the most harmless and useful substances. It is a transparent, sweetish, odorless sirup; the base, or essential principle of all animal f its. It has been but a bhort time known, but is already applied to : many uses much more beneficent and Important than that of supplanting gunpowder. As a vehicle for the administration of disagreeable medicines, it is unequalled. The most odious drugs seem to lose thc-ir taste when dissolved in glycerine. With either and naptha it possesses the property of dissolving guttapercha. Among the newest applications of glycerine is that of its employment in certain branches of photography. It has already gained a reputation for itself as an ingredient in cosmetics and perfumes. It is made chiefly from the mother liquor of soup factories, and affords a good illustration of the valuable uses which science may derive from suostuuees ordiuarily rejected as waste products.
Maaonto Action on the Death of President Lincoln. At the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Indiana, held last week, the following preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted: WnKKBAS, In the inscrutable providence of Almighty GoJ, Abraham Lincoln, the first citizen of the United States, by official station, the first by the rectitude of life and daily conduct, the first by his devotion to the honor, interests and integrity of the country, the first by the power and influence which he wielded with wisdom, sagacity and courage, has been stricken down by the hand of an assassin ; and WneRKAS, It is due, that this Grand Lodge, representing three hundred and twenty-eight subordinate Lodges, scattered all over the whole expanse of the State of Indiana, should give expression to their sentiments at the appalling blow, which, like a thunderbolt from a cloudless sky, struck the heart of the whole nation ; therefore, Iioltd, That we look with abhorrence on an act which took from us, and the country, which he so faithfully served, the man who, through four years of deadly strife, with au eye single to the maintenance of the Government, has guided and directed us, and who with the haven of peace and security in sight, was by a dastardly act snatched from the full fruition of his labors. 2. That we concur with the Union loving people all over the globe in the expression of regret and deep sorrow, which this event has called forth, and that we will cherish Abraham Lincoln as the great emancipator of an 'oppressed race with undj-ing affection ; trusting that history, poetry and art will unite to keep his memory creen in remembrance of virtuous men forever and ever. . 3. That a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to tho bereaved widow and family of the deseased, iu token of our heartfelt sympathy with the great loss which they and the country at large have sustained. Papers thc'Jiout the Stte of Indiana are reqtiC to publish the foregoing. The Washington correspondent of the New York Tribune, in comparing the soldierly bearing of the Eastern and Western troops, pays a high compliment to the latter. He says : "The Western men were taller, with fewer boys, and scarcely any foreigners among them. Their marching step was several inches longer, and yellow and red beard and light hair predominated. Officers of the Army of the Potomac conceded that they "marched better; that they moved with an elastic, springy, swinging step, that does not belong to Eastern boys, and their faces were more intelligent self-reliant and determined. One could not distinguish officers from men except by uniforms. Privates and officers seemed to be eqnal in manly behavior. On the other hand. Eastern troops show, ed more pure discipline and drill. There was also a marked distinction between the officers and men in point of tyspw I .,t,,.rA
From Friends lntrfUgroerr. Tuk Death or Abraham Liscols slxtkkxth psksickxt of tuk uitki States. The. wise ruler, the good man has fallen, a victim to that malignant spirit which his forbearance would have pardoned. We can scarcely conceive the vindictiveness that could plan and execute a deed of such atrocity. It was conceived without provocation and perpetrated under the extension of a clemency almost unparalleled. Such an event is truly a national calamity. Sorrow is on the faces of all, and the general expression of 'mourning attests the gratitude and affection with which Abraham Lincoln is regarded. While the oath required of our Chief Magistrate in assuming the duties of his office and his exercise of military power, are both at variance with our testimonies, we admire the wise statesmanship and the constant reference to a sense of duty which marked the decisions of our late President. Honesty of purpose and integrity of heart were universally accorded to him, and while his gentleness and courtesy to all, recommended and endeared him to the people. The clemency he so frequently exercised in the forgiveness of offenders was a reiterated attestation of the superiority of the Divine precept, "The greatest of all is charity." Even in a time of war, the principle of "peace on earth and good will to men" was often thus revived in our memory. Although the heart of the nation has been stirred, as it has seldom been before, let ns not cherish a feeling of revenge, but take heed to our lips we sin not. The future is heavily clouded, yet let ns not lose our confidence in Divine power, but reverently renew our trust, remembering that, "Behind the dim unknown Standetb God within the shadow, keeping watch above hia own."
