, Carriage PraaaiaLioT some Weeks since an elegant carriage was presented o the estimable wife of Gen. Meredith, by several gentlemen of thia eity. W give below tb presentation speech, of air. Caldwell and the response of Mrs. Meredith: ' Ma. Gb. Meeeoitb, MaiAlf v t ...' i . v r Q jr-i. - A tJwrmVr Af gentlemen of this city, some of whom hav the honor of your personal acqustntvnee, all. of whom are the warm personal fronds ol yourself and the General, have waited upon yon this evening ta offer a slight testimonial f their good will and esteem for yon and of their high regard and admiration for the G?oerat. . Aa the medium of presentation, I shall not he able to convey a proper idea of the feeling which prompts these gentlemen oa this occasion. Though it he J rue that most of them hav not th pleasure of yanr personal acquaintance, they do not think they err in presuming that being the wife of General Meredith, you are worthy of him and are therefore deaervfng of any honor tliey can show you during your btief sojourn in their midif. - They like the General, not alone for the distinguish
ed services he haa rendered bis country in the conrse of this unhappv civil war not alone for the honorable proofs which he bears, and will bear to the grave npon Ji person, of a courage and. patriotism which have braved death on more than thirty bloody battle-fields not alone for tbat eminent administrative ability, which, when called into exercise in thia military district by the wisdom of the President, brought order out of confusion, hope out of duspair, life out of deathand made "the desert blossom aa tbe rose !' They like him not alone for these things which he has done and suf&Ted, but they esteem him for sll these high snd soldierly qualities which alwaya command the admiration of men, qualities which distinguish the gentlemen in the social circle, the soldier in the field, and the patriot in every situation of lif. I sm instructed, Madam, to present you an order for an elegant carriage, and to express on belialf of the donors, the hope that your swp life and that of the Genera! may b lon spared to enjoy any comfort this gift may afford you a comfort ther hope, to be enhanced at no very distant day by the changed condition of our bleeding country, from one of discordant and belligerent states, to a restored "Union of hearts and hands," pressing forward ss of old, in the path of National greatness snd National glory. We are Madam, very respectfully, Beadles A Bollinger, J. A. Mcintosh A Co., Warren Thorn bury, Watts, Given A Co., Norton Brothers, Cherry, Tirrel A Co., Surk Cochran A Co., It. G. Brazelton, Latham A Caldwell, W. R. Palmer, Fowler Mills A Co., S. F. Murrell, and other loyal citizens of Paducah. ; Mrs. Meredith Reply. Mb. Chsirksn asd Gsntlemk.h : Tbe substantial evidence of your regard manifested by the presentation of an elegant carriage, is as unexpected as pleasant to me, and I find it difficult indeed, to express in appropriate language, my thanks. Thia kind mark of your esteem, is doubly appreciated by me because it is indirectly an evidence of your approval of the labor and serrices of llim, (snd I beg of von. pardon for the expression,) who of all others ri'aeased to hear haa been a faithful steward in the dillicult andonorous duties of the several positions assigned him by hi Government; either at Head Quarters, in the camps, the field, or on the marcb. To know that he has dune well is plessing, but when his loyal fellow citizens endorse bis course and mani fest their approval ami estimation of his policy, in not ouly a delicate, but substantial manner, I must say the value of the gift is greatly enhanced, and its in trinsic worth is not alone that which will make It appreciated by me. Again I thank you. Gentlemen, for the gift, and under the circumstances connected with its presentation, I foci more than grateful for it, and shall carry its recollection and tbe emotions called up by it, with me as long aa life lasts. . I am gratefully, Airxa Mkrkdith. More Romance than Rkalitt. Tbe account we gave last week of tbe manner ia which that bounty-jumper got out of tbe "Calaboose" was incorrect. True, our worthy Mayor gave the key to the individual who called upon him for it; but ht did not let the prisoner out he put him in, and was one of the provost guards. The true state of the case U : our City Marshall, Zimmerman, nol knowing that there was any one in the Calaboose, opened the door for the purpose of airing it, and the prisoner, having been put in a cell where one of the posts had been removed and the door of the adjoining cell having been left open, finding that tbe "way was open," as Friends 9ay, deliberately walked out and aired himself, thinking, probably, that the prison could be aired just well without his presence as with it! No one i specially to blame for the prisoner's escape. Mating Again. The Spring of the yea:, is chosen by the birds for mating, and a circumstance occurred last week at Ccntreville, that shows conclusively tbat the feathered songsters are not "the ' only ones that follow this ancient practice. A couple of the bi pedal genus of the human species, having been mated in their youth and having lived together in conjugal felicity, for about twenty-seven years, and, in tbe mean time, raised a family of six children, became dissatisfied, separated, and a divorce was procured some few months ago. The influences