Richmond Horticultural Association. April 8th, 1Vi. ,.'The meeting was called to order by the President, anl the minutes of the previous meeting were read and adopted. ' Tbe Committee, to settle with Fire Company Xo. 3 for the use of the Hall, reported that they had paid $17,25, tha rent nj to the 1st of the present m nth. . The Committee on printing tlie Constituting and By-laws, vtated that ss they had made several alterations they thoiigLt it would he better to read both, which irin done. R. T. Ol II III Jt DM. 1 think It was M.iry Howitt, who sang so beautifully : God might havo fixed up tbis earth with all things necessary to our comlort, and yet Made no flowers at all." 8o he might havo made, it without any birds to stcl our berries sod cherries, and pick holes in our nicest apples and pears. Hut he has made both flower and
birds by the million, and while tbe Atheist would reprove us were we to say the former are useless, with far greater emphasis may we affirm of the latter, that they were not mvlo in Tain. Indeed it requires but little reflection to satisfy us, that, aside from the pleasure they aflord us by their gay plumige, happy
mien and cheerful songs, they really hold a high place
in the retmomy of Him whose works all rennin to be,
as when first they fell from his Omnipotent band, most
emphatically '-good."
iut before we proceed to consider our little friends
in a utilitarian point of view, we will notice a few that aflord us pleasure of a higher, if not of a more
substantial kind, We will not speak of the birds of
other land m, for tho England csn boast of its Linnet and Nightingale, and the South its .Mockingbird, """d our Bird are aome of fim r feather, and scarcely lss attractive song. We hare our Wood Rohin, or Wood Thrush, whose m.it in song must be familiar to us all. It is a ah plainly dressed bird, delighting in a thieket of under-brush near a running brook, but often frequents and builds in our orchards and hedges. As to his merits as a songster, it is enough to state
that Audubon, says, 'that among all the feathered tribe of the wood, this is my favorite." A. all timoo of the day his clear shrill musical voice may be heard, but ore especially early in the morning. Observe hirn a he perches aiming the topmost branchea of a leafless tree, and bid adieu to car and ennui, while he sing his m irning song. Raising his bead, and turning it from side to side, stretching his throat to its u' in i.it capacity, and pouring his whole soul into tho effort, for half an hour he makes the neighborhood vocul with his music. Let us now notice a bird scarcely less attractive as a songster, and of the rarest and most beautiful jlunxigo. Hi form is symmetrical, his motions
graceful and his t'ress fierv red ; except the tail, wings, high crest and blunt beak, which are a reddish brown. It is the Cardinal Urosbeak, commonly called tho Redbird. Scarcely any bird atTord me so much pleasure. I never tire admiring hi fine dress, his quick, sprightly motions, and his clear, melodious voice. A pair of
these birds built for several years successively in a cedar tree, a few feet from my verandah, and uever were denizens more welcome to my grounds. Rut a naughty cat sometimes disturbed them, and sometimes, I thiuk, a lllu Jay, and right sorry was I when Spring brought no lied Bird to my cedar tree. But here comes one of those same Blue Jays. "I am no friend of his," says one. That I can readily believe ; tho' I cannot but ad mire him, with all his oad ways ; he is sueh an independent fellow, and stays with us all winter, when most other birds have flown to other climes. I know he is accused of robbing other birds of their eggs and young, but it is said the crow takes great pleasure in robbing him nest, and so may not his mischief be the work of revenge. It h .s been said that in winter he busies himself in picking off the ej-gs of insects that are glued to the limbs of trees, Between the Jay and the Crow, there sevms to
to be anything but natural good feeling. Who has not been intensely b tercste I iu observing all the Jays in tbe neighborhood "pitching in" to the birds of ill omen. Such darting hither and thither, such incessant clattering and screaming, as are made by the assailing party, i truly amusing, while Mr. Crow can do little else thau "grin and bear it." The Jay is a beautiful and interesting bird, and with all his naughty tricks, 1 should be sorry to see the race exteruiiued.
not one) said on seeing a dandy appmachi:if : '"children, let a be serious, here comes a top," and so we might ay of this well-known bird. Without doubt be is a fine fellow so far aa dress U concerned, aad liks Saul and Dvaid "be !ay Lis thousands and tens of thousands' of our eaemies. Is be not for this ent tied to our friendship ? I know be U a th:ef of of a bird in cherry time, and sometimes spoils our nicest apple ; bat does be not more than pay for these in catching millers and curculiis? Who ha not observed him, quietly perched on the top o some
derated object, darting every now and then into the air, and quickly returning to his "base of supplies,"
and woe betide any luckless insect that ventures "within hi lines."
