Boynton' Lectures t We hare not yet had the pleasure of hearing this gentleman lecture ; bat quite a number of citizens have, and several hare expressed themselves as being not only wellentertained but are quite enthusiastic in praising both menner and matter of his subject ; so much so, in fact, that we are impelled, on their recommendation, to urge those who hare not heard him, to go, and also to go oursclf and hear and see this Boynton Geological tpeci uks. Each Lecture, altho oa tha same subject, is new, and not an indivisible series ; therefore, no one need hesitate to go and hoar him on that account each one is a bright gem of itself ! The "St. Louis Daily Democrat," thus speaks of the Dr.'s success as a Lecturer : With thousands we have listened for hours, with almost breathless interest, to the geological prose poem9 of Dr. Boynton, which he announces as lectures ! lie is a master of the " art unchangable and untaught." He conducts his hearers to " the land of knowledge " through the "morning (rate of beauty." The old reptiles grow lovey, as he points them out upon that magnificent canvas. He has borne off the palm as the model scientific lecturer of the day. " His characteristics are promptness, clearness, grace, command, humor and enthusiasm. His description ol the grand geological changes and epochs are rather rapid, but powerfully graphic." Dr. B. gives four more lectures in Starr Hall to-night. Friday and Saturday night-, and Saturday afternoon. The latter is in tended exclusively for the youth girls and boys of our city, and 'tis hoped they 11 fill fcV See the Hall to us utmost citpntruj programmes. Our friend Jos. We heard that a case for violating liquor law was sustained against Hatfield of the "Cassel House about a week or ten days ago. but as he wasn't a Dutchman, the Palladium wouldn't publish it!" Ah, indeedl This is news to us, who have always endeavored to treat every active agent of the devil engaged in liquor-selling impartially, without regard to the country that would be disgraced by being his birth-place. We'll inquire in to the case; m the mean time, we also hear that th old proprietor, Sam. Cassel, is about to supercede Mr. H. as landlord in a short time Upwards of 260 members now belong to old Clark DivUiou Sous of Temperance. Members have constantly been added very meeting at an average of about S per meet in sr. since the Order was recussitated about eight months ago. The case again comes up next term of Court. ...Our friend Abe Phillips, has added to the beauty of his Hearse by placing plumes upon the top thereof Black ones, for adults, and White ones for children.. . .The Firemen of our City, with their "masheens," tnrned out pretty generally yesterday to celebrate the birthday of the Father of his country, and they presented a fine appearance in procession. The streets were rather muddy from the previous night's rain, yet whoever heard of a fireman fearing mud? Well, they did up the marching thro' the mud, enlivened by music from Mitchell's Cornet Band, well calculated to draw booy, leers and feet up and
out of the mire and the clay, in double-quick time it founded to us like us if we'd as lief enjoy a wade after such soul-cheering and stirring music as not! At the corner of Sixth and Walnut-sts., the trial of throwing water took place. The wind blew too strong foi a count of solid feet scattering the spray in every direction ; yet there was good work sufficiently and scientifically performed, to cause every citizen to be proud of the Richmond Fire Department Two things were well-done on yesterday (22d) the nomination of Lane and Morton at Indianapolis, and the Firemen's Celebration at Richmond; whilst the former are putting out the fires of disunion, anarchy, extravagance, and misrule. kindled by locofoco State and National ad ministrations, the latter stand ready to put out fires kindled by accident or design. Hurrah, then, for Lane and Morton ! and hurrah for our Fire Companies!.. ..Some of Indiana's partners in the drunkard-making business, according to law, feeling somewhat indignant that they could not do as they pleased with their State Stock, in conse quence of the testimony ot a minor, which drained their pockets of the profits derived from its sale ; scared tho boy so badly by threatening to whip him, that he has left the city Notwithstanding our neighbor is somewhat incredulous in regard to the rumor about a change in the Postoffice, if his 'outgoings and incomings' are not strictly to the pleasement of Marshal Robinson, he seems determined to spoil the "fun" we may have had in prospect, by endeavoring to convince C.J.Woods and other Douglas democrats, that their idea that "no human power can get up a Convention in this District, or any county in it, that would not bo overwhelmingly for Douglas," IS ABSURD ! " This will please John L. our neighbor is yet secure, and we are "disappointed" in anticipating any fun because of friend Elder's subserviency to the commands of his master. ....Mr. W. II. Beaty, of