of the spring, or may-be, the example of the birds, operated on their estranged hearts, and the following ojicial announcement, concludes the history of this human mating: Married. On Thursday last bv Jo. Kain. Esq., Mr. Jos. Morgan, to Mrs.'Lou'ua Morgan, all of Center Township. . May their last mating days be their best days, is the wish of the printer. tMf Who bss not heard snd admired the old song of "Rosin the Bow V The writer of that nng has gained th niche i t Immortality, and the carrier of our paper, determined ta gain th aaine fame, if possible', perpetrated the following, whilst on his route through th city, during tbe hih wind ot last Friday, which he styles MRo-oa-tneBIow!" . ; . . The Elements of Agriculture., ay. George F'U E. Waring, Jr., 1M4. ! , - t '"" j ? - , s : ; i , - ? " To those who take an Interest in scientific agriculture, and methodical farming, this will prove to. be a charming manual. It is well written,, in, a plain and compondioua style, ami ia well .adapted as a text book in our schools Signs of the Times, by C J. Baasea. These are letters ' to a friend, on the dangers of religious liberty in the present state of the world. The author fears the encroachment of the hierarchy open the consciences of. men. His strain is that of one who mourns over the apprehended prospect, and is calculated to en7 list the sympathy of his reader in be half of the cause he espouses. ; Schlegel's Lecture on Modern History. " This writer is very successful In burying up his ideas in a specious verbiage; and . after his meaning . Is dug out, it prove" to be but common-place, and hardly worth the labor of exhuming because common. Pages are devoted to "the beginning of our man's history and the last revolution of the earth." Now what revolution does the reader suppose the author means, tbe last diurnal, or last annural revolution at the time of his writing ? Why neither ! he simply means to give it as his opinion, that the history of man should properly begin from the last great convultiott of the earth, that is the flood ! lie brings forward tbe zenduvesta to corroborate the Mosaic history of man. He is not a German mythic, but is decidedly speculative; for instance he adopts the opinion tbat the flood was probably the effect of a comet. His early history of the Germans, the origin of the name, their customs, dec, his vindication of the character of Joan of Arc, who, he says, though more than once wounded, never shed blood herself; and was incapable of any feminine cruelty: the power of tbo Por tuguese; the fall and rise of Russia ; religious schism; war and persecution, and many other points of interest will beguile many a moment of the reader's time. Tbat the reader may judge whether I misrepresent this great German philosopher, I will give him the central idea of his book. He simply tells us, but in the exalted style of too many of the writers of that school, tbat man is born a free agent, capable of choosing good or evil ; had he remained true to the divine will, his freedom would have been that of a blessed spirit. But having by disobedience lost this happy estate, the great problem of each individual now is, to submit his lower and earthly will to the divine will, so as to regain paradise. Whatever errors in speculations his philosophy may contain, no reasonable man can call this infidelity or atheism. Man's true freedom, says he, consists not only in freedom from outward restraint, but from the bondage of lust and passions. Is there anything novel or uncommon here ? Is not all this commonplace? "Is the doctrine less common place, that the voice of conscience is the inward revelation of God." But enough : it is clear that Schlegel is not to be ranked among the German rationalists, so odious to tbe Orthodox Churches. Fatal Accident. On Saturday week last, Mr. James Cummikgs, an employe of the Ind. Central Railway, and brother of Road-Master Ci;mxhkq3, while standing at the East end of the Freight Depot, leaning carelessly against the post placed there to keep the cars, when backing tip, from injuring the platform, and not noticing the approach of some cars that were then being backed up, was struck by the bumper of one of the cars, in the side and jammed up against the post, completely uiashinz in his side. He lingered a v w until the Monday following, when he died. He was a single man, and his remains were taken to Rochester, X. Y., where his parents reside, for burial. Patrick Goden, On the 7th inM., at Hamilton, O., met with an accident when stepping on board the cars, while in motion, slipped and had bi right foot crushed by the cars running over it. - He waa brought to this city, after his wound wss dressed by a surgeon in Hamilton, when Dr. Haugbten was called in who informed him that his foot ought to be amputated. Mr. G. refused to have it done, until Saturday week last, after mortification set ia. A consultation of physicians was held, and it was decided to perform tbe operation ; but the remedy proved to be too late, and he died a few hours after. Mr. G. was a veteran soldier, aad had just enlisted in Hancock's corps. We gather the above facts from Ust week's TtUg (ErOr friend. McGIUR XIXOK, hare made an important and serviceable improvement on "Mitchell's Combined Fosset and Measurer," by inventing a "Light Mea&urer, Floating Scale, and lndicsier." and hav already made application for a Patent. It works like a charm.
