RICHMOND,IKD; March 30. 1865. Joe Borers' Wedding. In the country of- . "awav un in the muo)Uiua boasts ana of -tLe. best judges in California. . On the bench he is firm, decided and prompt, not caring a snap of the finger for th applause of friend or the muttering of enemies. He is, poihaps, the. most demoted man to the law in all creation, and has. his head o full of what he terms "judicial talk," that lie not unfrequently find himweir making learned charges and passiuj sentences outaide the court-room. On a recent occasion, the judgf was 1 called on to exercise the "power and authority in him veated," in the case of a young couple who desired wedlock. Of course he consented to . perform the pleasant duty, and on the appointed evening was promptly on hand at the hour at which the aifair was to come off. The room wa crowded with the fashion and beauty of the town, and none looked more dignified and happy than the judge Kitiinelf, who wm dressed within an inch of his life. ' . It in customary, on occasions of the kind referred to, for the good folks of the mountain towns to pass around the vrfne quite freely, to their everlasting discredit, we will add, they consider it no harm for one to manifest his interest in the joyous event by getting 'lively." The Judge is an ardent admirer of the fair sex, having in the course of life led the third one to the altar. To use his own language, he is a great "believer iu we.ldings,".iand that he should become a little mellow amid the glorious actnes.of the evening, was not to be wondered at by those who knew him intimately. He had the weakness of all judge La would take his 'tod." The wine had been passed round and Ttmnd and round the music had ceased the time for making Joseph Uowcrs and Nancy" Harkins one had arrived. Every heart throbbed with the most delightful emotions. The young gentle men desired to know how Joe would stuiJ it, and the young ladies were anxifctt to see how Nancy would stand the anxious shock.- Others again, who had ti - y ' i closely noticed tho turn of atTairs during thtf evening, fixed their attention upon the Judge, to see how he would come out of the scrape. t length the trying moment was announced; tho judge rose very cautiously from the chair which he occupied in one corner of the room, and, casting his uyts over tho company, he singled out the sheriff of the county, who was present as an invited guest. The judge had just Imbibed enough to make him forget the nature of his business. He was full of his "judicial talk," and required nothing but the presence of tho sheriff to ht:rt him. Looking sternly at that olllcer, he shouted "Mr. Sheriff, open the court, and call to order." "A general twitter followed this command, in the midst of which the sheriff took the "court" by Iho arm, and led him to his scot iu the corner, at the same time informing the august personage of the mistake. Everything bid fair for a pleasant and Hudden termination of the affair, until another annoyance, which was nothing else than th absence of tho bridegroom, was observed. It turned out that he had just utepped across the street to join his friends in a parting drink ; but before his return some old -blooded wag had whispered intli?ar of our old fogy the causo of ihe 'delay of the proceedings.' Instantly the chair in the coi ner moved, nnd in that direction all eyes were fixed "Sheriff," - slowly bawled tho judge, "bring Joe into court on a supenar," (the Judge had his own way of pronouncing the word;) theji Addressing the bride, who stood in tire foreground and hung her head iri deep confusion, he added ; 'I s'pote you arc the plaintiff? Well, don't take on. Jnnoceuce and virtue will be protected in this court." This was' the. saddest blunder of all. The judge was again made to see his mistake, and would have locn considerably set back, had it not been for a corrective in the shape ef "forty drops of ,the critter' which Tie instantly applied. In a few moments all was ready in right down earnest. The bridegroom fiad arrived full of Joy. The excitement was intense. He evidently felt every inch a Judge. "J-o it-ewers," commenced the man of law, in that distressing style of speech with ' which he was invariably tretfWed when under the influence of liquor, "J o B owers, stand up. Have yon anything to s-s-ay why s-s-sen-ionco "Stop, stop, stop, judge," shouted the 'sheriff, from the back part of the room; "you nrik not going to hang the man but marry him." wIThe Judge drew a long breath and blinked Vapidly, but stood his ground well. Recovering himself he proceeded ,,""J-o B-owers, do you take Nancy H-Harkins for y-j'our wife, so help you God.'! -."".: Tlu was a tolerable effort, and Joe nodded assent. , "N-Naacy Harkens, it now remains for this C-Court to " Here the sheriff again interrupted the judge, remiuding him f the real business of the evening. MU N-Nancy," resumed the judge, after being ot aright, "d d-d y-you take , Joe B Bowers far a husband, t to the best of your know ledge and belief, or d do you not ?" ! Yod can bet I will, softly answered the light-Lear ted Xancy. The judge then took the hands of the , happy couple, and joining them, wound tip as follow ; j - "It bow , remains ... for this h-here . C-Court to pronounce you J-oe B- Bowers and y-you Nancy Harkens, man and wife; and (here the judge paused to . wipe the "perspiration from his - face,) ra-may G-God Ormity h-have mercy on y your s-souls ! Sheriff, remove the cul--The company roared. The ' sheriff was taken with - a leaving. The jn&tge let himself out loose to a glasa of apple jack.It was tha: greatest wedding ever ..witnessed..., . 5 Sharpening Needles by tlecfncTty." JO
