The Indiana Post, a German paper at Lafayette, and which has been heretofore neutral in politics, has declared in favor of Republicanism and hoists the names of Lincoln and Hamlin. Douglas says he is: The ablest lawyer in Illinois and the smartest stump speaker in the Union; an earnest and honest man, who believes what he professes, and who will carry out what he undertakes." tions made in a speech at New Haven, Conn., speaking of the light and wrong of slavery be said: . ". . "The other policy is one that squares with the idea that slavery is wrong, and it consists in doing everything that we ought to do if it is wrong?. Now I don't wish to be misunderstood, nor to leave a gap down to be misrepresented, even. I don't say that we ought to attack it where it exists. To me it seems that if we were to form a government anew, in view of the actual presence of slavery, we should find it necessary to frame just such a government as our lathers did, giving to the slaveholders the entire control where the system is established, while we possessed the power to restrain it from going outside those limits. (Applause.) From the necessities of the case we should be compelled to form just such a government as our blessed fathers gave us; and, surely, if they have so made it, that is another reason why we should let slavery alone where it exists. "If I siw a venomous snake crawling in the road, any man would say I might seize the nearest stick and kill it; but, ii I found that snake in bed with my children it would be another question. (Laughter.) I might hurt the children more than the snake, and the snake might bite them. (Applause.) Much more, if I found it in bed with my neighbor's children, and I had bound myself by a solemn compact not to meddle with his children under any circumstances, it would become me to let that particular mode of killing tbe gentleman alone. (Great Laugh-1 ler.j cut it mere is a oca newiy raaae up to which the children are to be taken and it was proposed to take a batch of young snakes aod put them in with them, I take it, no man would say there was a question how I ought to decide. (Prolonged ap plause and cheers.) That is just the case! The new Territories are the newly-made beds to which our children are to go, and it lies with the nation to say whether they shall have snakes mixed up with them or not. It does not seem as if there could be much hesitation what our politics shoul i be. (Applause.) Riciimontl Her .Tlanufactorles. The material growth and prosperity of every inland town and city lie in their manufactures. The truth of this is evident to all in passing from one inland city in which there are no manufactories, to one in which the busy machinery of tho mechanic and ar tisan is humming on every hand. We were struck, on our recent visit to Richmond, with the rapid growth of that city in the last few years, but on looking at her extensive manufactories in every branch of mechanism and art, giving: support to hundreds I of artisans, who in turn support the mercnant, the grocer and the busy tradesmen of a city, we did not feel surprised at the rank which Richmond takes among the first cities in the State. It is true, the commerce of the place is an important item, but if she depended on that alone, her growth would not be a tithe of what it is, nor could her prosperity be permanent, Richmond, in encouraging and building up manufacturing establishments, has struck out on the line of policy that insures her permanency and continual growth. May we not hope that a like policy will yet be adopted by Connersville, and our growth into a first class city become sure and speedy. Connersville Times. A New Drink. Parson Brownlow rt the Knoxville Whig, gives the following description of a new drink he discovered during a recent visit to Washington: They have a new drink now in Washington, called tangle-leg," the ingredients of which are diluted alcohol, nunc acid, boot leg and tobacco, and which, it is said, will upset a man at the distance of a quarter of a mile from the demijohn. We hear of people coming from all the towns and the country for seT-enty-five or a hundred miles distant. They expect to see something grand, and they will not be disappointed. Such a display of military, such attractions in the way of fire works and such an exhibition of tbe industrial interests of the country will not have been seen before in Indiana. From the Preate. The Empress Josephine was one of the mast remarkable of all tho extraordinary characters who rose into conspicuous public positions in eonaequenee of tha trench Revolution. Wonderful were tbe events of her life. W ith tho kindest and most affectionate of human hearts, she nnited the sternest principles of rectitude and a comprehensive genius. In political foresight, her superiority to Napoleon is now universally recognised. Had be listened to her admonitions, the fate of his empire might have been averted. It is worthy of notice that this political foreright and ability bss been inherited by her descendants two of whom. Napoleon 1 1 1 and Pedro 11, respectively tbe present Kiuperors of r'rance and of Bra ail, are among the ablest soveieigns bow reignirg in tho world. The events of Josephine's life, and remarkable traits of character which the displayed amidst the most amaxing vicissitudes of fortune, afford not only an exceedingly interesting but a highly instructive lesson ti all who read her biography. In this ie tpect her career, taken as a whole, may challenge comparison with that of any other historical personages in history. Josephine constantly looked to the glory of Franca and tha fame ot bar husband aa tbe two most desirable objects. VYhen Napoleon desirei to perpetuate his dynasty ly a second marriage whieh might jield him a male beir to hia throne, Josephine nobly sacrificed ber own feelings to what she was told m gbt eventuate to the advantage of r'rance. In his adversity this true woman forgot all but her happy years of wedded love remembered not that sue had been repudiated, but that he bad been ouforturisto. We hare freely drawn upon varioua authors, who have recorded anecdotes ani traits of Josephine, as related to them, with the tender regret of affection, which, too late, recognised her lull value, by A spot eon binvelf, in his closing yea, s. and it is hoped that the book will be found reliable as well as entertaining, l ull of troth, jet it is the very romance of biography.