But there is another bird no less familiar, and tho'
plainly clad in a dress of cerulean blue, U far more
deserving of our kind regard. It was ot this bird tue
Poet sang :

" lien red glows the luaplo, so fresh and au pleasing. tUen come tUe Biueoir I, t je iierald of spring, And IiaiIs, wita fjs waroiiugs, the cuarms oi toe tea-
son." I believe the bluebird enjoys a spotleis reputation, and tiiere is such a touch ot swe.-tuess and innocence in its twittering song, that even the truant school-boy will hardly molest It. It nrght be made much more laiuiliarabout our houses, if we woull provide boxes lor it to build in. Few birds show a .great -r attachment for their mites. A clone observer ha ti.us
written of the male Hiaebird : "He uses tbe tenderust expressions, sits cIoe b) the side of his Bute, and sings ti her his most endearing warbling. When seated togetiier, if he espies an insect dtslicious to her taste, lie takes it up, flies with it to her, spreads his wings over her, and putsil into her mouth." But what shall I say of the Humming Bird. It is the least, and may w e not add, the greatest of all the feathered tribes. Three hundred and ten species are known to exist on the American continent, and the islands of the sea, but the only one familiar to us, is the Kuby -throat. The common impression is that the
Humming Bird feu Is entirely on the nectar it extracts from flowers, but tin-re is little doubt that a large portion of its food consists of very small insects. Having little fear of man, it sudors us to approach almost within reach of it, as it flits from flower to flower. Actually smaller and lighter than some of the insect
tribes-clad in a dress that glitters in the sunlight, with "all the brilliancy of the ruby, t!ie fiery lustre of the topaz, and the soft sparkling of the sapphire, the emerald and the amethyst," moving its tiny wings with a rapidity that renders tiiem almost invisible, and darting from flower to flower w ith the swiftness of an
arrow, there is scarcely, in all animate I nature, an ob
ject of greater admiration. It is indeed one of the
"wouderful works of Ood." I cannot omit fr..m my list, so familiar and interestng a bird as the Swallow. Mv youthful fan. v that
the Chimney Swallow, ( which is sai I to be more properly Swift.) never lights, is almost literallv true: at
least I have never seen it perched on a tree or bud lino-
ike other birds. One of the most pleasing ree-Iiec i'-n of my childhood, is of watching their ceaseless
K.tmiioun, aim listening o ineir twitterings of joy The Swallow will sometimes com? so close to the mower, in quest of insects disturbel by the falling grass, as almost to touch him with the tips of his wingsThe Barn Swallow, is boliered to possess greaterpower i.f flight, than any other bird. It was the
opinion of Wilson, that its
n evax.r 4 minotes, allowing daylight to continue fourteen hours. These birds took better care of their babies than some mothers I wot of, who leave theirs with the nurse, while they go a visiting, or to pleasure parties. But let us take the above facts, as the data from which to make some estimates and calculation. Sup
pose there are luO Robins, Thrushes, Blue birds and 0ther small bird on a common sized farm during the warm season, (and this is surely a low estimate ; that 50 pairs, each pair rearing a brood of voung. The
j young would Lave to be fed on an average, say two j weeks each, or H days. 2i6 plus 14 give 2,94 as j the number of insects ear brood would regain. Tuen
j Z,fM plus -0 gives us 144,200, as tbe number consumj ed by the young birds alone while yet in tbe nest. And now for these after taking to the wing, and tbe j 100 old birds, daring the season, 2y in all. We will i suppose these birds stay with us on an average fire ; mouths, or 150 days. Then if each bird eats daily, only iu own weight of insect food, or two thirds what , the Robin did, a few figures will show us that the !M j birds, ( supposing them to average each one ounce in ; weight, ) will consume, in tbe course of the Season, i lbs of insect food ! How many gnats, mFlIers, j mosquitoes, Ac, Ac, would that make, think you? It j should be stated, that in the case of the Robin, it was proved, in the course of the experiment, that the worms he devoured were really nutricious, and remembered that he lost weight until h:a food was increased from 4') crms, on the 11th day, to 153 worms
on t.'ie 14th day : in oth?r words he requTred tloS j amouut of food to keep him from tailing off in weight. ! fn the calculation I have supposed the 41 per cent, to ;
, represent the ftx.d, other than insect, consumed by : ' tiiese birds. j ! I know I need not multiply facts and arguments to convince the members of this Society, how much they ) j owe to the birds, or how much pleasure they are dej signed to afford us. But in conclusion let m; sav a few j words to the boy, and under the cognomen I include !
