For the Palladium. iloMK, a place of comfort and rust, Should be the place we love the best. How many there are no home can claim, -How many have only a home by name T Slight exertion it lakes for a happy home, ; Sometimes very little to make it none; But one false step with man or with wife, Will destroy a onco happy home for life. No home can ever be made complete, Without there is ona we love to meet ; Ilome's not merely a place to eat and sleep ; It ahould be a place the affections to keep. Wish not for spleadid marble halls, Furniture fine and stucco walls ; Fill'd with pictures, plate and guilded ware ; For t'flen you'll find no home is there. Washington, D.C., May 23, '63. j. a. Ttie Oenernlslil lsOokcrs Narrow Ksfnpc. I suppose we muy as well balance the aceosnts on ' the score of Generalship. Hooker outgeneraled Lee in the crossing, and earlier movements on Chancellorville. It is almost as clear now that Lee outgeneraled Hooker by pouncing unexpectedly on the right flank on Saturday, in concentrating again on Sedgwick on Monday, while three-fourths of our army lay utterly idle. It is unjust to Hooker, however, to leave this bare statement without explanation. General Hooker is now lying very ill at Falmontb, in cooscquence mainly, as is be lieved, of the terrible shock he received from a cannon ball dariog one of the earlier days of the operations at Chancellorville. The ball struck a pillar of the house aga'nst which he was leaning at the time. He ivas knocked to the ground, and remained tenseUtt for twenty or thirty tninUt. It is impossible that he could have recovered from such a shock so as to have been qualified to enter again, (as be did.) upon duties so weighty that the strongest might well bend and tremble beneath them. Shortly afterwards General Hooker had a till more remarkable escape. Still feeling weak and diziy from the shock, he left his command temporarily with Couch, with orders to be called on the appearance of any emergency, and lay down in his tent. Presently he began to feel faint, sick at the Btomaoh, and oppressed with the hot, close atmosphere of the tent, and went out to see if the fresh air would not relieve him. Within twenty minutes after he left, a shell passed througn the tent, struck the mattrass on which he had been lying, and left it a mass of tattered rags. Gsa. Mbaghkr. WHAT'S IX THE PACK I
It was a lonely looking house, a good distance from any other, and standing at the end of along avenue, and its onlj occupants on the lay in question were two wo-men-serran'.s and a boy. The time, per-1 , i i. -7 .1. i j s baps, hang rather reavily upon the hacdsol ... r .. figure toiling up the avenue was hailed with unconcealed taiisfaction. 'It's ol 1 Burke, the jagger," said one. "It isn't nld Burke; bi he's got a pack an j how. How slow he walks, and it's getting dusk ; we chan't be able to see the things." The jagger, or bagman, or peddler, whichever name you like best, came op to the door, wiping his forehead, and groaning under l is burden and wll he might. Surt-lv a pack cf ucli size bad never before wearied the enduring shoulders of a bagman. He did nut attwnpt to ease himself of it, however, or to dip!ay his wares in the customary ir.anner, but he took off his bat to the women oiiiely. "Would ite mistress take pity on Lim, and let hint leave lis pack in the hall or the kitchen any where, to that it would be safe? And he would fetch it the next day." Now,1 ti e master and mistress were, as we Live sern, from home; so was the man who filled the offices of coachman, groom, and gardener, with the help of the boy above mentioned as a tub; aud neither master, mistrehs, nor coaclituao, would return that nights The three soivants therefore looked at each other inquiringly, a little curious, and a great deal disappointed. "What's in the pack ?" askd one. "Oh, it's nut a regular puck, but an order' responded the bagman. "A lot of ItOarSe Cloth and Some KllriPOwder; nolll inn; , . . . , ii . t . lust wuuiu uu rt feiiuw tut: jauies. jjuk x am tired to death, and have got to go further. "Well, he might leave the pack if he IikI ed, but he must take it away early next f dy" . .. The peddler entered the hall, and prepared to lay down his buideo; then espied the door of a little room, which would