-1 OLD SETTLERS
HO. XVIL However difficult and impossible tbe task to give even a brief notice of any considerable number of ber first settlers of tbe county, jet it may not be uninteresting to tbe reader to return again to our first Settler, "and bis joung wife, whom we left surrounded with their newly arrived relatives and acquaintances from Kentucky, wbo formed the first neighborhood id tbe County. Every new country has Us Boone or its Kenton, wbo is first to penetrate tbe wide forest, in ad vanca of bis countrymen, and build his log cabin in tbe bosem of the wilderness. We do not pretend to claim for our first settler, that bis life was crowded with the thrilling incidents of a Boone or a Kenton that be bung upon tbe track of the ruthless Indian for years, and circumvented him in his wilderness fastness ere be was aware of tbe white man's presence; yet, we do claim that be was a bold and determined adventurer, and that bis intrepid young wife was a suitable companion for such a pioneer. Joseph Cox, (our first settler,) was born in, Virginia, on tbe 8d day of Nov ember, 1783. Wbtn be was about ten years of age his father, John Cox, moved to Redstone Fort, now Brownsville, Pennsylvania, which was then quite a newly settled region of country, exposed to Irequent hostile incursions of the Indians, whose; tomahawks were constantly reeking withj tbe blood of the irontier settlers along the M fn,n f.nlinln mm1 1,a Hii:iii4.lianna i n n ii i , , . v' r. . . - . v . : . i . : c.t .1.. l. . ... 1 tueir irioutancB. ouoaequeimy 110 icuiured to Itoone's Station, and afterwards to llnitrhiin nnrl VV nrui Inrii onti 11 is Kpntiirkv. .... ... . . , ... He also had a, little patch of cleared land for a farm, on -which he occasionally worked with bis sons, six in number. Our first settler being the , eldest, bad to superintend the little farm. He embraced every leisure bcur to increase his little stock of learning; often selling up J, , , , 1. . t j.j 1 late of winter nights to read and t-tudy bv .. . " J . fire-light. New countries gei.eially afforded 1 but few facilities lor education, and inteilec- ( tual culture; and Kentucky was not an exception to the rule. But olten the rough ' stone, by attrition, emits as bright a spark ' as the polished steel, and the dry scales oi the shell bark hickory, and seasoned clap boards split fine has often afforded light to , many a persevering student in his pursuit of knowledge. After he haJ jtefiutred a sufficient stock ot'learning. Lu was solicited to teach a neighborhood school, w-hich he did several qu ir-' tors with success, giving general satisfaction' to both pupils and employers. Other neigh ' borhoods sought him as a school teacher; t and it was while on a school teaching excur-1 siou at New Castle, Henry County, Keii-1 tcky, that he formd an acquaintan e with Mary Rue, eldest daughter of Richard line, , Esq., proprietor of the town of New Castle, an old Indian fighter, who had been in some thirteen campaigns against the Indians, and had, when a young man, suffered a long and painful captivity among the Indians, as alluded to in a note to former chapter of these , sketches. After an acquaintance of some two years j our young couple were married at New Castie, and in a few months after their mar-1 riage, they started in tie compauy to ex- j plore the Whitewater country, and remained behind at their camp at Short ( reek, with ! llolman's two boys and Patrick O'Haria, a-' heretofore related by me. ' After the war of 1812, in which our Pio-1 neer served several 3 month tours, he st udiet I ' law with James Noble, then one of the Uni . ted States Senators from Indiana, but did ' not enter into the practice unsil about the ; year 1824; remaining on his farm below ' and adjoining Abingtou, and attending to ' his mill some mile and a half above thai' town, until the fall of 1821, when he removed to the Wabash country. He was engag ed as one of the counsel in defence of Bridge and Sawyer, tho Indian murderer at the falls of Fall Creek; but on account of the postponement of their trials until after be had settled bis family on the Waba-h. he relinquished tbe defense to his associate counsel, and was not present at their trial and conviction although his eldest son, Richard Rue Cox the jirtt whife child born in Wayne county, (now residing in Meicer county, Illinois.) was engaged by Mr. Corey, tbe sheriff of Madison county, to remain and assist in guarding tue prisoners at the Falls, until after their trial and execution. His first settlement in Western Iudiaua, was in the vicinity of Craw lords ille, the County Seat of Montgomery county, in October, 1821. Having suffered severely in his pecuniary affairs prior to leaving Wayne countv, he entered actively into the practice of the law, when the Judicial Circuit extended from Terre Haute northward to the Lakes. Attorneys, who were iew aod far between, were often sent for to go forty or fifty miles through the wilderness country, to prosecute or defend, one or more per sons charged with stealing hogs, bee hives, or other crimes and misdemeanor. Afer continuing ia the practice a few years, he ' relinquished a profession for which be nev-. er felt any very great partiality, aod applied his attention exclusively to his farm on tbe v. ii.;n ,i,;. .k ... ;n.i n .

The Abolition or Serfage In Ilusaia. Last Sunday (Jan. 13ib) was a great dy in Russia. It was New Year's day in that eountry, where the Old Style stiil continues, which occasions a difference ot twelve ilats On that day the law emancipa inK .he serfs went mio effect. To-day, it may be said, in a general sense. Slavery, or that species , ii j . r. of it which has been called serfage, exit-ts ! not in Russia. This is certainly, most i remarkatle event of the year lbGl thus far, I his important measure begran to be agitated in the Autumn of 1837. For three years it has engrossed public attention in Russia almost to the ext lusiou of everything else. Nor nd we wonder, for it is by far tbe most important step which the Government of the Empire Las taken lor several centuries. In regard lo tbe number of serfs in Russia, there seems to be great diversity of statement. In an article in the Westminister Review for October last, the number is put down at 22.0u0.00O. Some of our American papers place it at 20,000.000. The Westminster, however, only speaks of trie serls ot the nobles; it does not give, we j believe, the number of those ti at belong to i tbe Czar, or Crown, as w e should say. In 1S40 the case stood thus we give the figures derived from the books of the Ministerof the Public Domains" 26.500,00 serfs belongen to the nobles and other propriepiors; 1,600,000 belonged to the estates assigned by the En peror t members of the Imperial family, and 2o00,OOU be longed to th Crown making a loial of forty eight millions ol mm, women and children in their various classes of serfs. We ought to state, however, that the serf that belonged to theEmperor, (who were in all 21.000,000 in reality,) were rather "Crown Peasants" than ordinary "seits." They were proud of that relation, and considered themselves much better off than the rnmmnn ttAirfc- .nt e.-k 1 1 n . iua.. 7 .... . This is a warning to folks who are fond of jesting, and espt'ciully in affairs of sucli deep moment as the ceremony of marriage. White Clover. There is an advaiuage in pasturing white clover, which does not strike every farmer. Ech joint furnishes a fre.-h root (and of course a fresh plant.) whenever such joint comes in close contact with t lie Suil, consequently the more it is trodden the the thicker it will spri'ig up. Hence one reason why it grows most luxuriantly ntar the bats and gaieways of our pastures where the cattle often congregate. Cor. Boston Cultivator. JA.tlE IVI. FOE. Notary Public & Real state Agent.
