The following remarks upon improvements in fire-arms and other implements of war, are of much interest at the present time: IMPROVES! KJCTS IX FIRE-ARMS. It was impossible that the country should pass through a great military crisis without an unusual stimulus being given to invention in the subjects of firearms and munitions of war. This impulse, commencing with the year 101, appears to have reached it culmination in the following year, 1802, and in the past year to have declined to nearby its conditional! the former year, 18G1. This is shown in the following tabic of the whole number of applications filed in the last four years for improvements in this class of invention : ' 1M0 12 . 17 . 7rt 17 13 139 11 Co 100 113 12 44 21 1862 81 151 120 25 l!i 50 183' 52 SI 115 42 13 I'J Cannon Projectiles Small arm--. ed a considerable number of improvements, not only on-the incident of locks, sights, bayonet attachments, etc., applicable alike to cither form of arm, bat also a large proportion of the improvements in revolving fire-arms, which belong essentially to the class of breech-loaders.
Of the numeious improvements in revolving fire-arms patented within the past ye ar, a large p jrtion relate to adaptations to special forms of fixed ammunition, or of primed metallic cartridges. The emgl r"ment of chambered revolving cylinde rs ha9 practically been almost restricted to piatols ; but there does not appear any sufficient reason why a method of reodering arms repeating found to be so convenient and efficient should not be much more largely extended to muskets, or arms with long barrels. In view of the very striking advantages presented by breech-loaders in their great er ease and safety of loading, and their rapidity of firing, as well as in the incre ased facility of handling the arm in many straightened conditions of ambuscade, etc., there seems to be every reason to e?.pect that this class of weapons must befo re long come largely into use in modern vfarfare, and probably ultimately displac e entirely the present system of load ing i it the muzzle. 'hen Illinois "spreads herself she cov ers a considerable extent of surface. Wi iness the following estimates, the first in r esard lo corn and the other to hogs. In ls;o Illinois raised one hundred and fift sen million, bushels of corn. If this wei 'e placel in cars, three hundred bushels in a car, it would make a train two tho usand three hundred and ninety-five mil cs long; aud allowing twenty-five cars to a locomotive, it would take fourteen th jusnnd three hundred and seventy loco motives to draw it. During the pork season just passed, Illinois packed 1,273.300 hogs, of an a ,'erage weight of one hundred and ninety p ounds. If these were placed in cars, ton tons in each car, measuring two rods, it. would make a train seventy-five miles I ong. Allowing twenty cars to each lo;oaiotivc, it would take six hundred loCotnetivea to draw the train. . . , Statistics of Miscegenation., The Copperhead leaders have, for the past few months been continually jrating about the doctrine of miscegenation. Amalgamation is to be the resultof emancipation, as they allege, and the society of the Xorth is to be contaminated with a revolting admixture of the black element, as a consequence. Now, an examination of the matter, shows that it is in the slave States, where almagamation is practically carried out and adopted Here are : some suggestive statistics thereupon: There were 411,013 mulatto slaves in the South in 18G0, of whom 00,970 are in Virginia, '43,2$ 1 in Kcntuckey, and 36, 000 in Georgia. These numbers are considerably beyond the legitimate proportion of "those States. There were also 17C.7S9 free mulattoes in the United States in 18G0, of whom 106,770 belonged to the South, and 60,969 belonged to the free States. Of the free mulattoes, Virginia contained 23,484, which number, added to her slave mulattoes, makes a total of 96,82-1. Her mulatto slaves alone exceeded tho total number of mulattoes in the free States. J The -whole mnmber mulattoes slaves and free, in the Union, in 1S60, was 588,302, of whom 69,969 belonged to the iree States, and 518,383 to the slave States a number greater than the combined white population of Arkansas. Delaware and Florida greater than the white population of Alayrland almost twice as great as that of "South Carolina and twice as great as the combined populations of Delaware and Florida. The mulatto population of Virginia alone exceeds the number of whites in Delaware and Florida. The shipments of copper frera Lake Superior in 1?63 amounted 10,000 tana, and of iron res 330,000 tuns.