the full grown specimens, as well as those of less pretending dimensions. It is a truism that has passed I into a proverb, that "all things have an equal right to j live," and therefore it must be wrong to take the life j of anything for mere sport or pastime. Cowper, would not number on his list of friends '"the man who ! needlessly sets foot upon a worm ;" wliat would he I have saidof the boy who wantonly kills a bird ? I 1
fear such an act is a real sin in the sight of Hira who mane the birds, and who does not suffer even little
Sparrow to fall to the ground, without His notice.
Whenever, boys, you feel tempted to shoot a bird, ' stop and reflect a few minutes. Think lio.v many j good deeds it performs ; notice how beautiful and j how happy it seems. Think of the young ones ti the rest, that may d e of hunger and cold, if their parent , is killed, and tlien. :f the iraiu has not flown I o.,,.t i
I let you bang away if you still insist on it. - j ! But before I leave you let me say a w or! for the
larni-r, lie loves am! ch-rishes the birds: an ! lie . somehow feels, that those on bis prenii.-es, are his own
property, juat as the t'ulgeon at t ie barn or th Canary 'in his oape:and when he hears you popping'away here and there over his farm, he often feels strong'r in lined to pay you, it may be a friendly, but not verv sociable visit, for the purpose of inviting you to quit bis grounds. We feel I say we, lit I am a farmer and know very well what I am saying- that nnro'.;?i, at least, should be respected, and wc must continue to insist on it, that you shall not kill our Birds.

One of the earliest of our warblers U the Song Sparrow. A number of these birds build every season in my grounds, sometimes in the thick foliage of tbe ceilar trees, but ofteuer in some protected spot on the ground. The Song Sparrow sometimes hatches two or three broods in a season, building a new nest
each time. Its song, though, abort 1 full ot sweetness, resembling the first notes of the caoary. It i One of the very first we bear in Spring, and uulikc many other birds, continue throughout the season. Hi clear ringing Voice may sometimes be heard even in the depths of winter. It is to this bird that the l'oet addresses the following beautiful Iiues . "Joy fills the rale ; With joy ecstatic quivers every wing A floats thy note upon the ge'uu. gale, Sweet bird of Spring. Oh I if I knew Like the to sing, like thee the heart to fire. Youth should euchantod throng and Beautv sua To hear my Lyre." The Robin Readbreast i familiar to nearly ererv child in the country, for although a plain and unpre-
teuding bird in us dress, it is a hue songster, and withal one of our best friends. I am sorrv that these birds are lc.a, numerous auJ wore shy than iu nir bojhood days ; for a Robin, as I shall presently show, has been known to devour 41 per cent more than iu own weight of worm iu a single day. Then they seldom chose a safer or in. re seem led -it fer a doniicil than t projecting end of a fence rail ; but for omuyear past I Lave seldom seen a Robin' nest in uch a situation. Naughty bov may hare something to du in the nutter. I have no doubt that not
only thi bir.L but all our bird woulj grow more and
more familiar, if boys would naiformly treat them witli kindness. In a letter from a friend, a few year ince it was stated that the little bird bad grown so familiar with the family, that they did not hesitate to
t of the hands f the children. There i one little bird that so interested me in my boyhood, that I nut give it here a passing notice. These comes tha nimble-footed fellow down the trunk of that old mulberry tree. Hopping hither and thither with the rapidity of a mountain squirrel, assuming very position in a minute of time, bead or ba.k downwards a well as any other, moving sidewayaa easilr a forwards, and all the while closely scanning every nook and crevice when an inaect might but,. The white-breatexl Nathatch, sometime called the Tom. lit, is certainly one of the most- Interesting of the feathered race, as it surely i one of the most valuable. Look at bin again, come nearer, he is not shy. There, he stop still to make year acquaintance, thrusts out hi bill, survey yon closely for half a minute, and then dart away to fiuiah bU dinner. I said he i not hy. Perhaps hi activity prtrent the boy from hitting him. nr, it way be hi) very look of confiding innocence nalii biau too sacred to be Boiestefl, and so be knows no fear. . ' Put how shall I introduce tS Woodpecker. Kmc-

