Earning Pot, was news to ns, probably it will be to a majority of our readers. We had no idea that an underground railroad Jive milts long, was in operation in London. The Pott says: An ingenious engineer had already constructed a railroad from the city to Blackwall, running over the tops of the houses, and trains drawn at good speed by stationary engines; and at last it occurred to some one to run a tunnel under the streets, and lay an iron track in that. Thorough trial has proved this to be, on the whole, the safest. pleasantest, cheapest plan the greatest reiiar to- the overcrowded streets, and the moat successful of all that have been tried, for the convenience of trade and passengers. There is at present in London a tunnel road five miles long, connecting Farrington street with Paddington station; a double track is laid, and the company has already carried adout five millions of passengers. The tunnel is thorough-, ly ventilated, dry, well lighted, and in ! every way comfortable; to ride though it is very much like walking through one of the great store cellars of a Broadway dry goods house. The rate of speed attained is twenty miles per hour. Entrance and exit stations are provided at short intervals, by a staircase leading to the street above. The success of the Underground Rail, way in London has been so decided that Parliament has chartered companies who intend to surround the city with tunnel roads, and connect- all the raiiwav stations. It is said that twenty millions sterling have already been subscribed towards this vast enterprise. The cost of tunnelling and laying the track ready for operation, is about a million dollars per milo. 'New Hamoshire. WiscOQsin. Rbotle Island, Connecticut, Indiana and Michigan are said to be the only States whose former quota hare been more than filial, so that they have obtained credits upon the 14th Inst The credits of these States upon that call are as follows: New Hiimp hire, 10; Wisconsin, 2,130;: Rhode Island, 525; Connecticut, 6W, Indiana, 9,939; Michigan, 631.
Anecdote of a Daughter of Cassius M. Clay. A contributor sent the following narrative to the Brooklyn Union: Morgan's command was encamped near by, when a hard-looking eastornr, seated on the back of a sorry-looking nag, might bare been seen entering tha gateway of an extensivs domain in Kentucky. Ha shambled off in great haate to a lar bam standing at a lit !e distance from a spacious mansion. The horse and rider bad neaily retched the stable door when tha Juno-like figure of a joung la J tripped along to the end of a piazza and beckoned him to return. At this conjuncture I suspect the rouge began to feel that he bad gotten himself
into a scrape, lie half turned on lm sadd.e. and for a moment scrutinized the irate beauty; then lowering hia head and ruminating a minute, ! turned bia borse arourd and rode rack. iOur two horsemen bad by this time reached the gate, and were new within bearing dis- , tanee of the foil iwing piquant colloquy: What are you doing here? "Well, Mi, yoa see my home is fagged out, and Imi bound to have another." "It so happens the I am left alone this . morning, and I protect aginst it. Surely you : are too good a soldier to disregard the ret monstrance of a lady. "Sony. Mi, but it csn't be helped. If you like I'll leave mine in place or yours.' N, you will not." At this stage of the proceedings the unrelenting savage turr.ed sharply away and rode off in queat of his booty, and ray young friend and hia companion approached the lady. With lowering brow and compressed lips "She stood a moment a a Pythoness Stands on ber tripod, agonized and fu'.t Of inspiration, gathered from Distress." Suddently she wheeled around and re-entered the door. She wad gone but a moment, and when she emerged tgam her slender waist was encircled by a patent leather belt, from the edge of which peeped out two ivory -handled pistols. She again stationed herself on the edge of the portico meanwhile murmuring to herself in n undertone, as if speaking to her ownteirt, "Perhaps he will not find mass ho thinks I am." Presently the marauder made his appearance once more in the adjoining inclosure, astride his own paltry pony, and lea ling by a bridle thrown ovsr his arm one of her father's favorite horses. Like a falcon let loose she darted across the lawn to a partition fence, drew one of the piste la, and as her arm rested for a moment on the topmost tail, tho ominous ' click ' was beard. "It hr s a string quick jar upra the ear, That cocking of a pistol, when you know A moment more will bring the sight to bear Upon yur person, twelve yard off, or so." "All timid creature