We noticed, a short time since, what our builders were sccomplihing in and about oar beautiful city,' and concluded that we would devote a- few items to mechanical interests in this - issu. On Monday, therefore, we visited sveral of oor tnanufacto. ries, sad were indeed surprised at the ener
gy and enterprise of our inhabitant?. The first establishment we visited was the Foundry and Machine Shop of Messrs. A. Gaar it Co., tetter known as the "Spring Foundry. There arc built portable en gines, sugar mills and evaporators, grist and saw mill machinery, mill castings and stationary engines. Their speciality is the manufacture of Gaar's Threshing Machines and Separators, the annual manufacture of which, we learn, is about three hundred. They have an extensive fonndry, wood shop, paint shop, machine shop and pattern room, well worth visiiing. A fine lumber yard is attached, and in fact they have every facility to carry on business advantageoualy. We were very much pleased with the order and system carried on in this establishment, which is the only true method of managing a large manufacturing concern. We next visited the establishment of Messrs. J. M. Aiken 6t Co., better known perhaps as the Qualir City Works." This establishment is situated near the Depot, does, perhaps, as heavy a business as any other machine shop in the city. This firm mannfactuie steam engines, portable engines, horse powers, separators, sugar mills, engine work of nil kinds, plows and various kinds of eatings, both brass and iron. They employ about 25 hands at prsent, and are in need of more men, so last is their business increasing. Among other articles which we saw at their works was a number of iron pillars and window c:tus fur Scott's new building to Le built near the Meredith House. Messrs. J. M. Aiken and John Iioherts are at lha head of the ; Quaker City Woiks" and cive ceneral tifar tion f.r (Uir nmm m atiflniion to i business. Jonas W. Robinson, ia mnnnfactur ing horse powers, portabld engines, separators, new stylo saw mills and sug.tr mills, besides ho d oes a large amount of rcpaiiing. He employs about 20 hands. Bjle5s, Mnrthant it Co.'s Foundry, situated on South Green btreet near Main, employs somo 30 mcii.but they are short handed now. They cast engine work, reaper castings and ftney ornamental work for buillIine9 Jf nS considerable repniiing ! We sw ronvj fine window enps fora private residence being built out of the city, the finish of which was vory creditable. Around in the vicinity of the railroad Depot nre a nuiLbor of establishments worthy of notice. S. Homey & Co's Plow Manufactory attracted our attention. This estahli-hment employs from IS to 20 hinds. and are m tnti'aoiuring various kinds of plows and agricultural implements. They have 7 forgi at work, an extensive wood .hop. paint shop and store room. Their J speciality is the "Empire Steel Plow." J. When all hands are employed they can turn 1 out work at the rate ol one plow per hour, j ana wima nurrieu nave turned out pi' . a . I . 1 per day. Their plow timber is furnUhed from New Castle, of which they consume a large quantity. The iron which they use is obtained from Pittsburg, la Besides pljws and hsrrows, they ara making a new style of road scraper. They have turned out tha J past season between 300O and 1000 premium plow. Mr. Horney having been about 30 years in the plow business this f.tct alone guarantees him success. . D. S. Horney, in tho sa na vicinity, is also manufacturing plows of all kinds. His n.anufactory is not oaite so cxteusive as Horney & Co. 's, but ho is doing a lrge amount cf work. He has from 6 to S hands employed, and he first commenced work in 1822 in Richmond. His plows and tending machinery are much sought after, and his work is done in a neat and substantial unaw . i a sr ner. in tne same winding is me i eg Man ufactory of Messrs. Hollopeter & Co., who re manufacturing shoe pegs extensively. They supply a great portion of the Wes'ern market, and previous to the breaking out of the reliellion, shipped an immense quantity of pegs to the Southern market. It is well worth while spouding an hoar cr two in this manufactory, and they have a great many vUitors. Tbtir machinery is very simple, yet effective, ard they are manufacturing all siies if pegs from f to 1 of an inch in length. These pegs are Sfll by measure, ani are put up in bas containing from to 1 bushel in each. In the same bui. ding Mr. W. D. John bas an extensive corn and horn iny mill. Next to them Is the Flour Mi'.l of Messrs. Hoover & Ilollopcter, who are also mann'acturiag flur. Tbey are using Nordyks's Patent Percussion Flour Bolt, which, for millicg purposes, is superior to any other in use. W next L-ited tho "Uuioa Works" cf P. Uargion. This establishment is roanu fxeturim; sisr mil? aoj evaporators, two
I kinds of cider mills, portable engines, cir
cular saw mills and steam engines. Mr. Barglon is now building Woodwork's Patent PianiDg Mil!, a number of which be has orders for. Iron fencing is also made at this establishment, a sample of which may be seen at Mr A.M. Miller's new residence on North Fifth street- lie is also building a large number of sugar mills with trtble gearing, in which three revolutions are obtained, prod iciDg three times the quantity of syrup in the same amount of time and costing but a small advance. This , establishment does their work in an excellent acd workmanlike manner.' Joseph Dickinsou's Pump Manufactory, on Marion street, should not be overlooked. After visiiing Lis establishment on Monday last, we voted him a great bore, His bor:,r, mirliinrrT i ffrv COmrjletfl. and he makes purojaof all kinds and descriptions. s . , - - MaoD which is a Patent Case Pump, mud , . 3 r in use, constructed with ventilators for warm air, making the water perfectly secure from freezing in the winter season. Besides these, he keeps on band a large assortment of iron and brj ss pumps and deals in articles lor Plumber's use. Lfis trade is large acd be supplies a large extent of country besides the trade. Four hands are employed here aided by motive power. With aseven years experience in England and a twenty years residence here, be is perfect master of his business and merits patronage. In the vicinity of Gaar's establishment, we stopped for a moment into J. P. Laws's Tannery, where we found several hands at work in manufacturing sole, upper and har ness leather, made by a peculiar process originating with Mr. W. II. Study, who is connected with Mr. Laws in the manufacturing of 1- ather. From this place we had designed visiting several paper mills in the vicinity, but it being late we proposed to make a special visit to the paper and woolen mil's about Richmond for another issue and we design giving these a separate notic. Besides the manufacture of 'ea'.lier, harness, t-c, we find that carriage making is a branch of business which isextensively car ried on in Richmond. On Marion street, opposite the postoff ce, is the manufactory ,01 a" Lppincott, iisq , wuo is engaged in manufacturing light carriages and wagon- In ,,U Pale room wo found some Cne fT5"08 of workmanship in the shape ot rock.ways and light 1 wagons. On Fort Wajrne Arenu-, S. S. Stratian manu ftctures at his shop a very nice article of light wagons, and D. B. Strattan assists him in the iron work for the same. Messrs. Crocker & Co., on Main 6treet, east of the Meredith House, also manufacture light wagons and carriages, employing some 8 or 10 hands. Their work is of a supeiior style and is much sought after. Not far above Crocker' establishment is the shop of M. Parry, who also builds carriages and light wngons. There are several other shops doing carnage woik, of which wo have not inie or space at present to give a spfcial notice of. Among tho saddlery establishments of this ciiy may be found that of Messrs. S. R Wigg'ns Ji Co., on Main street. Here is manufactured a splendid article of flunks and sa Idles, and their collars and harness cannot be beat. They employ some 15 hands, C of which are engaged at their extensive tannery.