But I cannot speak thus in detail, in an essay like this, of one half of the birds that cheer our homes, and protect our crop in this part of the country, and most therefore leave unnoticed tlie Meadow Lark, the Oriole, the Wren, the Redstart, the Tauager, tlie IVwee, the Snow bird, the Slartin, the Indigo bird, the Cedar
bird, aud many others no less deserving, than those mentioned, a place in our highest estimation. Did time and space permit m , I would here insert a fVw paragraphs on the variety of form and wonderful workmanship of the nests of birds, but as manv scutences must "ullk-e. The intellectual power, and architectural skill of man, enable him to perform the most wouderful things. He measures the distances of the stars, weigh tlie Earth as iu a ballance, talks wiiU bis friends on distant continents, erects edifices whose workmanship and stupendous dimensions liewilder the ordinary mind, and spans the broadest rivers with fairy like bridges that vibrate to the storm, like a spider's web in the morning sun, and yet were he to attempt a si rue tore such as the Swallow builds every spring under thu eaves of nis barn, or in which the Oriole rides securely to and fro, during the raging of the tempest, be would lie likelv t.) nuke a failure-
How wonderful is the instinct of the little bird, w hich enables it to make for itself a domicil so precisely adapted o its wants, and one of such exquisit ind peerless workmanship. And yet of the almost endless variety of birds, scarcely two make their nests precisely alike. And n hile every specie at the present day. as some writer has well observed, makes its nest after the precise pattern of that of its Antediluvian ancestors, without additiou or improvement, it is nevertheless recorded ss a fact, that the older ones of some species construct their nests more skillfully'
i.ianiuoseot tewer summers, and consequently less experience. I will now introduce another brunch of my subject in which, perhaps, we are more interested, because it
effect our pockets and palate, ttirds are not merely beautiful, interesting, and instructive beyond most objects in nature, but they are our best friends in a more substantial way. In fact they are ind sponsible to the preservation of our fruits an 1 grain, and even our trees and shrubbery. And it may even be a question for serious investigation, w hether if God bad made no birds, the insect tribes might not iu time overrun creation, and become an intolerable nuisanj-e both to man and beast. At the great International Exhibition in Loodon, the stomachs of 20kir d of the common birds of Europe were shown, by which wss demonstrated the fact, that the majority of them feed largelv on animal food. Even the mischievious black bird, and he has many enemies in this country, is proved to be an insect eater during th greater part 01 the year. The stomach of this bird contained in "Jan.-.ary aud Februaryseeds, spiders, chrysali Is : March-worms, grubs, buds of trees ; April insects, worms, grubs. worms, November and December seeds and chrvsal
ids." (Am. Agriculturist, ) Proessor Treadwel', of Cambridge, M uss., in a c mtrunication to the Boston Natural History Society, relates some facta, of the re-
sun oi experiments on a nooin Kejorcast. "It appears that though the birds' food ws increased on the 11th day to 40 worms, weighing 20 dwts. (one ounce) the weight fell off; audit was not until the 14th day, when heate 63 worms, or 31 dwts. that be began to increase. In this day the weight of the bird was SI dwts. he therefore ate 41 per ceot aun ( tu otrm nigil ut 12 i.trr. The length of these worms if laid end to end would be about 14 feet, or Ira riatee tbe length of the intestines. A man eating at the same rate would require about "0 lbs. of flesh io a day, anl drink 5 or gallons of water. Commenting on the above facts, the Am. Atfriemitm remarks : A pair of these birds in a garden, with the average of four young ones' would eat 2j0 worms, or their equivalent in other insects daily, of catikerworms and caterpillars, when they Erst come oat, this would smoaint to several thousands daily. It would not take many birds to keep a a garden clean at this rate. And vet I have beard
of thoee who would not allow a Robin to build aboc
their garden. . Perhaps you are beginning to think ray picture is too highly colore,!, it cannot be true. Well, there is more
evidence in tbe same direction : A ntleman who
carefully watched a pair of Thrushes, found that the old one fed their brood ItW times daHv.or about once