have been a butler's pantry if the house had boasted a builer. Miht he put it there, be--r .1.. .i cause oi tuiigoupwuKii nu It was pui there accordingly, the barman c!osil) the d, , . i H OOT attcr him carefully, and warning the friendly receivers not to take a light into the room, or incddlo with the pack on any ac count, because of the gunpowder. The women went bi.;k to their kitchen, and the boy lingered in ihe hall meditative ly, having waiched the peddler down the nvenue. At lust he went to the door cf the butler's pantry, and took a long look through the keyhole. The last rajs of the setting sun streamed through the little window, and fell upon the pack lying in huge slate on the floor. Again the boy walked up and down the hall, and again he looked long and anxiously through the keyhole. Did the pack move a little as he stared at it? What a fool be was, he thought; it was all fancy, cf course. Suddenly his gaze became ri tiled on one corner of the pack, where there seemed to bo a loophole, and he saw,. as he believed in the red light, the gleaming of a human eye. j lie drew back his own from the keyhole; ho shot a bolt into its socket noiselessly, and then be began walking up and down again. He thought about the loneliness of the place, and the helplessness of its inmates ; he thought about those two in the kitchen, and bimseif, and about the peddler, and what might happen. He walked till it was quiie dai k, and he could no longer distinguish the outlines of that mysterious pack; then he went into the kitchen, where the two worn n were still talking of tLe shawls and probable gown pieces. 'Where's the old gun?" asked the boy. "La, Joseph, what should you want with that? It's up there, over the clock." Is it loaded? All right," said Joseph, examining. Now, then, I'll tell you whi I want with it ; I am going to shoot the pack." "To shoot ii! Good gracious, what for?" Joseph looked at the two terrified faces, with his own rather pale, but determined. "You won't squall or anything, if 1 tell jou what fur, wiil you?" "No; but Joseph the gunpowder!" 'Gunpowder's all my eye. I'm going to shoot it, because there's a mortal man in it; and a man doen't get himself wrapped in a pack for no good purpose; that's what I say. If you're afraid, give me the light, And stop where you are." But the women crept behind him tremulously, and kept silence while he tried again if he could see anything through the keyhole. Then he opened the door boldly. " If the pack's an honest pack," said Joseph, "it won't mind a shot." Perhaps the pack really moved, or perhaps Joseph was a little nervous, for the last word was not out of his mouth when the report of a gun rang through the room. A dead silence followed it. Joseph s eyes were fixed in a wide open stare on the pack. Presently, a email, red fpot came oozing through the coarse wrapperine; it srew larger. A little red stream trickled down oa the floor, and crawhd towards the' boy's feet. Then he retired hastily, and ! locked the door again. j His face was very pale. He had killed a! miii, sum it was b nornuio iniDg to ao and to think of. "Now you two hck alt the doors, and make them as fast as you can," he said; "that peddler chap won't 6top till morning for this pack, I'm thinking. What o'clock is it ten? Let ns put lights in ail the rooms, and mtke-believe there's a party a regular houseful." Once during (he night. Joseph, standing near a window, fancied he heard a low whistle outside; his heart gave a great jarap, and be signalled to the two women to move about, and rlam the doors, and make as much noise as they coul.i. The whistle was repeated once only, a ad then all was quiet. But though the morning light broke in upon the servants, they could not go to bed or rest for thinking of that ghastly thing down in the batler'a pantry. Noon brought the master of the house, but no peddler came with shawls and gown-pieces. When they uuJid the pack, the hand of tbe dead man was found clutching a small whistle, and he had a belt on, stuck with pistols and a cutlass. It is needless to add that Joseph was rewarded; sad some time afterwards, one of a gang of robbers being caught in a burglary, confessed himself to be tbe identical bagman who lef; his pack at ike lonely boose, and never went to claim it.