become paralyzed when the ear catches a very threatning sound. So it must have been with this valient transgressor. Before the leaden messenger had rped its way to meet kim, he hail reined up abort and stood Stock Mill before the assailant. She then nondeliberate aim and tired; and the ball struck bis cap fair in front, and sent it llying. You may be aure, added my youthful narrator the fmp v did not tarry long at!er that. He scampered off ' sana liorso, sans cap, very much alter the fashion of John Gilpin. The heroine of this little story was the daughter of the Hon. Cassius M. Clay. Seven Thousand Rebels Dead at Gettysburg. The Gettysburg ( Pa) Star and Banner says: "From evidence developed to the workmen and other engaged in removeing the dead bodies on the battle-field, thay, are now fully convinced that not less than seven thousand rebels lost their lives in thia conflict, the bodies of whom are still there. In one space of three acres were found three hundred and twenty-five Confedeiate slain; sr.d elsewhare, in a kindle trench, two hundred and fifty more A considerable portion of the ballle-giound is likely to be plowed up this spring and aummer, by farmers owning it, preparatory to planting corn and other grain. As a matter of course. Confederate graves must be obliterated, and the trenches which new indicate their p'.asas. There is a strong desire with the people, in respect to humanity, to have theie bodies, though of the enemy, respectably and decently put sway in soma enclosure where they may not be disturbed. One common humanity should impel us to such a step." A Rep-esentative man lives in Wayne county, Indiana, who writes to the Adjutant General to be excused from serving in the Indiana legion, as he has one son in the 7th Indiana, one in the 7th Kansas' Cavalry, rue in tho fourth and i youngest has enlisted in the 124th Indiana, and gone to the field Wabash Express. It is frnra experience that COX S TIT L" TIOX W A T E K has enum thnd we now say let no man doubt, when a sinjrle tx'ttle lias heeti known to core disease which the best medical Jalent in this country has failed to rehere. A remedy possesinp tlie virioes of Constitution Water cannot Declassed under "quack" prvprtions, as it is now u-d by the mst scientific practitioners in this city. It is only second-class physicians that cries down popular remedies, while the better skille.1 make use of every means to accomplish a cure ; and tho success of the physician increases as his know Iclt of different remedies enables him to province a cure, bile others fad in the attempt. Science is satisfied with tlie truth. Give Constitution Water a fair trial we mean you who are under some vrit1it' can- from year to year, and we particularly allu le to ladies who arc constantly resortinp to tnral trealmmt, and all sorts of local ap plications for diseases, with as much chance of success as there would l tri m loc;d applications to the throat for diseases of t'ie brain. We have always been careful to use lansmspe in our circular that could not shock the most delicate organization, but we reoieve s" many communications Irom persons for which Constitution Water is adapted, ami of whose disease no mention has been made, tist we come to tlie conclusion that if tlie rcmody is capable ol pnwlucinp a cure, rto matter what tlie disease uuy le, it shonld be made known. The medicine is put up for the public, and there should he no exceptions. e would say. Constitution Water is not a pilled pill, made to suit the eye and ta.-to : it is a medicine, in every sense of the term, placed in tlie han Is of the people for their relief, and if t .ken according to tbc d rections it w ill in every case prwduce a radical cure. We wou! I say that tiie directions in r 'card to diet, etc., relate only to the disease under which they occur. DIABETES Is a disease of the stomach and liver, actin;; through the kidneys, and is, without doubt, tiio most obstinate disease, except constimtion, that effects tlie human constitution. We b.ave no space for iliscussinir causes, but will state that tlie effect of the disease is tho co liver turn of the starchy principle i or vegetable portion of the food into sugar, which stimulates the kidneys to an excessive secretion of water. Many persons suffer from this disease who are ignorant of it ; thst is, they pass large quantities the in day and are obliged to get up from one to fifteen or twenty times durinsr the niirht. No notice is taken of it until their attention is called to the larire dischsie of water, and often when it is so far advanced as to he beyond the control of or- j dinary remedies.
