Swelenborg ittrongly itisista ujon the necessity o a Urge portion of the Scripture being understood alle gorically or figuratively. He tells us it was in 17il, that his sight was open' into the spiritual world : and he was pitted with powe to converse with spirits and angols. One would thic! after this, there was little use in his "devoting himsel to the study of the Hebrew, and the diligent perusal of the Scripture." ''During his fintl sickness, he told his friend I-schu8 that after death, lie would re turn to him, and tell him all. Hut I do not know t'uit ho has been heard of since. One of hi vagaries was that departed spirits return to the earth, either as guardian angels or as friends. It is said, that Swedeuborg, although cheerful, was never seen to laugh. He a voluminous author; and all his wrtings are not yet published, though iu the annual course of being done. The first public association of the Swedenliorgians did not take place till 17.HM. They have now three distinct annual conventions, which meet at Boston, Philadelphia and Cincinnati ; and they publish four periodi cals. The "Nineteenth Century" was written by a Layman ; aud after some abatement, I can common 1 ttie work, as a very temperately written treatise, to the notice of every intelligent reader, who wishes to 'nfnrm his mind, and to disabuse his feelings of undue prejudice against the Swedenborgians, our maxim should be to omit the "falses," and accept of truths wherever found. The Votr UmiiH'j Uortrimrt are : those concerning "our Lord concerning tlie Scriptures, concerning Faith, and concerning Life. Among the articles of Faith I suppose mut be included an implicit confidence in Emmanuel Swedenbo rg ; for he tells us that lest inatikind should remain any longer in doubt concerning the Bible, it has "pleased the Lord to reveal to me its truo internal sense." The villain made a nice calculation for a sure thing, baring placed paper and pine sticks at the side door leading into the Hall up stairs from tbe Engine room, and then set fire to it. But as good lutk would have it, the paper failed to ignite the pine and the fire was smothered out, and it ouly schorched and smoked the door a little. There is no place about the building that a fire could have been communicated, with a better prospect for burning down the building more effectually, than the place selected ; for the stair-way furnishes a draft equal to a chimney, and once under way, there would be no chance to stop it. The night police should keep their eyes open for incendiaries. Concert, on To-.Morrow Etening. The lovers of Music in our city, are much excited in anticipation of the Concert whwh is to take place at Starr Hall on Thursday evening next. Miss Lloyo, for whose benefit it is given, has no equal in the West as a performer on the Piano. A number of our citizens who heard her play, durir.g her visit here last summer, were so much delighted, that they insist ed on giving her this complimentary benefit. She is to be assisted by iliss Dvcke, wliose singing has created a great sensation at Indian apolis, and other places, where she has given concerts, She does not affect her hearers with ! those bewildering, ear-piercing, operatic dilncullie, which many professional singers so tuucli alfoct; but adopts that style of okvuie nmsic which pleases the ear and goes directly to me heart of every one. Several gentlemen amtcrs of rare musical nbilitv. wiil contribute to the entertainment; and on the whole, the concert will be one that has never been excelled in this city. There is a family by the name of Hall, living in one of those tenements, who are in extreme destitution. A small child in that family died with the smallpox on the floor, lyiug on an ol 1 coat there being no U excepting the one on which its mother was lying w ith the same disease, and that was an old and very dirty straw-tirk, and the covering consisting of two ragged comforts. The poor woman has not had a change of clothing for some weeks. We hope our benevolent societies will relieve this ease immediately. The first part of last week Jack Frost paid this part of the country a brief visit paid his first seasonable instalment in snow and ice an earnest of what he intends to do this winter all to the evident delight of juveniles, who took out their skates and gave them an airing. Rebkl Soles. We neglected to acknowledge tbe receipt of a pair of rebel u&, from our Iriend A. W. Mendesh all, Esq. They are evidently made by machinery, and are the handiwork of a Yankeo whom the rebs found within their lines, and who, to escape serving against his country iu the army, turned his genius to the manufacturing of Wooden soles for Shoes. Leather having become scarce a resort to stout canvas for the uppers was had. There .being an inner and an outer sole the canvas is cut so as to fit the foot and ancle -stretched over the inner sJe and tacked down, when it is placed on top of the outer sole, which is screwed fast at the bottom, and then the heel is also screwed fast from the inside of the shoe. We judge that it forms a very good shoe and protects the foot from wet and cold, and is nearly as good as leather, though rather stiff. Mr. M. informs us that these slrnes are mianly used by the rebel cavalry being too clumsy for infantry. About six hundred pairs were captured by the Illinois regiment to which he was attacheJ, in Georgia, and he brought three or four pairs with "him placing one pair on exhibition at ur office, where the lovers of the curious are invited to call and see them. jT4f A Bee-Hire that is just as good in Winter as in Summer, and is a fitting emblem of the busy energy of its owner, is at all times to be seen in front of D.
