There will be a public eiaminatLn of the various departments duriDg the last week. . Tbe public are invited to be present. Ifavae County Teacber' Ascoclatiou. This Association will hold its next sess ion, on Saturday the 9ib day of March, in the High School Room of the Public School Building. Dr. Baer. of Richmond, will address the association in the afternoon, and the various exercise) of the day will te conducted in such a manner, as to render them instructive and entertaining to all who may attend. The association is not intruded for the benefit of teachers exclusively ; its object is, to awaken an interest among fiiends of education. Subjects are discussed which are of vital importance to the parent, as well as the teacher: and all persons who may feel any interest in the cause of educa tional improvement, are respectfully invited'. f J to aueuu. Ilia well- known that our State takes a Very low Station on the scale of educational advancement, when compared with other free States of onr Union. Our schools artfewer, and poonr; our school revenue less; and general interest much inleiior to thatol any other Northern State. Why this is so is a question w do not propose to discus now; we are sorry to know that it is a fact, and are fully resolved to exert our best en deavors to erase this stigma upon our fair fame. As the world has grown old, the general diffusion of knowledge has increased and as knowledge has been more generally diffused, civilization has advanced in.the same proportion, until we have reached a period which will be styled the Iotellec'ual Age. There has been no time in the histo ry of the world when knowledge was soeagerly sought after by all classes of Society ma at present ; and there has been no time when so much civil liberty was enjoyed and consequent national prosperity, as now. Education fits a man to become a better citizen, makes him a happier man, gives him the respect and esteem of his rulers, enables him to take part in governmental affairs, causes him to guird more carefully his rights, and consequently guarantees to him more liberty, and a freer goverment. These are self evident facts, and it is also evident that our beautiful State cannot long! resist the on ward current, which is carry-1 ing along with it all of her sifters of Uncommon wealth. But this change can I on!y be produced by awakening in the mind of the people, a sense of the need of more effort, in this direction. Come out then, and throw in your mite of influence.