A practical application of electricity in an altogether new direction has just been made by a telegraphic engineer at Lausanne, and seems really to promise very valuable results.' Mr. Cauderay, the gentleman in question, has found that the electric .current is capable of performing readily andcheaply an operation which, as practised hitherto, has been one of the most unhealthy wiihin the whole range of the industrial arts, namely, that of sharpening the points of pins and needles..:. He first observed that if a thitvwira connected with the negative pole of a galvanic battery, aad so forming a; negative 'electrode, be passed through its bottomunto a vessel containing water slightly acidulated, and another similar wire connected with the i positive ' pole of the battery, and so forming a positive electrode, enter by ; the mouth of the vessel, and pass down into the acidulated liquid until its point is within the sixteenth of an inch or so of that of the negative wire, each wire being placed vertically, and the one exactly above the other, the circuit will be completed. Although the battery may consist only of a single, cell, by the aid of the small quantity of acidulated liquid between the extremities of the two electrodes, a current will thus pass, and within a few minutes the lower extremity of upper wire or positive electrode will have become perfectly conical, the fineness of tho point of the cone depending on the thickness of the wire, the metal it is made of, and the particular acid used. Experiments suggested by this observation resulted in the discovery that precisely the same phenomenon would occur in the case of each, if, instead of a single wire, a bundle consisting of a great many wires were used as the positive electrode. The applicability of this discovery to the sharpening of pins and neebles as a manufacturing process.seenis to have been thoroughly tested, and we are told that the pointing of these implements by electric agency requires so little battery power when practised on the great scale, that it -is materially cheaper than tho old method of pointing them, while the points obtained are much more perfect than have ever been got by grinding. That tedious process, the fine metallic powder disengaged during which is so injurious to the workmen engaged iu it, despite all the precautions they can take, would thus seem to be really doomed at last. Mechanics' Mayatine. SiNGiLAii Epitaph. The following in scription is on a grave-stone iu Williamsport, I'a. : - ' "Sacred to the Memory of Henry Harris Bom june'JT 1831 of Henry Harris t Jane his Wife. Died on the 4th of May 137 by the kick of a colt in his bowels peaceable and quiet, a Friend to his Father fc Mother & respected by all who knew him " and went to the world where horses can't kick where sorrows and weeping is no more." A SisoiLAii Cnincii Skbvice. Near the close of a sermon iu an African church at Mitchelville, S. C, and just before the singing of. the last hymn. Gen. LittleGeld, the military commandant of Hilton Head Island, appeared on the platform in front of the pulpit, and gave the congregation a lecturo on their want of attention to the sanitary condition of the village. He told them that themajotity of the families were altogether indifferent as to personal cleauliness, and that some of the houses were not tit for cattle to live in. He declared it to be his intention, hereafter, to have those washed who would not wash themselves, and to compel families to clean houses at least twice a week. He wound up his discourse by plainly informing his congregation that they had got to use more soap and water, and thathe should appoint a commission to inspect them. After this declaration the hymn, was sung, the benediction pronounced, and the congregation dispersed. From this incident it may be inferred that the spiritual purity of the negroes in that vicinity has received more attention than their bodily cleanliness. Old Johx Adams. Mr. Webster visited Mr. Adams a short time before his death, found him reclining on a sofa, evidently in feeble health. He remarked to Mr. Adams : "I am glad to see you 6ir, and I hope you are getting along pretty well !" Mr. A. replied in the following Cgurativc language : "Ah, sir, qnite tho contrary. I find I am a poor tenant, occup5'ing a house much shattered by time. It alwa-s trembles with every wind, and what is worse sir, the landlord, as near as I can find out, don't intend to make any repairs."Scietiti'fic American. Horrible Death. The most horrible death overtook Godfrey Schultz while on his way to Warren, Pa., a few ilaysairo. A collision took place and grasping his carpet bag he tried to make his escape from the car in which he was riding. Just then the baggage car came rushing in throngh the car, and before he could release himself he was jammed in between two seats. The car was in flames. Every effort was made to release him from his frightful position, but, without avail, He cried in his agony to those who where near him not to let him perish, but they were powerless. Largs qnanfifies of . snow were thrown in through the window of tb- burning cary and with desperate energy , he stooped, down, .gathered it with his hands and applied it to his faco and bodyj One man worked his way into the car but could not reach the helpless victim, and was got out with great difficulty after having been badly burned. Bat the merciless flames continued to wrap the unfortunate man in their frills, and for twenty miftutes he was clothed in fire before the soul deserted 'the veriest cinder of a body. He was a man of great strength and vitality, and his suffering no pen can adeqHately describe.