Hamilton, O.. had his pocket-book stolen on Monday last at the depot. The book contained 3102 and a number of Notes.... Our neighbor has nothing to say this week ic regard to the question he propounded to Repnblican Clubs, about meddling with slavery where it exists." Is he afraid to say any thing more on that subject? ... .Sam. But we will see ; as I bare had a little leisure ol late. hare called oa nearly all whom he mentions, and will report success. He first refers to the books and bookkeeper of St rat Un & Son. And as this is the only bu siness house in our City where 1 have hear J a word spo ken in farorof the Spencenan. as a hand for business, 1 will delineate. When I called upon them, tha book keeper, who was Hulcombe's pupil and best writer, would only show ma the ledger, with the pitiable plea that it was the only book he kept. Of course always posted with care, and filled with figures and brief ref erences, and not a line of writing in it. A great test surely of hpenccrian penmtnship. tie next refers with mujli aesarauee to our Printing ofSoes. Editors ef both ; Palladium and Broadaxe hare decided that for their bu- : sines they would, all the time prefer engular style, as they hare no time for round wurk ; and some of them tt.ting that tbey would not write it it' they eould. But all said it was very beautiful to look at, as an ornamental hnJ. At Bridgland's I found as nest and complete a set of books as I hare seen East or West. They are such ss would do credit to any City. And all kept in a complete and beautiful antrular hand ; as I was politely shown through eight or ten different : nooks. let thy mend Mofcombe claims tnern. too as I Speneerian writers 1 Mauzey remarked that he eonld inform him that in doing the amount of business they ' did, they had t take the shortest cut for it. Newburn , keeps the regular book, and though formeily a Spencerian teacher, thou will find his work in a rery plain I neat aagutar form, just such as I wout 1 wish to gire it , myself. I would advise thee by all means to visit j them, and if thou wishes to seo a contrast, take with 'thee one of Sponoer'a Copy Books. I took .No. 5. ' Young MoWhinnj, though Holcombe's pupil, decided that for rapid business he would prefer my tle. He . next claims the Railroad office. The Dennises were aum.'el at the idea of writing such a hsnd in rapid buinea, and considered it i:iipus-ible for any one to 'do it without running mure or l-s into the angular , form. MeMeios of Spring Foundry is also claimed, t who laughed at the idea, saying he had nerer taken lessons in any system, and knew nothing about Spencerian. He keeps a beautiful set of books, in a small, neat running hand, showing a mixture of round and angular, which he writes very rapidly. E. Bellis, of Coffin's store, also states that he knows nothing of 'he Spencerian, and learned the old round hand when a schoolboy, which he still partially adheres to. Coffin himself writes a smooth, angular hand. ' Thou art also referred to Starr & White. And thy friend Holcombe seems rery certain that 'they employ their gas for the better purpose than puffing peaked hand.' By his leaving the country without settling his bill there, he must have 'apprehended' that they furnished itfreegrati: But friend White keeps a neat set of books, yet no Spencerian, and dooided without hesitation that he would prefer my style for a bu ; siness hand to that of Spenoer's. v Thy friend also calls upon Ksq. Poo to aid him in denouncing my system. The Esqr. has since stated before one of my classes of 47 pupils, that 'if he were young and wished to qualify himself tor ripid business writing, he would undoubtedly choose the angular hand; because it was so much more easily acquired, and that Spencer himself would certainly admit that it could be more speedily written. But added that if he had two or three years to learn in. and wanted to aoquire a style just for beauty, for show, he would ' take the old round hand that was taught abundantly ' beiore Spencer existed.' He considered that tbe most beautiful of any other, and had long written it. But , when hurried says he finds himself running into the j angular hand. And last, but not least, thou art refer- , red to our Court Record at Ccnterrille. kept by W. H. Sch later, and pronounces it Spenoerian with extreme emphasis, 'possessing alt the characteristic eurves to ' perfection.' This is cer ainly the most iaaaae plunge of ail. As every one acquainted with Schluter's writing knows it to be a rery acute angular hand : extremely rapid, bold and uniform As a speedy, uniform, business writer, he has lew superiors or equals. Hotoombe speaks of our comuiercial cities, where the tngular hand is not known lie formats the celebrated i'rof. Rnis, and is not aware that I baverisited nearly every State east of the Allghanies, started out teachers from rarion points, and have now on hand a fine lot of specimens executed by citixensof Philadelphia, and other prominent places But in all my travels there, I ' never once heard the Spencerian system spoken of. i Throughout the Mississippi valley, teachers from under my instruction are scattered broad cast. And Indiana alone can boast of forty or fifty professors of ' penmanship, who are now busi!y engaged in the good ' work. Tby friend acknowledges my enceess over ( Spencerian teachers in eeeuriog patronage, but sars 'if they were to descend to the same level, resort to the j asme means, Ac, tbey too oould succeed.' To meet t this low and very ungentlemanly insinuation, I must here insert an item, viz : After once or twice introducI in the subject on the street, Holcombe called at my ' residence, and made a direct proposition for me to re- ' eeire him into partnership in teaching. Not being " ahle to see my advantage in. so doing, I of course deolined. He finally asserted in the presence of witnesses, that he 'woulii giv f-VM if ha coidd sucoretf o did h procHriny clasttl' The earnest and emphatic ' manner in which he made this statement, so impressed those present, that tbey hare oten spoken of it since. Hut this was rather a high price to offer we think, for posessing a faculty which he now thinks so low and groreling. It is unfortunate for him to apeak of my system being a Kmoif' where it is so well known. Those kind of seldom flourish longer than he did in our city. And one of oar most prominent business men, after reading hie letter, remarked to me. en the street, that 'Holoombe was the greatest humbug tha: ever visited Richmond It is an interesting fact that of all tbe Spencerian , teachers tha hare at various times taught in oar city i not one, I believe ha dared pay us a second visit ! While I have ncorded the names ot nearly three thou ( sand citizen who have year after year filled my school room, for the last eloven years. And did they not consider the source, thy friend's low insinuation I would be quite a compliment to their intelligence: that i they had been so long patronizing a humbug, and not ible to make the discovery until he, in ail his wisdom risos up away in Missouri, and makes the terrible anaouaccment, while at the aime time, citizens who attended my classes ten and elovon years ego, are now sending to me their children. No, friend Hiram, my long and wH-known success oan only be attributed to i Ktraight forward eourse, and that of teaching a hand .hat swits As tcantt of t people. Anytbingaside from this, with an intelligent community, must dwindle and die. E. P. BALDWIN. Whits Waxes P. O., Wayne County, Ind., February 15, 1360. On Friday night about 8 o'clock, whilst one of our lady ciuzens was passing along Main et., she was grossly insnlted. She ran home and sent for Mr. Baily, of the police department, who gave pursuit to the scamps, there being two of them, but was unable to find them. It is a bad state of affairs when our ladies cannot pass along the most public street, at an early hour in the evening without being insulted by the scoundrels who may bo prowling around. An attempt was made probably Thursday night, to set fire to a vacant building at the junction of Front and Marion-st. The incendiaries collected some straw in the cellar, and placed it between the ceiling and the floor, which ignited the floor burning a hole large enough to insert the hand in it then went out. The owner whilst showing tbe house to one who wanted to rent it, discovered these incendiary signs on Friday eve. On Wednesday morn, about 2 o'clock, an attempt was made to enter the store of 'J. M. Laws, on Main-st. through the Front way. The window-fastenings had been neglected, and the burglars being aware of this fact made the bold attempt to enter tbe front of the building. The night bting dark, favored their plan, and had it not been for the night-watch, they would have succeeded. Mr. Bailey and one of his aids, came upon the scamps, and made the attempt to capture them, but owing to the fact that the burglars had taken the precaution to extinguish tha gas lamps towards the depot, they made a safe retrtat. So close was the pursuit, that they dropped the iron bar they had been using, about one square from the store, which was picked up by Mr. B. Poiick Chajtok. Philander Bonner, has resigned his position as watchman under Mr. Bailey, who appointed Gotleib Lichtenfeltz in his stead. W. II. Harris, also resigned, and Terance Dunn, was appointed in hist place. The newly appointed watchmen were sworn in by the Mayor. Death Rksdlti.no from Being Bittes. bt a Rat. Horace Y. Smith, a young son of Mr. Sidney Smith, of this city, was bitten by a iat through the fleshy part of the hand, in June last. Soon after, he exhibited symptoms similar to those shown by persons suffering from hydrophobia, and at intervals ever since has been afflicted with convulsions increasing in violence, and terminating in death on Wednesday morning last. His age was about four years. 4?James M. Hays is now selling his stock of goods at very low prices, for the purpose of preparing for a large stock of spring and summer goods.
