Protection against Lightning. TImamaem Cerppar Xs)lsir LIGHTNING ROD, WITH SPIRAL FLA3JGE&, (Patented Aug. 5. 1:36.) Frcsatr.E. T. Backman. Professor of Chemistry in the Pennsylvania Medical L'aiversity, PhUadelphia, Jan. 11, 10. Messrs. Locke It Munson Gents : In response to your inquiries yea will rind aeccmpanytcc this scene ! theoretical, views coneernicg the qualities necessary , for lightning rods You will discover that all those qualities are possessed by the Rod ot your manufacture, ani n.thing can be haiarded in saying that it is the best Koi befors the public. The cpen flange running spi- j rally the w hole length of the rod. eoabiea the fluid to traverse both surfaces and at the same time Prue TUB SPIRAL COCKSE NATT8AL TO ITS MOVEMENT; it it easily and securely erected, and tts eon. nections are f perfect that the rod is continuous. As it pussesses ahut twenty lime tbe conducting value of an iron rod. it becomes incidentally the e heap est, even atdiuble the pi ice charged: and while an iron rod soon becomes spoiled by rust, or is worthless il painted, your copper Rod retains its value an a. These and other considerations render your rod the most satisfactory that can be put up and is almost a perfect guarantee of croteetiim from the ravages of lightningYcurs Truly. E- D. fcLCKMAX. Front Dr. Bojnton, the celebrated Lecturer on Scientific subjects. H vicg examined Munson's Copper Tubular Lightning Rod with Spiral Flanges, I am free to say that it is the beat rod by far tbat 1 ever saw. Its chief points of superiority are. tbat M is copper, which is one. of the best conductors of electricity; it is tubular and thus a greater surface is obtained at smaller coat than if solid; its spiral flanges stiffen the rod. and their ROUGH RDGES DISslPAl E THE ELECTRICITY. and there-

ia is much better than if the surface was sinuoth ; iu connection is so complete that it is m effect a continuous rod. I am fully persuaJod that when it is properly erected it is a complete protection aginst the disaster, produced by lightning tnuv 9 Endorsements of the highest character have been received from John Young, late Professor of Natural Science in North Western Christian University; from Dr. H. T. Browa, late State Geologist: from Ur Jas. S. Anthon, Supprinteodent Indiana Hospital for the Insai.e. frjm Lorin Andrews, Esq . President Kenyon College; an l.indec l, over three hundred professors in colleges and other scientific men hsve recommended it as the best rod ever invented, and possessing all the elements necessary to protect buildings from lig tning. It has received the first premium at the New York State Fair, Pennsylvania State Fair, Illinois State Fir, Indiana Slate Fair, Maryland Institute held at Bali imore. Mechanic's Institute at Cincinnati ; at the Ohio State Fair ; Connecticut State lair; American Institute of .New Y'ork City; Franklin Institute of I'hiUdelphia, Pa.; and the National Fair held at Louisviilo, Ky.; and at fiity-one other County and District Fairs, held in different paits of the country. It never has been beaten in any contest, and never will be where the judges are scientifio and practical men. Over one hundred newspapers and other journals harespoVen of it in terms of highest praise, and it has been liberally patronized by the nmst intelligent people wherever introduced. This rod is made of Copper because that metal is one of tbe best conductors of electricity and does not rust, and of a TCBLLAR, SPIRAL rORM. that being the natural shape of a "thunderbolt", as demonstrated when a flash of lightning penetrates the sand. The flanges and rough edges upon the surface tend to dissipate the fluid, and thus d-wtroy its force carrying it off harmless to the earth. For sale in every city and town throughout the country.
